Krav Maga.

Seriously, look it up. It's the Israeli Defense Forces standard martial art. It's insane and practical.
This!

It is probably the most practical fighting style I have ever seen. There is no honor, and there are no real rules. The whole idea is to mess the other guy up as badly as possible because you ar fighting for you life.
ahaha yeah except in a real fight you dont get two guys patiently waiting their turn to hit you with some half-hearted love tap. In reality they'd both jump in and kick you to pieces.
Do some more research and see how it really works. The video I posted was just a demonstration of techniques; not a real match. Krav maga is far more practical when employed in a real combat situation than this video demonstrates. People aren't actually going to kill each other in a spectator match.

Here is another demonstration (limited contact). You will notice techniques borrowed from pancration as well as other martial arts such as judo.

Krav maga is also perfect for dealing with multiple assailants as it emphasizes short punches and low kicks as well as the concept of 360 defense.

Muai Thai (a.k.a. Thai Kickboxing)

Its designed to kill or maim. Nothing else.

If your enemy is on the floor with a broken arm and a shattered pelvis...In laymans terms, they ain't getting up any time soon.

I like to think of the most effective fighting style as "pick up anything near you and beat your attacker with it"-fu.

Bruce Lee's Jeet Kun Do, just by it's very nature.
What Bruce did was take all of the practical stuff from every martial art he studied and put it all together. Now as it's passed down (only only one or two generations so far) a little more gets added from here and there.

Boxing is the only marital art I've ever needed, mixed with some dirty moves as if you know how to punch someone your pretty much set as outside of tournaments fancy karatey gimmicks aren't going to do jack all.

Russian Sambo easily. All attacks have the sole purpose of incapacitating or killing the enemy. Also these guys are trained to take a beating look for what Sambo masters call "Two Minutes Of Heaven" A man has to endure two minutes in which both arms are in arm bars the legs are in ankle locks and the legs of the men doing the arm bars cross over your neck choking you. Try it see what happens

Some of the modern variants of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, which emphasize ground fighting. It's what the U.S. Army teaches now, after they kept getting reports coming back of fights always ending on the ground. Doesn't look fancy, but it's amazingly effective at messing your opponent up.

I have no formal fighting training however I plan on taking up one of the techniques mentioned above. I dont plan to take up more then one lesson a week so with that in mind what would be the best fighting style for a semi big guy to take up that is easy and fast to learn, and will be helpful in a real life situation??????

I do " non sport" jujitsu, it suits my body better than most, and I prefer destroying limbs, muscle and tendons over a jaw any day....it is easily a killing art if thats what your aiming for, It's mainly a samurai art.. as most one on ones between fully armoured samurai ended in jujitsu...simply because hand to hand heavily armoured is sorta useless...but if you get your rival on the ground, and take away mobility one takes a weapon up and under the armour...

now that aspect is not THAT important anymore, but against anyone unarmoured in a street situation it's great for really really laying down death, or pain and humiliation....or if you prefer a simple way of saying " are you really sure you want to fuck with me right now?"

but in truth pretty much all forms have their time and place...does not matter where they come from they all share basic similarity in form, and focus, many are " hybrids" of older forms, or spun off from other forms.. so you really CAN'T go wrong in the sense of one style over another... what decides if it works or not comes down to the individual making their choices of using said style in a situation..

so whats the most practical fighting style/martial art for real life fight situations?

In my opinion it has to be Muay Thai because they have the aspects of a contact sport like boxing or kickboxing, with far less restrictions. I feel being in an environment that allows you to hit an opponent(or be hit)is key for fighting in a real life situation. i also feel that the conditioning of shins provides you with firstly an extra weapon and one less target for an opponent.
To me it seems to allow for more variety in the way you attack a target, without being held down with restrictions. So in effect when placed in a real life situation, you will be prepared to fight whatever kind of attack comes at you.
Savate. A combo of kickboxing, boxing, epee (fencing), stick fighting and wrestling.

Not the current French sport version, the original French Resistance / Underground combative discipline. This version is only known in a few small locations by some well respected teachers, Terrance Bridgeman being one.

The issue with this is it's not something you can really learn. Lee's Jeet Kun Do was an intensely personal style, based on his own talents and limitations. He had one leg shorter than the other (a growth defect), and suited much of the style around that handicap. So, true Jeet Kun Do would require learning ones own handicaps, and crafting a style around those. No one-size-fits-all style would accomplish that (not even Jeet Kun Do).

Straight up boxing

Krav relies to much on the attacker not knowing how to fight and the element of surprise

Range power elusiveness its all in boxing

Why does these threads always make me want to scream "Weeaboo! Weeaboo!"? Also, those thinking about Krav Maga should consider that they keep most of the really dangerous tecniques to the military, and teach a civilian version at whatever fight/sports center you would find it at. As someone said earlier though, any martial art that isn't to fancy would give you the upper hand against an equal though untrained opponent.

i'd say Kung Fu (all styles together)
it's pretty much the underdog in every situation, but all the kung fu styles together give you a answer for every situation and teaches you how to use (makeshift) weapons... seriously, you dont want to fight me if i can get my hands on a rod or staff, no matter how good you are at Krav Maga...
The idea of Krav Maga is that you fight against people less trained in the weapons they are wielding, when they are close up, and i'd say Good Luck getting close to a guy armed with a 2m staff or a nice roundhouse kick
So anyway, Kung Fu all styles combined :3
