Let me put a defining point here. This is not another 'theme song' thread. This is a thread for lyrics which have a particular meaning in your eyes to the world around you, or to your personal experience. So I'll get the ball rolling and yes, I did use the Search. By the way, kindly use spoilers or cut down on long lyric sets.

From dehumanization to arms production,
For the benefit of the nation or its destruction
Power is power, the law of the land,
Those living for death will die by their own hand,
Life's no ordeal if you come to terms,
Reject the system dictating the norms
From dehumanization to arms production,
To hasten the nation towards its destruction
Power is power, the law of the land,
Those living for death will die by their own hand,
From dehumanization to arms production,
To hasten the nation towards its destruction
Power is power, the law of the land,
Those living for death will die by their own hand,
From dehumanization to arms production,
To hasten this nation towards its destruction,
It's your choice, your choice, your choice, your choice,
Peace or annihilation

Mother do you think they'll drop the bomb
Mother do you think they'll like the song
Mother do you think they'll try to break my balls
Ooooh aah, Mother should I build a wall
Mother should I run for president
Mother should I trust the government
Mother will they put me in the firing line
Ooooh aah, is it just a waste of time
Hush now baby, baby don't you cry
Mama's gonna make all of your
Nightmares come true
Mama's gonna put all of her fears into you
Mama's gonna keep you right here
Under her wing
she won't let you fly but she might let you sing
Mama will keep baby cosy and warm
Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe
Of course Mama's gonna help build the wall
Mother do think she's good enough for me
Mother do think she's dangerous to me
Mother will she tear your little boy apart
Oooh aah, mother will she break my heart
Hush now baby, baby don't you cry
Mama's gonna check out all your girl friends for you
Mama won't let anyone dirty get through
Mama's gonna wait up till you get in
Mama will always find out where
You've been
Mamma's gonna keep baby healthy and clean
Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe
You'll always be a baby to me
Mother, did it need to be so high.

Rebel, rebel and yell
'Cause our people still dwell in hell
Locked in a cell
Yes, the structure's a cell
Mad is the story I tell
How long can we wait?
Come on, seein' what's at stake
Action for reaction
If your mind's in a somewhat complacent state
Get a check up
This is a stick up
Our freedom or your life
Lord, I wish I could be peacful
But there can be no sequel
Now freedom must be fundamental
In Johannesburg or South Central
On the mic, 'cause someone should tell 'em
To kick in the township rebellion
Yeah, what about that, sucker?
Yeah, so you thought you could get with the hardlines
That fill your mind
Thoughts, battles fought
And lessons taught
Yes I'll display the fitness
And flip like a gymnast
Raise my fist and resist
Asleep, though we stand in the midst
Of a war
Gotta get mine
Gotta get more
Keepin' the mic warm against the norm
'Cause what does it offer me?
I think often it's nothin' but a coffin
Gotta get wreck
Till our necks never swing on a rope
From here to the cape of no hope
Now freedom must be fundamental
In Johannesburg or South Central
On the mic, 'cause someone should tell 'em
To kick in the township rebellion
Why stand on a silent platform?
Fight the war, fuck the norm
What's it gonna take?
Freeeeeeeeee !
Shackle their minds when they're bent on the cross
When ignorance reigns, life is lost
Why stand on a silent platform?
Fight the war, fuck the norm

I'd have to say this:

Its nine oclock on a saturday
The regular crowd shuffles in
Theres an old man sitting next to me
Makin love to his tonic and gin

He says, son, can you play me a memory?
Im not really sure how it goes
But its sad and its sweet and I knew it complete
When I wore a younger mans clothes

La la la, de de da
La la, de de da da da

Chorus:
Sing us a song, youre the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, were all in the mood for a melody
And youve got us feelin alright

Now john at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And hes quick with a joke or to light up your smoke
But theres someplace that hed rather be
He says, bill, I believe this is killing me.
As the smile ran away from his face
Well Im sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place

Oh, la la la, de de da
La la, de de da da da

Now paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And hes talkin with davy whos still in the navy
And probably will be for life

And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes, theyre sharing a drink they call loneliness
But its better than drinkin alone

Chorus

Its a pretty good crowd for a saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
cause he knows that its me theyve been comin to see
To forget about life for a while
And the piano, it sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say, man, what are you doin here?

