Wrecking Ball from Just Cause 2. I just can't seem to aim it right. I have 2 kills, of 5 needed, and 1 of which came from the enemy driving into my tethered object and exploding themselves.

If one were already level 20 and one was already equipped, it would be a mercifully brief experience of perhaps six hours at most. If one were instead required to go from level 1 to 20 and beat the game, then it would take a bit longer. Still, my playthrough of the game (the first time) took well under 20 hours and I had long hit the cap by the end.
No doubt it could be done very easily in Fallout 3, especially if we're talking pre-Broken Steel where the level cap's only 20. New Vegas, on the other hand (the game with the Steam achievements), that I can't see doing in any less than 40 hours with the provided stipulations, and my playthroughs run far longer than that as a general matter.

The only real variable as far as I can see is if one is allowed to be at the cap before starting or if they have to make it to the cap while pursuing the goal. Hitting the cap in New Vegas (or broken steel) takes 66,700 experience and as such would require a player to pursue side quests in order to reach the cap (unless they simply go hunting across the wastes for hours on end). It is even worse in New Vegas considering the relative scarcity of incidental contact in the wasteland.

As I see it, hunting across the wastes means knowing where to find 50XP enemies and having the knowhow to get enough caps to supply weapons and ammo. That means Golden/Fire Geckos, the stronger flavors of Feral Ghoul, Radscorpions (regular and Giant but not Small), Cazadores, and Deathclaws. All faced with enough skill to pop 'em, sometimes below the level you'd need to be at to feel comfortable.

Beyond that, knowing where to find a compact place for sidequests (Freeside is great in this regard and GI Blues provides 1500XP, almost 2.5% of the total, for less than twenty minutes' worth of work) helps too.

I'm not saying a speedrun with a full-level stipulation from 1 to 30 is impossible. I'm saying that any way you slice it, you'd need a hell of a lot of endurance (the real-world kind, not the SPECIAL stat), a mini-fridge full of energy drinks, and oh by the way not one crash to desktop. Which I suspect is the real reason they'd take an achievement like that out---nobody on the PC would ever get it.

You know, I didn't even consider that aspect. I don't think one could reasonably complete the game without a CTD or the console equivalent. Even in my relatively bug free play-through the game dumped me unceremoniously to the desktop on two occasions and quietly crashed upon loading a cell at least a half dozen times.

Apparently there's a couple achievements on WoW that would take something like 2500 game play hours to get... and another one that requires your entire guild assisting you and doing 40-50 odd fetch quests to build an item that gets one person the achievement.

Dragon Age origins, the traveller, took me FOUR PLAYTHROUGHS before I got it right. .
Really? Maybe its just the way I play, or maybe I've gone insane due to my father-in-law making dog noises, but I got this achievement entirely by accident.

I honestly can't think of any tough achievements, but that's really because I couldn't care less about earning them- especially things like taking garden gnomes through the game :p

I suppose it's the stupid Guitar Hero and Rockband achievements that stick out for me. I mean, by the time we're all pissed enough to think playing the Endless Setlist is a good idea, we make it through 5 songs and pass out on the floor.

How about Infinite undiscovery 1g achievment... beat the game on normal mode, beat the game on hard mode, beat the game on impossible mode, and beat the Final Boss on impossible.... and its all for 1G! just 1G! the G for beating the game on normal is 99G so basically they are torturing OCD's with uneven gamerscore....
If I hadn't already given up on Infinite Undiscovery because of that damn bat & snake door, that would have certainly cured any interest I initially had in getting a perfect gamerscore.
You too? I spent two fucking hours trying to get that door to open before giving the game back to my friend.
OT: BlazBlue challenge achievements can be....frustrating.

Double whammy on Black Ops - two helicopters with one missile. The only conceivable way to do it would be for one chopper to be hit and crash into the other, but lining up such a shot is impossible; no idea how others have managed; one guy on his walkthrough for it described getting it as sheer luck and having failed for over an hour, I'm inclined to agree.

Rock band 2 do all the songs in one go without pause.

"Bladder of Steel"
Wow, that'd take how many hours?... Also, is there a certain score you have to reach on each one, to add another level of sadism?
BoS requires you to not pause or fail. It's about 6 hours. There's no score beyond whatever the hypothetical minimum is to not fail any song. Which should, for the most part, be pretty low. The achievement can also be done on medium, IITC. So it's mostly just tedium.

Tedium I've never done, but still.

i got that one fairly quickly, and if you fail, just shoot the rocket at the floor because you respawn right where you have to take out the choppers. the trick is to run away so the choppers follow you and then get out of sight so they hover/wait close together for you to come out. shoot the one slightly higher than the other.

Completing Metal Slug with one credit. It's impossible. I've looked through the leaderboards at the top ranking players and none of them have it or any of the lesser versions of it (complete chapter X without losing a life, at least beyond level 2).

i absolutely loathe and frown when games put an "online" achievement like this on there..

i flipping hate these. especially when most top 10% leaderboards are hacked.

In Duke Nukem Forever there is an achievement for turning off the Xbox, leaving the house, meeting an attractive member of the opposite sex, and living happily ever after with three brown haired children knowing that you didn't waste 12 years of your life waiting for a game that would never happens. You have to start over if any of the children have blonde hair though. Very strict, very difficult.

I know Little Rocket Man has been mentioned, but what about Guardin' Gnome (Left 4 Dead 2)?

Pissed me off to carry the gnome that far.
It's funny I actually got it on my first try. People covered me pretty well but I almost lost it at the end.

I know megaman 9 and 10 have some absurd achievements, like beating the game without getting hurt or something like that.

If you've ever played either of those games you'll understand how impossible that is.

I would have to say '7 day survivor' on Dead Rising, it's not that staying alive for 7 days is hard it's the fact that this requires you to play the game for 14 hours consecutively with no saves and with your health constantly depleting because Frank's metabolism apparantly has a very sadistic sense of humour.
Dang I was just getting ready to mention this one I think I tried it for an hour and gave up after that.
