So I guess I will define recent as having come out in the last year. People talk so negatively about games on these forums I thought I'd ask, what's the most surprising recent release? One that you did not expect to be worthwhile and turned out to be a lot of fun. I bring this up because I've rented Sleeping Dogs. I never gave that game a second thought but the reviews looked interesting and since Gamefly never sends me anything I actually want I got it in the mail.

And man I am having a blast. I love living out asian movie action scenes. Free running from the cops then jacking a car to run around Hong Kong jumping to other vehicles has yet to get boring for me. The hand to hand combat is a fun change from just shooting everything and looks really brutal. I wasn't into the idea of playing a cop but it's made the game more interesting. When I'm on a mission and start destroying property and wreaking havoc and I see my cop score going down I can practically hearing some sergeant going "Your wreckless ways have no place in this here Wei. How am I supposed to clean this up? You're going to get yourself killed! etc etc". And the story is surprisingly more personal than I thought it would be.

Seeing as I hated Bioshock, I borrowed Bioshock Infinate from my brother. I was pleasently surprised by how much I liked it, ok I thought the story sagged a little in the middle and Ghost Mum got annoying to fight by the third time but it pulled it together at the end to be probably my surprise of the year so far.

I'm playing through Deadly Premonition: Directors Cut recently, I heard this game was weird. But man, this game in weird, funny and really creepy. Killing the zombie monsters and having them mournfully say "I don't want to diiieeee!" is one of the creepiest sounds ever in a game. They are not scary as such because your gun has infinate ammo, but I dread them because that snippet of speach really sends chills down my spine.
