I think I'll go by genre.
FPS- Half Life
RTS- C&C
RPG- Morrowind
JRPG- FF VIII
Fighting- Street Fighter 2
Action Adventure- Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Stealth Action- Splinter Cell

Those are all I can think of at the moment.
Splinter Cell? What about Metal Gear?
well the only real game you need for stealth would be Wolfenstein 3D it was more than just a FPS
Not really correct the first game to use stealth was Castle Wolfenstein. But I guess Metal Gear is more iconic in that genre than Castle Wolfenstein.

Hmm...I'm trying to think of it. Thief would also be a influential candidate, at least in terms of first person stealth.

Well that's just my opinion but I prefer Splinter Cell because it is just more fun for me to play.
I agree as far as fun, but the metal gear franchise has had mountains of effect, it should definitely go up there.

From what I've seen so far, I'd agree w/ you on the "important game" thing.

For RTS I would like to suggest Dune 2. It was the first successfull RTS made. Then maybe C&C series or Warcraft for defining the genre.

Grrr.....Thief goddamn ye! Come on! Yahtzee even did a review on it!
True Thief is also a good candidate. But when talking about the most influential you must add cultural impact and the game relevance to the genre. In wich Metal Gear takes the gold.

I'm not denying that Metal Gear is influential I'm just saying the Splinter Cell was better.
And I was agreeing, but the topic isn't about best games, it's about the most influential.

I want to say Dungeon Keeper...but then barely anyone remembers it, much less any games that have drawn from it significantly, so I guess Black & White would be a better choice with regards to influential God sims.

As for MMOs...I'd be remiss if I didn't put World of Warcraft. Regardless of whatever people think of it, it is a massively influential game for good or bad. But, even above that I'd put Ultima Online for showing us that massively multiplayer games could work well and be successful.

I would suggest Devil May Cry, as it was the first action game (if I remember correctly) where style and substance went hand-in-hand in fantastic harmony. Certainly its sequels don't live up to the original, but the original itself has classic (and influential) gameplay.

In my opinion both Metal Gear and Splinter Cell fail :p I prefer Thief or Tenchu but as we are talking about most influential the prize goes for the game made in 1987 for the NES named Metal Gear. Metal Gear was the first popular stealth based game. After that games like Thief, Tenchu, Hitman and Splinter Cell perfected the genre by adding new stuff to it.

I always viewed Devil May Cry as a 3d Golden Axe. So I guess its a toss betewen Golden Axe and DMC1.

Maybe DMC1!

That's something odd about -both- the Metal Gear Solid series and Splinter Cell. Those are only two franchises. There really aren't that many pure stealth games outside those two series(Well not any modern ones anyway). I guess at a stretch Assassin's Creed is also a kind of offspring of these.

But besides that, are there any other games that have been influenced by them? Or are they just influential by virtue of being well known and popular stealth titles?

Metal Gear Solid series is based in the 2d Metal Gear series. Metal Gear inspired games like Thief, Tenchu, Hitman, Splinter Cell.

Hmm....I remember Tenchu...isn't that a little different though? You jump around a lot in it and make with the fancy swordplay and smokebombs, I found it more than similar to some of the later Ninja Gaidens than anything else. Though the stealth aspects there were pretty nice. Unlike Ninja Gaiden where the objective seems to be as unlike a ninja as you possibly can. xD

And yes! I forgot about Hitman! Thanks :3

Tenchu if not wrong was one of the first stealth 3D games. You played as a ninja and it was very based in stealth. Waiting for the patrol to pass in the dark, use bombs to distract enemies, try not to fall into the enemy traps, using decoys/traps. You couldnt enter in open combat cause your characters would die right away so you needed to kill people one by one in a sneaky way.

Ninja Gaiden ninja is a Naruto ninja without the giant frogs but louder.

super mario 64 for having a good camera (for its time) in a full 3d world

Ocarina of Time for showing just how action games can truely be done in 3d

metroid (original) for its exploration and the fact that the world you were in was connected.

whatever game started the whole music rythm genre in gaming.

golden eye for showing how to make a good fps on the consles

If you don't mind my asking, why?
Well Metal Gear may have been one of the starters but Splinter Cell was one of the first stealth games that made it to the global tournament level and I believe that is a greater accomplishment than MGS.
I can see what you mean. At the same time, however, there probably wouldn't even be a Splinter Cell without MGS. Honestly, I can't believe I'm arguing this, as Splinter Cell (minus Double Agent) is one of my favorite series of all time.
