I was going to name names like Mindless Self Indulgence (the older stuff anyway), Frank Zappa or System of a Down when I realized there's Van Canto;

Oh the other hand, you can say what you want about them but they DO have talent.

I'm gonna have to say Pirate / Viking metal is pretty obscure. Well, people I know think I'm weird for listening to it.
That is the single greatest type of music in the world.

You wanna talk obscure? Try "Jon & Vangelis"

The Friends of Mr Cairo...love that song.

My favorite band ever, the almighty Clutch, is semi-obscure, but not too bad.

Some other kind-of obscure bands I like are Scissorfight, Five-Horse Johnson, 60-Watt Shaman, Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, High on Fire, Fu Manchu. Not too obscure (more just regional in Scissorfight's case), but not really popular and well-known either.

Tunak Tunak Tun - Daler Mehndi

My friend used this for some belly-dancing thing she did. I haven't seen it myself, but she assures me the music video is worth watching.
- Ironically, Tunak Tunak Tun came to my awareness by a like-named song by the industrial spoof band Kompressor.
actually i do believe they came to fame as an internet meme and then as the dance for the male Draenei

also Kompressor is a bit obscure, sadly i can't find their album, i'd love to have a copy

Also, pseudo Opera singing doesn't mix with Metal. So quit it, Nightwish!
That makes you sound like a music snob of mega proportions.
Maybe, but I never thought and still don't think that Nightwish is a good band. Neither live nor on CDs.

By most normal people's standards, everything I listen to is highly obscure.

The most obscure thing I listen to regularly is probably Rat King - The Plague of Hamelin, some kind of weird experimental metal band from India.

I review indie and local acts for a local rag. The local bands can be pretty obscure (obviously), but I'll refrain from counting those and only list some national acts most people aren't aware of. If you are, congratulations. You get a cookie.

Antony & the Johnsons
The Be Good Tanyas
Calexico
Cold War Kids
Irving
The Last Shadow Puppets
Midlake
Minus the Bear
Old Crow Medicine Show
Red House Painters
Rubyhorse
Sprung Monkey
The Weeks
What Made Milwaukee Famous
Yeasayer

Nina Hagen was an Opera singer before turning to metal and she did pretty well

I think the most weird music I've ever heard is by a very strange band called Behold...the Arctopus. I don't actually like them, but you did ask for obscure and there you are. A band that I actually like that I've never known anyone else to know is Our Lady Peace. Good band.

I listened to a band called Stalagh. They have some pretty bizarre music with screams said to have been recorded in an asylum.
Another poor guy who's had their ears haunted by this stuff, it really is the nastiest thing out there.

They're by far the strangest thing I've ever heard but they're not quite as obscure as Frank Castle Gonna Break Your Neck.