Oh, la la la, de de da
La la, de de da da da

Chorus
It's a very poignant little piece when you think about it, and it's true of so many people, not getting to realise their dreams....

In the moment that she left the room the album started skipping
Goodbye to beauty shared with the ones that you love
A shadow that is fallin' over this town
A shadow that is fallin' over this town

Attention all of my worst critics who were once the best of friends
Your rapture grows on the power of
Two romantic speculations
Two romantic specula-tions!

Sighting them shape shifting
Dissolve into the darkness
A final opinion is of less value than an appreciation of
Intolerance for obscurity

The actors told me that
Their pianos are playing at once through the dust
I found it difficult
My sight meant to keep them blotted out
To keep them blotted out and out and out

Two romantic speculations
Two romantic specula-tions!

Sighting them shape shifting
Dissolve into the darkness
A final opinion is of less value than an appreciation of
intolerance

A shadow that is falling over this town [x6]
[in background]
How can you still love me?
There's better, there's better
Better things
There's better things to love
There's better things to love
A shadow that is fallin' over this
A shadow fallin' over
A shadow that is fallin'
A shadow that is fallin' on me

Sighting them shape shifting
Dissolve into the darkness
A final opinion is of less value than an appreciation of
intolerance

Sighting them shape shifting
Dissolve into the darkness
A final opinion is of less value than an appreciation of

As if we were a dream!

You could, and it even gets a snigger. Any favourites though?

I know there is more than one song whose lyrics have a meaning for me, but this is the only one that is jumping out at me at the moment.

I don't even listen to this band anymore, but I still like the words, oddly enough.

So, here I go again,
I want to say no for the upteenth time
The reins, they're slipping out of my reach
I'm trying to enjoy this ride, if just a little while

I know I'm such a lucky girl, but too much I try
I want to stop a while, step out of the frame
And see with a different lens what I can't clearly see

And I'm falling inside again, I'm wanting to escape from this mess I'm in
I'm wanting to,
I'm falling inside, falling inside..

What we never thought has come
The others seem to play too big a part
The sweeteners soon sour and I crave to taste
The fresh new air and breathe again,
Alone again

So here I go, I try to explain
Just find myself in circles again
So here we go, we try to explain
Just find ourselves in circles again

So, here I go again, even lucky girl get the blues
But I'm loving this ride when I see full view
And we're all here again, alone again.

There's another one, but damn, finding a translation is a pain. Bargh.

Another two.

Radioactive Toy - Porcupine Tree

Run through forests on a hot Summer day
Trying to break down walls of numbing pain
Give me the freedom to destroy
Give me radioactive toy
Taste the water from a stream of running death
Eat the apple and cough a dying breath
Feel the sun burning through your black skin
Pour me into a hole, inform my next of kin
Run through graveyards on a dusty Winter day
Spit the dirt out and try to say...

Don't fret precious I'm here, step away from the window
Go back to sleep

Lay your head down child
I won't let the boogeyman come

Counting bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drums

Pay no mind to the rabble
Pay no mind to the rabble

Head down, go to sleep
To the rhythm of the war drums

Pay no mind what other voices say
They don't care about you, like I do, like I do
Safe from pain and truth and choice and other poison devils,
See, they don't give a fuck about you, like I do.

Just stay with me, safe and ignorant,
Go back to sleep
Go back to sleep

Lay your head down child
I won't let the boogeyman come
Count the bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drums

Pay no mind to the rabble
Pay no mind to the rabble

Head down, go to sleep to the rhythm of the war drums

I'll be the one to protect you from
Your enemies and all your demons

I'll be the one to protect you from
A will to survive and a voice of reason

I'll be the one to protect you from
Your enemies and your choices son
They're one in the same
I must isolate you
Isolate and save you from yourself

Swayin to the rhythm of the new world order and
Count the bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war drums

