I've seen some polls about this show, but everyone has different opinions.
What were weapons, people or outcomes that surprised you?

For example: I was honestly astounded by how powerful a spartan's shield was!

The whole show is very intruging and I think those who have watched the show have said "wow" a few times while watching.

Yeah, pretty much the shield was the most hilarious thing ever.
How was it hilarious?
Ninja: *lunges a kick at spartan*
Spartan: *Blocks with shield.*
Ninja: *Gets hit with shield.*
Ninja: *Gets hit with shield again*
Ninja: *Throws shuriken at spartan.*
Spartan: *Blocks with shield.*
Me: "It didn't work the first six times....."
Oh, I wasn't even thinking about the fight video. I was actually surprised at the amount of force behind the shield when he was slamming it into the dummy. It was very impressive.

I thought the funniest thing was when the Pirate knocked the Knight over, flipped up his visor, and shot him in the face at point blank range with his flintlock pistol.

I don't think this show airs in the UK- so i recommend Brit's or any one else unfamiliar with this to look on youtube- this here is a fight between a Spartan and a Ninja-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrrY_1lVLNI

Looks like a show done for the lulz rather than something that seriously speculates who would win in a given situation.

There's sort of a reason Spartans are always shown kicking serious ass. It's closely accurate. In the ancient Olympics, they're the ones keeping everybody - and I mean everybody - in line.

I watch the show but I often sigh at their match ups, like really ninja vs spartan. Ninja would be stealthed in the night and wouldn't attack directly. So many of fights are just dumb because its a head on fight. Also there are a variety of weapons that would be incredible ways to stun/confuse the opponents but they don't get the edge because they aren't deadly so they have like no effect in the simulation. But in real life if I threw powders/poison in your eye and you're stumbling around I get to jam a weapon into and finish you off.
That and it seems like a lot of the choreographed fighting doesn't reflect what was and wasn't favored. Ie in the Irish Soilders vs the Taliban the one guy ran around and took out almost all the guys himself but his squad got mowed down. Hell he even used the taliban weapon to take out a guy. How does that get computed?
Some of the tests also seem stupid, its like strike this so we can see the damage, and the tester just shreds it to bits with multiple strikes. Of course a side of beef is going to be mutilated after like 10 strikes, but lets see the damage a single blow will land because no opponent is gonna let you just take blow after blow.

Seriously, the ninja were a bunch of assassins and the spartans were front-line infantry.
They could never, ever be compared.

In the William Wallace vs Shaka Zulu episode the useful the Targe and Dirk combo was. Also in the Shaolin Monk vs Maori Warrior how badass and battle breaking the dual hook blades were at least in that duel.

I was suprised at how hard Chuck Liddell punched o_O
I knew the guy could hit, just not that hard.

I also found it shocking that the Sling did so much damage to the face.

Have they ever featured Roman Legionaries on the show?
No but them against an Aztec Worrior would be good.
Romans would rape the Aztecs. It was those sorts of unorganized barbarian attacks that the Legions were most effective against.

In the Viking vs. Samurai episode.

When they claimed the Viking used a 5 foot axe for short range but a 3 foot sword for medium range.

How is 5 foot shorter than 3 foot?

The only reasoning I could see behind this is that they didn't want to pit the Samurai's katana against the Viking's longsword, seeing as the longsword would most probably shatter the katana and the myths surrounding it.

Also despite having more powerful and longer ranged bows, when facing a Samurai at long range armed with a yumi, a Viking would throw 2 spears instead of using his bow.

It's almost like the Viking wanted the Samurai to win, which is very surprising.

In the gladiator vs apache episode, how the gladiator just walked around while the apache was knocked on his ass. As if that motion is engrained in his head or some shit.

In the pirate vs knight episode (my favorite by the way), how the pirate didn't seemed to be anything but temporarily stunned by the morning star hitting him.

The Viking longsword would literally shatter the katana. Literally.
And there were no Vikings that used a 5' axe.

I'm not surprised at it ever. "Agile Fighting art vs Bruiser. Whoa, implementaions they use are violent. Looks like the Agile speedster wins. Gun'ight."
