In real life, I would have to say the Mosin Nagant 44 carbine, with heavy ball ammunition. It's a slow thud that hurts even with ear protection on, and the fact that the clothing of anyone within 20 feet around waves from the burst is impressive. I've never found a firearm sound in a videogame that really felt realistic, which is probably good, because even firing a .22 without ear protection makes your ears hurt. Firing a .357 in a 12x12 room without ear protection will permanently damage your hearing, and it just sounds like a loud bass bang followed by ringing the rest of your life.

There's this gun in L4D2 and it sounds like a horse cantering.
I can't remember what it's called, but I just love the sound :]

The SG5 from James Bond: Nightfire. Oooo its so satisfieingly loud and angry sounding.
The Heavy's chain gun from Team Fortress 2 is a close second. I love walking around a corner with my gun spinning to bump into a cornered pyro that freaks out when he sees me. Its awesome.

The double barrel shotgun from Doom 2. Have a sound system with some kick to it, and half the neighbourhood knew when you fired.

I don't know the model, but the target rifle I used back in cadets. I think it's like a L110 or something. Hefty 7.62mm rounds, thing just makes a boom when it goes off.

In game it'd be a M-4A1 Pulse Rifle from the Alien and Predator games.

Welcome to the Escapist!

Looking at Duke Nukem, Ripper from 3D comes to mind.

The gun in assassin's creed 2 - the echoing crack was very satisfying, combined with the barking of the dog in the distance...sigh

I really thought most of the rifles in the original Call of Duty sounded wicked especially the Springfield and the M1 Garand, the Flax 88's MG42 and BAR as well.

Although out of all the games ive played ive found the most awesome weapon sound to be when a Baneblade in Dawn of War fires its main gun, if that counts.

I dunno why I just freakin love it.

You know, gun sound effects tend not to sound quite as good as those in movies. I think the reason for it is that games nowerdays try to use the authentic recordings of the real guns. Movies however do the opposite: The sound effect for Indiana Jones' revolver was actually taken from a shotgun, and with the bass was boosted. Games should try to boost the bass as much as possible. Too hell with realism, I want a cannon!

The Mulcher in Gears of War 2 of course. There is nothing better than hearing that thing fire whilst dismembering people and pumping rounds into them, blood flowing everywhere on your screen.
Ahh, Gear of War fans.. :p

I quite liked the AK47 and Raging Bull in Vegas 2, as well as the MG36 in Bad Company. Good times. :)

Edit: Oh, and the pistol in Bioshock, loved that little gun.