The boogeymen are coming
The boogeymen are coming

Keep your head down, go to sleep, to the rhythm of a war drums

Stay with me
Safe and ignorant
Just stay with me
Hold you and protect you from the other ones
The evil ones
Don't love you son,
Go back to sleep

Two by leonard cohen and one by neil young (sorry about the length of the post but I don't know how to do the drop down thing)

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died

Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that youve been faithful
Ah give or take a night or two
Everybody knows youve been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

And everybody knows that its now or never
Everybody knows that its me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah when youve done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old black joes still pickin cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows

And everybody knows that the plague is coming
Everybody knows that its moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But theres gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows

And everybody knows that youre in trouble
Everybody knows what youve been through
From the bloody cross on top of calvary
To the beach of malibu
Everybody knows its coming apart
Take one last look at this sacred heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

Oh everybody knows, everybody knows
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows

Now Ive heard there was a secret chord
That david played, and it pleased the lord
But you dont really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew her
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
You say I took the name in vain
I dont even know the name
But if I did, well really, whats it to you?
Theres a blaze of light
In every word
It doesnt matter which you heard
The holy or the broken hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah

I did my best, it wasnt much
I couldnt feel, so I tried to touch
Ive told the truth, I didnt come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
Ill stand before the lord of song
With nothing on my tongue but hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah

There's colors on the street
Red, white and blue
People shufflin' their feet
People sleepin' in their shoes
But there's a warnin' sign
on the road ahead
There's a lot of people sayin'
we'd be better off dead
Don't feel like Satan,
but I am to them
So I try to forget it,
any way I can.

Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world.

I see a woman in the night
With a baby in her hand
Under an old street light
Near a garbage can
Now she puts the kid away,
and she's gone to get a hit
She hates her life,
and what she's done to it
There's one more kid
that will never go to school
Never get to fall in love,
never get to be cool.

Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world.

We got a thousand points of light
For the homeless man
We got a kinder, gentler,
Machine gun hand
We got department stores
and toilet paper
Got styrofoam boxes
for the ozone layer
Got a man of the people,
says keep hope alive
Got fuel to burn,
got roads to drive.

Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world
Keep on rockin' in the free world,
Keep on rockin' in the free world.

So denied so I lied are you the now or never kind
In a day and a day love I'm gonna be gone for good again
Are you willing to be had are you cool with just tonight
Here's a toast to all those who hear me all too well

Here's to the nights we felt alive
Here's to the tears you knew you'd cry
Here's to goodbye
Tomorrow's gonna come too soon

Put your name on the line along with place and time
Wanna stay not to go I wanna ditch the logical
Here's a toast to all those who hear me all too well

Here's to the nights we felt alive
Here's to the tears you knew you'd cry
Here's to goodbye
Tomorrow's gonna come too soon

All my time is froze in motion
Can't I stay an hour or two or more
Don't let me let you go
Here's a toast to all those who hear me all too well

Here's to the nights we felt alive
Here's to the tears you knew you'd cry
Here's to goodbye
Tomorrow's gonna come too soon

As for the world around me, I'm gonna have to say every Rage Against The Machine song excluding the "Renegades" album (Seeing as that was all covers).

And for more personally relevant songs, more or less every Motion City Soundtrack song.

<spoiler=Eleanor Rigby>Ah ----- look at all the lonely people
Ah ----- look at all the lonely people

Eleanor rigby, picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for
All the lonely people, where do they all come from?
All the lonely people where do they all belong?

Father mckenzie, writing the words to a sermon that no-one will hear
No one comes near
Look at him working, darning his socks in the night when nobodys there
What does he care
All the lonely people, where do they all come from?
All the lonely people where do they all belong?

Ah ----- look at all the lonely people
Ah ----- look at all the lonely people

Eleanor rigby, died in the church and was buried along with her name,
Nobody came
Father mckenzie, wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave
No one was saved

All the lonely people, where do they all come from?
All the lonely people where do they all belong?
A song about dieing alone, which happens to everyone.

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but its sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought Id something more to say

Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
And when I come home cold and tired
Its good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells.

Just a few, and as it's all I've listened to for three solid weeks, all these songs are by William Elliott Whitmore.

