Most Overrated Movie and Why

Whenever people use the words overrated and underrated they seem to assume that their opinion is somehow superior to everyone elses.

Anyway, for me it's Mad Max. Maybe it get's good towards the end. I wouldn't know as I fell asleep after about 30 minutes. As for the first 30 minutes I have no idea what happened. Seemed like it was mostly stock footage of driving on the worlds most boring highway.

12 Monkeys is another one I don't particularly like. I liked the characters and the acting a lot, but I really don't get why that twist at the end was supposed to be so great. A good twist to me is something like Sixth Sense or Fight Club where you think "Wow! I didn't see that coming, but that explains everything!" not just throwing away the entire plot and throwing in some random dude that's never explained you've never seen before to finish the plot.

As much as Avatar and Twilight give me a headache, I can't really say they are the MOST overrated movies. Outside of forum threads about bad movies, people don't even really talk about Avatar anymore; It's already been forgotten, and I'm fairly confident Twilight will share that fate, once they've milked the books dry.

So I'll agree with whoever said Godfather.

Scott Pilgram Vs. The World; It felt like every other generic chick flick to me, just aimed at a slightly nerdier audience.

Inception; not very original, terrible acting, and it was predictable.

Donny Darko; again not that entertaining and uninteresting.

Also, Avatar... it needs no explanation

Inglorious Basterds. Tarantino has made nothing so far to show me he's as good as people say. The main thing I disliked about the movie was that it was advertised as a comedy and everyone said it was hilarious, and it was not funny at all. That and I don't like watching characters talk in languages I don't understand about a plot I stopped caring about 10 minutes in, all while reading subtitles.

Yay you said it for me! Thank you good sir! Though I admit, I DID like the Kill Bill movies, at first anyway.

Transformers - the first one. Everyone rags on part 2 and a lot of people are split over the 3rd but many of those same seem to think the first one was fun and exciting. It was kind of boring. None of the action was compelling (this was meant to be an action film) and it felt too much like it was written with kids in mind. Writing a film for kids is fine but the people I am talking about haven't been teenagers for years and should be embarrassed for raving on about it.

Seriously are people just into banal, contrived and dull movies because of some undeserved nostalgia or is the massive marketing machine enough to convince them that this is the finest entertainment they will encounter?


The Sixth Sense and the Crying Game - both got a lot of buzz at the time due to their respective plot twists. The problem was each of the movies were very average. The sixth sense was a dull film marketing as a supernaturual thriller and the Crying game the same (but a sort of spy thriller instead). With neither film was the twist predictable, thats not my complaint, my complaint was that I had to wade through very boring movies to get to the twist which wasn't so amazing that it made the earlier stuff worth while.

Citizen Kane. Excellent movie, highly influential, but not the best movie ever made by far, as AFI claims.

Highlander and Blade Runner. Saw them both recently. Was bored by both. Yet somehow they both have cult followings.

Just about anything by Stanley Kubrick. I have not seen A Clockwork Orange, but everyone I know who has, has told me never to watch it. 2001, while having interesting parts and the only really realistic space travel, is too long, boring, and pretentious. It also doesn't make sense, like the book. Full Metal Jacket is only good in the parts where R. Lee Ermey is chewing the recruits out. The only exception I will grant that man was Dr. Strangelove, which is actually fairly funny.

My wife says Scott Pilgrim was overrated, and I think I might agree. My wife hated it; I thought it was enjoyable, but average, but it was not some great piece of geek cinema, or if it was, that means geek cinema sucks.

The reason for me was that I watched The Andromeda Strain right before it. Which was a MUCH better The world is ending suspenseful disaster movie.

I am not sure what you mean here as 12 Monkeys wasn't really a "plot twist" film and the plot wasn't discarded at the end. Also what random dude are you talking about? The film was about how the events of the past are unchangable. Unlike the Sixth Sense which is a film about "look at my plot twist". Even Fight Club didn't hinge on its twist as the humour and veiwpoints expressed by the characters were the primary focus. So I don't agree with your comparison as I found 12 Monkeys to be a good example of a tightly plotted film.

I would have enjoyed it more if my parents hadn't gotten me all worked up about how awesome it was. That made me expect more than it had.

Also, I've seen Spaceballs; it was quite entertaining. This is coming from a guy who never watched any Star Wars movie. Take note.

I agree with you on this one. Once set things aside and stuck the lot on one after the other and honestly was not that impressed with the first Mad Max film. Its not all that good, its apparently only around 90 minutes long but if feels like it goes on forever, its not all that great, its boring, takes forever to get anywhere and the climax at the end isn't really that big of a pay off.

The second film I honestly enjoyed quite a lot though and is the one that is referenced the most or as influenced the most.
