Most underrated console?

We've seen it all before: a really great console with great games, good hardware, good controller etc. A console that deserves to be very successful...and yet it's just a "cult classic." It was completely overshadowed by another console that was also good but simply had a hell of a lot better sales and more publicity.

What is that console you really like, but was just in the shadow of the big kid on the block? Tell the console, why it's great, and who got more attention.

DREAMCAST!

Believe me, it's the ultimate one of these, the most underrated console in existence.

It's too bad the PS2 swamped it though, it really was revolutionary and had some kick-ass games for it too. Soul Calibur being one.
This.

The poor Dreamcast had so much to offer.

Dreamcast by a mile.

Even I didn't give a shit about it until my brother picked one up about 3 years ago. It was a great machine!

my favorite console was the gamecube, but i guess it was loved enough.

*mumble* could've been loved more though.

PC Engine. Early CD based console but didn't do much outside Japan and was buried by the SNES then everyone forgot that it existed when the Playstation was released.

The Dreamcast. I think that it had an awesome set of games(Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi 1 and 2, and Skies of Arcadia.) I think that it was just too ahead of its time though. Which I think is a shame.

Anyone naming current gen consoles shouldn't really be calling those systems "underrated". They are all doing quite well in sales and all have titles that make the console worth owning depending on what type of gamer you are.

I don't think anyone "underrates" the PS3. Maybe some console fanboys hate Sony for some reason but in today's market it's about personal preference.

In my opinion it would have to be the Dreamcast as a few have mentioned. Didn't survive long but was way ahead of it's time.

I also think the Gamecube was slightly underrated. A poor selection of launch titles made me pass it by in that console gaming generation, but I bought one last year and have played some really overlooked titles on it like BG&E, Eternal Darkness, Second Sight, etc, which turned out to be phenomenal.

The PlayStation 3. Either it's got no good exclusives, (load of crap) it's too expensive, (in terms of online costs and blu ray player and bluetooth it's similar to 360) or it's not compatible with ps2, (if you want to play ps2 games, obviously don't move to seventh gen then.)
Everyone seems to hate the PS3.

I agree. Despite being the "kiddie system" amongst adults and "hardcore gamers" (i.e. FPS fanboys and the sheep who buy Madden Roster Update 20XX), the GamCube had a lot to offer, such as the technically-proficient Mario franchises, the massively risky-and-successful Metroid Prime with it's leap to 3D-FPS, two Zelda games that were excellent successors to Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, and the finest Star Wars franchise ever to bestowed upon console that is Rogue Squadron.

Seriously, I never gave a hoot and hollar about the GameCube until I bought one on a whim and realized that it has just as much to offer as the PS2, Dreamcast, and Xbox. I cannot believe the Halo-Box sold more than the GameCube. I swear if it wasn't for Halo and Star Wars: KOTOR then the Xbox would have flopped harder than the Sega Saturn.

The PC. The internet told me it was Jesus, experience told me it the dump my dog left in the yard.

Truthfully I don't own a gaming PC but why pay 1000 bucks plus 20 for a gamepad (because keyboards are not fun to kill things with) to play a game I can play almost identically on my 400 dollar 360 just because it has slightly different gameplay. That or the PS3. I'm not a 360 fan boy but whenever I use one we spend more time trying to get the thing to work than we do playing.

I'll agree on the Dreamcast. It really had no huge, must have killer apps for it, but it seemed to have no terrible games either. I picked it up right after it went dead for cheap and had a good time

Probably the Dreamcast.

Just goes to show that Good Console =/= Good Sales.

It's the games that are important, just look at the mind-buggering popularity of the PS2.

Dreamcast (pretty obvious answer, I know).
But I put the GameCube in second place. Not many serious gamers played it, and most games were made for the PS2 and/or Xbox. Granted, it doesn't help that the damn thing was purple...