<spoiler=One Man's Shame>Don't alter my altar
Don't desecrate my shrine
My church is the water
And my home is underneath the shady pines
Don't underestimate the spine in a poor man's back
When it's against the wall and his future's black

One man's story is another man's shame
I ain't bound for glory, no, no, I'm bound for flames
So take to the woods boy, and cover up your tracks
Go away child, go away child, and don't look back

And sad is the lullaby from a mother's heart and soul
When she knows her child has strayed from the foal
And the parish will perish
By death's cruel hand
And finish the job that fate began
All that static in the attic,
That's just an old drunk ghost
His chains are rattlin' but his end is close
Ain't no hell below and ain't no heaven above
I came for the drinks but I stayed for the love

One man's story is another man's shame
I ain't bound for glory, no, no, I'm bound for flames
So take to the woods boy, and cover up your tracks
Go away child, go away child, and don't look back

Don't alter my altar
Don't desecrate my shrine
My church is the water
And my home is underneath the shady pines
Don't underestimate the spine in a poor man's back
When it's against the wall and his future's black

One man's story is another man's shame
I ain't bound for glory, no, no, I'm bound for flames
So take to the woods boy, and cover up your tracks
Go away child, go away child, and don't look back
<spoiler=Dry>Well the song of the blackbird is mighty clear
On a mornin' such as this
And all those useless pains & fears
Those things that I won't miss

And the Morning Glories and Queen Anne's lace
Baptized by the wind
These inspirations are my saving grace
In these times we're living in

Make a hard man humble
Make a proud woman hide
Her eyes from the light of day
When all the crops have withered and died
And the soil has blown away
The ground is so dry
The river's on its hands and knees
And I hear that tune in the breeze

The crow is callin' and I hear him well
Up in the red bud tree
And the stories that you've lived to tell
Pass 'em down to me

Whisper the truth
Into your children's ears
Let them know
Let them understand
Let them hear

The song of the blackbird is mighty loud
Through the evening mist
The moon is up and it looks so proud
Lookin' down on a night, on a night like this
<spoiler=Cold and Dead>Well sing with me a hymn
For the light that has dimmed
For the heart that no longer beats
And even until death when nothing else is left and the pain has finally ceased
And the sun will never shine on this cold dead heart of mine

Sing with me a hymn
For the body that's grown weary
For the voice that's forever still
And my lips will utter praise
Until the end of days for the space that can not be filled
And the sun will never shine on this cold dead heart of mine

Well I will be your roof
Your shelter from the storm
Your footing against the wind
And I'll mend for you my dear
Those hopes that have been torn
And I hope our paths will cross again
And the sun will never shine on this cold dead heart of mine

I'll just take meaningful extracts from the lyrics of songs rather than the whole thing (the majority of which will probably end up being by Pink Floyd)

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
He makes me down to lie
Through pastures green He leadeth me the silent waters by.
With bright knives He releaseth my soul.
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places.
He converteth me to lamb cutlets,
For lo, He hath great power, and great hunger.
When cometh the day we lowly ones,
Through quiet reflection, and great dedication
Master the art of karate,
Lo, we shall rise up,
And then we'll make the bugger's eyes water.
If you should go skating
On the thin ice of modern life
Dragging behind you the silent reproach
Of a million tear-stained eyes
Don't be surprised when a crack in the ice
Appears under your feet.
You slip out of your depth and out of your mind
With your fear flowing out behind you
As you claw the thin ice.

Good morning, Worm your honor.
The crown will plainly show
The prisoner who now stands before you
Was caught red-handed showing feelings
Showing feelings of an almost human nature;
This will not do.
Call the schoolmaster!

I always said he'd come to no good
In the end your honor.
If they'd let me have my way I could
Have flayed him into shape.
But my hands were tied,
The bleeding hearts and artists
Let him get away with murder.
Let me hammer him today?

Crazy,
Toys in the attic I am crazy,
Truly gone fishing.
They must have taken my marbles away.
Crazy, toys in the attic he is crazy.

