For me it is Inception. It was in no way bad but I did not think it was anything special. It may have been over hyped.A few of my friends we telling me for about two weeks before I saw it that it was the second coming in movie form.

Avatar. It was a good movie with great cinematic moments but the story was unoriginal. A friend of mine said they ripped it off Pocahontas, which I sorta agree with because I say it is ripped from the British colonies bullying the Native Americans in real life.

Also, Watchmen.

The Godfather is a pretty darn overrated film. Isn't it, like, the most highly rated movie on RottenTomatoes? Yeah, greatest film ever? I don't think so.

And Citizen Kane? Come on. I like a lot of old movies, too. My parents raised me on AMC marathons. They showed me more hours of Bringing Up Baby than most MMO addicts get in World of Warcraft. And Citizen Kane is not the film of films.

And yes, Katharine Hepburn is a media figure I looked up to as a child. I was not much of a Hollywood person, but I did like her. A lot.

Honestly, I think I am destroyed in some way as I honestly feel like most overrated movies are overrated for a reason. Usually, any movie that is hyped up into oblivion I really love.

I guess one movie I really did not get the hype was Captain America, although I was entertained and I could see the appeal. I just felt it was really cliched and full of stupid decisions by Captain America (Running into enemy encampment alone and so on) I know it's supposed to be like that but I just ended up shaking my head.

Also, Star Wars IV - VI were pretty cool, but nothing more than that. I feel like I'm one of the few nerds in the world who would not enjoy watching any of the old Star Wars movies again.

Godfather II, all the way.

It ripped to shreds everything I liked about the previous film and its characters, and was excruciatingly long and dull. For some reason it's treated as the holy fucking grail of sequels, but I couldn't stand it - especially watching the two immediately back to back.

doesnt overrated really mean "popular movie I don;t like?" its kind of hard to apply that phrase fairly

hmmm then again

AVATAR does not deserve to be praised for being original...the only thing it deserves praise for is being annoying white-guilty

Said to be one of the 'perfect films', pffft. I really enjoyed it and even bought it on DVD, but perfect? Fuck off.

Possibly the most innovative film ever, but there are so so many more interesting and entertaining films out there. It's good to see people appreciate innovation and clever story lines though.

Avatar is still the worst I had to put up with. Advertisements every where telling me it's the GREATEST MOVIE EVER!!! Even most of my family bought into that bull shit.

I went to see it with my cousins and thought it was fun, but after they were saying shit like "it's got to be one of the best, did you see the detail?". I rolled my eyes so many times at all the things they said, they nearly fell out of my skull.

Most overrated, I don't know, but I always found The Shawshank Redemption pretty fucking hammy for an apparent timeless masterpiece.

I think it may be a bit early to admit this but...The Nolan Batman movies. Dark Knight was great and I wouldn't deny that but the movies seem so grounded in reality that it just seems weird to add in Batman. Hell, if Begins were to omit Batman and just be about warring Mob families and corrupt cops I'd watch it. Dark Knight was good too and I did like it but I still feel it was over-rated.

Mad Max & Mad Max 2: Road Warrior. They were both boring as shit, nothing happens in the second film until the last 15 minutes.

I can't take Lord Humongous seriously, he wears a metal gimp mask for Christ sake. I've spoilered a picture because it borders on NSFW and for neatness.

Avatar. It's unoriginal with a preachy environmentalist message. I'd rather watch District 9 any day - yes, it has it's own message, but at least that one has stuff blowing up...

This. I went into it with pretty high expectations considering so many people consider it the greatest movie of all time, and got a fairly racist, ham-fisted Christ allegory with really simplistic morality.

I'd say the Avengers, but it really needs some time for the dust to settle in order to get a true assessment of how people really feel about it.

For me, it was a fun movie, but it wasn't really a smart movie. Whedon has trouble with dialogue if his characters aren't being snarky, and even some of snark just seemed like they were reaching ("If we can't save the earth, you sure as hell better believe we'll avenge it...if you know, we're not dead, which is presumably why it would be destroyed"). Marvel films all seem to have pacing issues, with all the exposition feeling rushed just so they can get back to the action.

That's not to say I don't look down on fun movies, but it's just so much more difficult to balance between good drama and exciting action that I always rank those movies above just the popcorn fun stuff.

Recently, The Avengers, good but not great and way too much praise has been given to it. Of all time though it has to be Blade Runner, excellent score and amazing special effects but the story sucks.

2001: A Space Odyssey. The whole thing with HAL was pretty interesting, and well done, but it took forever to get there, and when its over, there's another half hour-45 minutes of Stanley Kubrick messing around with the color filters, then a few shots that don't make sense and are never explained. A classic example of people not wanting to admit they can't understand something that's clearly supposed to be "deep" and "meaningful".

And yes, I've read the explanation of what the last bit means, and I still don't like it, understand it, or care to watch it again.

I ain't intending to be a fanboy, although I love Shawshank. I'm just completely confused about what you're posting; Nothing of what you describe sounds to me like The Shawshank Redemption. It's, as the name implies, a redemption tale. I don't see any Christ allusions, nor any blatant racism. It may reflect the time period it portrays, yes, and that may include certain characters being racist, but who exactly is being stereotyped? Red(Morgan Freeman)? I don't see it.

I wouldn't call Shawshank a perfect film; I don't think you can make a perfect film; it can't appeal to everyone. Still, I find it a powerful movie. Hammy at times, sure, but a lot of classic movies, as they age, become hammy. I don't think that disqualifies it from being a good movie. It's all taste, of course, and I can't fault anyone for not liking it. It's dull at times, and feels longer that it probably is, but I suppose it all comes down to your preferences. I'd take Shawshank over Predator any day of the week. Actually, chalk that one up as my "overrated film" for the topic. Predator. Not that it's bad, it just fails to engage me at all. Not even Arnold can save it for me, which is sad. I love Arnold. ):

I'd have to go with Pulp Fiction. It's not a bad movie but in my opinion, it doesn't deserve the Tarantino wank-fest treatment people are always giving it. Frankly, I preferred Reservoir Dogs.
