I agree with all of those, except Gladiator.
Dark Knight was a decent movie, and honestly it only got so much praise because it was Heaths last known film at the time (His last film is The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) Dont get me wrong I think Heath is an amazing actor, bt the Dark Knight was average.
I only liked Magnolia for the opening brain bender of is it Murder or Suidice?
To add to the list Transformers.
I'm the opposite: I think those movies were great except for Gladiator, which was merely good.

Transformers was huge box office, but I think the critics got it right calling it meh to rotten. Money isn't the same as over-rated. I do agree with you that I shudder to think what is happening to our culture when I see something like this dross making a gazzillion bucks world wide. We're doomed.

My nominee is Moonstruck. It wasn't bad, but, it wasn't the second coming the critics seemed to think it was.

True, by now, everyone knows everything about the original Psycho. But, when you think about when it came out, it must have been blowing peoples' minds.

This (Napoleon Dynamite) was a love it or hate it flick. You either got it or you didn't. I lent it to friends that returned it and gave me a, "are you a moron?" look, and others that still quote it to this day. Me and my family have watched it about 100 times.

Titanic -- two thirds soap opera, wishing they'd shut up. Sunk pretty, though.

Gone With the Wind -- Saw the theatrical re-release back 'round the turn of the millennium. My take? "Frankly, my dear..."

Gotta disagree with you "Citizen Kane" haters out there. Lots of memorable clever quips, moving story, media intrigue in real life, and good camera tricks. CGI? We don't need no stinkin' CGI!

Yes, something can be highly rated without being enjoyable... but I love Citizen Kane.

You want wicked highly rated, and, I can appreciate why, but you will be bored out of your ever loving mind? Something that makes 2001 look like this Summer's G.I. Joe?

Check out the classic, very highly rated, "The Bicycle Thief". You'll hate me for mentioning it if you do. Cinema Verte: meant to be very life like. Guess what... life is largly slowly paced and I don't want to just sit there watching someone do it.

Anything by Alfred Hitchcock.

His movies might have been revolutionary because they were the first to use techniques which are now staples of modern cinema, but by now, all of his techniques have been used over so many times that his work is thoroughly obsolete. I haven't been really entertained by any of his movies, and I can't see why Citizen Kane stays fresh while Psycho, Rear Window, and the Birds all just now seem stale.

EDIT: If I were a less sane man, I would be tracking down the locations of where almost everyone in this thread lives. Citizen Kane, Gladiator, The Dark Knight, and The Departed, all bad movies? Philistines...

Dark Knight.

God damn that was a crappy film.

Everything ever made by Michael Bay - the fact those films have not been sealed in concrete containers and dropped into nuclear disposal pits means that someone is rating them more highly than they should.

This may have been said before, but if a movie is hyped up alot, you naturally tend to expect said movie to be awesome and nothing less (well maybe 'great').
With that being said alot of the movies mentioned so far I haven't liked, such as Australia, Transformers 2 and Titanic.
I've been caught in the hyped movie trap though, with The Simpsons Movie.
But The Simpsons tv series hasn't been good for quite a while though so it was my own fault for expecting too much.

I'm limiting myself to films that are more than fangirl/fanboy-hyped movies (because everyone knows movies "Twilight" is not worthy of anything beyond fangirl hype). I am also ignoring stupid "guy" humored movies by folks like Will Ferrill and Seth Rogan. Seriously, I'm going to name overrated FILMS, not MOVIES.

Kill Bill (1 & 2) (Actually...75% of Tarantino's movies, he was a video store clerk for a a REASON, folks.)

Slumdog Millionaire (Just bloody boring.)

The Shining (Sorry, I get the whole "oooh, it's scary that daddy went crazy in the middle of nowhere!" bit, but it still isn't scarier than The Exorcist or Texas Chainsaw Massacre.)

Forrest Gump (See: Slumdog Millionaire)

And I agree with Citizen Kane. Just garbage.

I disagree with you there, that movie is terrifying. Well, that maybe just me. It's scary because my dad looks exactly like Jack Nicholson in that movie when he is angry.

I can't believe The Godfather was listed. I mean...come on. Just, come on. It's the freaking Godfather. It helped define the mob movie as we know it. And the historical accuracy of it, the characterization...it's a masterpiece. That's like saying Citizen Kane is meh.