You little shit you're in it now,
I hope they throw away the key.
You should have talked to me more often
Than you did, but no! You had to go
Your own way, have you broken any
Homes up lately?
Just five minutes, Worm your honor,
Him and Me, alone.

Baaaaaaaaaabe!
Come to mother baby, let me hold you
In my arms.
M'lud I never wanted him to
Get in any trouble.
Why'd he ever have to leave me?
Worm, your honor, let me take him home.

Crazy,
Over the rainbow, I am crazy,
Bars in the window.
There must have been a door there in the wall
When I came in.
Crazy, over the rainbow, he is crazy.

The evidence before the court is
Incontrivertable, there's no need for
The jury to retire.
In all my years of judging
I have never heard before
Of someone more deserving
Of the full penaltie of law.
The way you made them suffer,
Your exquisite wife and mother,
Fills me with the urge to defecate!

"Hey Judge! Shit on him!"

Since, my friend, you have revealed your
Deepest fear,
I sentence you to be exposed before
Your peers.
Tear down the wall

When I was young and they packed me off to school
and taught me how not to play the game,
I didn't mind if they groomed me for success,
or if they said that I was just a fool.
So I left there in the morning
with their God tucked underneath my arm
their half-assed smiles and the book of rules.
So I asked this God a question
and by way of firm reply,
He said -- I'm not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays.
I'm an atheist, but this song has always made sense to me.
It's basicly about how the Singer beleives in the existence of god, but rejects any organised religion.

Bleating and babbling I fell on his neck with a scream.
Wave upon wave of demented avengers
March cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream.
Have you heard the news?
The dogs are dead.
You better stay home
And do as you're told.
Get out of the road if you want to grow old.

Forward he cried from the rear
and the front rank died.
And the general sat and the lines on the map
moved from side to side

I've got nicotine stains on my fingers.
I've got a silver spoon on a chain.
I've got a grand piano to prop up my mortal remains.

"And I am not frightened of dying, any time will do, I
don't mind. Why should I be frightened of dying?
There's no reason for it, you've gotta go sometime."

[sup]okay technically that's bit's not really sung, more sort of spoken, but it counts dammit[/sup]

The band is just fantastic,
that is really what I think.
Oh by the way, which one's Pink?

And also I like the words

Have a cigar

In general.

Gonna lose my way tomorrow,
gonna give away my car.
I'd take you along with me,
but you would not go so far.
Don't see what I do not want to see,
you don't hear what I don't say.
Won't be what I don't want to be,
I continue in my way

Also I'm now quite partial to my new theme song (I know I know... not the right thread for it, but just try and stop me)

"By your powers combined, I am Iron Ninja!"

Iron Ninja, he's our hero
Gonna take the lobsters down to zero

He's our powers magnified
And he's fighting on the Crabs side

Iron Ninja, he's our hero
Gonna take the lobsters down to zero

Gonna help him cut asunder
Bad dudes who like to rescue the president.

"You'll pay for this Iron Ninja!"

We're the Ninjateers
You can be one too
'Cause kidnapping the president is the thing to do!

Rescuing the president is not the way
Hear what Iron Ninja has to say!

"I'm coming for you next!"

I'll agree with you that Pink Floyd has a lot of meaninful stuff. Hell, the entire Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wall albums carry overriding philosophies. It's almost like it's a sin to listen to just one song, or skip one.

There's also Animals. The way they talk about people through the actions of animals is amazing.

EDIT: another relevant song.
As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin'
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries
'cause if there's one thing that she don't need
it's another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto

People, don't you understand
the child needs a helping hand
or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day
Take a look at you and me,
are we too blind to see,
do we simply turn our heads
and look the other way

Well the world turns
and a hungry little boy with a runny nose
plays in the street as the cold wind blows
In the ghetto

And his hunger burns
so he starts to roam the streets at night
and he learns how to steal
and he learns how to fight
In the ghetto

Then one night in desperation
a young man breaks away
He buys a gun, steals a car,
tries to run, but he don't get far
And his mama cries

As a crowd gathers 'round an angry young man
face down on the street with a gun in his hand
In the ghetto

As her young man dies,
on a cold and gray Chicago mornin',
another little baby child is born
In the ghetto
