What do you think is one of the gaming engines that revolutionized games as a whole?

I find that the Unreal Engine is one, consistently cranking out top range graphics and performance.

The Source Engine is definitely influential, given the massive popularity of the Half Life Series, as well as the ease of moddability.

I'd also mention Warscape. The engine that Empire Total War and Napoleon Total War runs on. Unfortunately, neither of these games are living up to the engine's potential. It has the capacity to run battles with tens of thousands of highly detailed units, but it is being squandered.

So, what gaming engines do you think revolutionized games?

Infinity Engine. The best game ever was made in it, as well as several of the best RPGs of all time.

Havok. Because EVERYONE wants to use Havok nowadays. To name a few...

Just Cause 2, Bioshock (Series), Fallout 3, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Half Life 2 (Series), HAZE, Farcry 2, Mercenaries 2, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, Assassin's Creed (Series)...

Calumon: Ummm, he's gonna be a while. He doesn't stop once you get him like this unless I get him some milk.

Unreal engine? I don't know if this counts though, since there are so many variations of it; from Unreal to Mass Effect 2

I thought Havok was just a physics engine used in conjunction with the game engine. But hey if it counts, then I'm throwing in Euphoria for the novelty.

For god's sake Calumon, hurry!

Also, as I understand it, Havok is mostly just the bare-bottom of it, most people build their own on top of it. I believe that's what Valve did with Half-Life.

I'm going to vote Unreal. It seems like everything uses that these days.

I'd say a mix of Havok and Source right now. Havok for its game list, and Source for all of its modding potential bringing new ideas to light.

Unreal and what not for older games.
Older games? Ever heard of UE3?

OT: SCUMM, Quake, possibly CryEngine as well with all that advancement in real-time graphics and whatnot.

Well... technically, it's a physics engine, that is designed to be used in conjunction with a "proper" game engine, seeing as a game engine needs to include things such as AI, scripting, rendering, input/output, audio etc. etc. Havok does naught of that.