The biggest overrated movie I've seen in a while was Transsiberian, which was hyped as the best thriller since Strangers on a Train and was in reality a snoozefest that had to hand the Idiot Ball to each character in turn just to justify all the contrived plot "twists."

You know someone is going to say that The Godfather or Citizen Kane are overrated/garbage/crap/boring/pointless in these type of threads. Theres at least 2-3 people that have already said that in this one.

Anyway...I'm going with the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels...The first one was such a "great" movie. It was a fun adventure, it had funny dialog and situations but it never really got "stupid" and really enjoyable.
The sequels pick everything that made the first one good and ruin it by making it extremely vague and over the top.(Worst offender: Jack Sparrow) And now they making a fourth....

I'm only mentioning the ones people haven't brought up yet.

Original Star Wars trilogy - Nowhere as great as most people seem to imply.
Donnie Brasco - Only seen it once, but I didn't think much of it.
Goodfellas - Two of the most annoying actors of our time, in a movie that doesn't have a plot.
2001: A Space Odyssey - Fucking murder me.
Hahaha you are far too nice. 2001: A Space Odyssey isn't a film. Its a special effects slideshow. Films have stories and characters.

Edit: Ah crap. Didn't realise this thread was so old. Sorry.

Replies:

- The Matrix sequels were overrated and generally don't stand the test of time, but the original Matrix was a solid piece of pop philosophy sci fi action and really resonated with the culture of it's time.

- The Dark Knight was an excellently conceived movie, but I think everyone kinda looks at it with ruby glasses on account of Ledger, I'd agree. I don't think it would have been a poor movie, lacking him, but he really stole the show. I think if it wasn't for his standout performance, the Dark Knight would be received in a manner more akin to Batman Begins or DKR - top shelf, but not a classic.

-----

My own:

- Donnie Darko. It really struck me as the sort of movie people loved to call edgy and strange, without really being familiar with the breadth of what's out there in fringe cinema. I didn't feel it did anything that I hadn't seen done better in movies I felt more deserving and on some level had a disdain for felt like a vibe of "approachable edginess", which to my mind, is not edgy. Around when it came out, a lot of friends and acquaintances wouldn't shut up about it being the bee's knees and so deep and how the rabbit was the creepiest thing ever. Once you've seen some Cronenberg, Lynch, Miike, Waters, Tsukamoto, Gilliam or Jodorowsky, then maybe your words will carry some more weight for me. This probably makes me sound like an elitist prick, but it can't be helped. It was a GOOD movie, mind.

- Crash, the 2004 movie, not Crash the 1996 JG Ballard / Cronenberg oddball film. As others said, Oscar bait - set it in Hollywood's own self obsessed land of enchantment and tell some "hard truths" about racial tensions and stereotypes. Like I keep qualifying, it's not BAD, but honest to god it has nothing to actually SAY on the subject, other than "here, look how horrible this is and how paranoid it makes people". There's a few inverting character arcs, but mostly it just muddles around in unpleasantness before calling it a day. American History X has problems of the same kind, but at least it's got a (anti)hero's journey for the main character and also takes a deeper look at how beliefs and actions can affect a broader family.

- Hurt Locker... Does tension really well, but just gets so much factually wrong for something aiming for gritty realism, from ROE to uniform inaccuracies to generally misrepresenting the effects of PTSD and generally drifting with pacing and plot.

Those are some of my gripes. I hope I've explained them adequately and I respect that with something like this, personal opinion DOES carry a lot of weight, since we're talking inductive content analysis. Hope the read is worth your time. Cheers.

How in the name of Sam Hill was that movie universally praised by critics and the peons? Aside from a great performance by Robert Downey Jr., everything about it stunk: the cliche tragistory, the face-palming final battle (complete with monologuing "I'm 5o b4d" guy), and the generic side characters (seriously? Pepper Potts? How lame is that?). Most overrated superhero movie ever; even more than Spider-Man 2. I wouldn't touch either DVD/Blu-Ray disc with a twenty-nine and a half-foot pole.
You do know Pepper Potts is a character from the comics right?

OT: The Hurt Locker, Slumdog Millionaire, and The Notebook.

The Hangover: I thought it wasn't that funny, sure it had a couple moments but it wasn't close to good enough to get the attention it did.

Avatar: At least it looked nice.
