I think there were a few serious Black Metal bands, definetly nazi ones...
True enough. Similarly, although it's not as big as black metal, a number of Scandinavian "Black" industrial acts tend to be on the same occult white supremacy kick. Weird little humorless micro culture going on.
It's unfair to paint them all with the same brush though, since most Black/Death/Nordic metal/inudstrial/noise acts AREN'T racist. But it is fair to say it's well fucking confusing when you've got bands who use darkly charged political imagery to establish a dark aesthetic (or who do a straight-faced parody of it as grim humanist satire) and bands who do the same because they are genuinely behind the political ideology in the symbolism they use.
Bah... *shakes fist*
I've always kinda felt (for me) it detracts from music when people start using it as a vehicle for personal politics; left, right, whatever. It takes me out of sound and into social consideration and, more objectively, the bands are usually just preaching to the converted since anyone who isn't on the same page is just going to turn it off.
