I'm making this as a counterpoint to the usual most overrated game threads. So I ask you, what games have you played that deserved their positive reputations? What games have you checked out to see what all the fuss was about about, only to end up becoming a fan of?

I personally would nominate Minecraft, seeing as how I spent many hours mining stone and building a giant cathedral and still wanting to come back for more.

I would have said Jade Empire, but that gets to people. A lot of people were upset when IGN gave it a 9.9. 9.7 or 9.8 would be a much better rating, and to be fair, I think the game is better than KOTOR was in almost every aspect, including the plot twist. The plot twist in Jade Empire is so amazingly well crafted it's like a giant mystery has completely unraveled before you, and it makes so much sense in the end.

But I'm going to say Red Dead Redemption deserved its rating rather well. It wasn't perfect, but it was a damn great game regardless.

Portal. Played it for the first time at the end of last year, having read over and over how perfect it is. Having played it... yes, it really is.

Mass Effect. Similar situation, and I was even more sceptical of Bioware's reputation (especially in these forums) since I've had trouble getting into KOTOR and was not impressed at all with Dragon Age: Origins. ME, I'm glad to say, was as good as people say it is.

(and I just picked up ME2 in the Steam Sale, so... we'll see...)

I've yet to see a negative review of Jamestown, a bullet hell co-op shmup that was released on Steam a month ago. The only flaws I can see in the game are that there are only five legitimate levels for you to play, and the 4-player co-op is only local.

Let me say that again: A PC game's 4-player multiplayer is only local. You need four people hunched around a single computer to get the full experience. With four keyboards, gamepads, mice, controllers, etc. to play. That's just fucking ridiculous.

but overall, the game is getting 4/5, 4.5/5 scores all over the place, and it thoroughly deserves that rating in all regards. It's a fantastic game, held back by minor problems that don't ruin the experience at all.

Half-Life 2.
Thought that the 98 from PC Gamer and the 96 from Metacritic were well deserved.

Also, Deus Ex, that game definitely illustrated a huge leap forward for the gaming World, and deserves all it's high ratings.

Ocarina of Time... Just... Wonderful.

The world is huge and there are very few flaws. I can understand why you may not like it but there are few reasons to think it's bad

Final Fantasy 6. The opera scene, the world changing plot twist in the MIDDLE of the game (don't want to spoil too much), the quirky characters, and most importantly the villain. By the time you faced him you were ready to slowly kill that clown one active time battle turn at a time.

I just got FF7 and I'm was worried about being disappointed by it not living up to the internet, but now it's more that it'll not live up to FF6.

Civ 2. Quite possibly the most addictive game I've ever played. Later iterations have played with the formula but never actually managed to improve it. I lost months of my life to Civ 2 and I'm quite happy to have done so.
