Most underrated game due to nostalgia

My pick would have to be Resident Evil 4. Not because of the game itself, which is awesome - but the reaction of hardcore Res-Evil fans. A lot of fans didn't like the new camera viewpoint, didn't like the new zombs, did'nt like the characters. I believe though that the first 3 RE games were over-rated.

People have a kinda weird perspective with Playstation games. I think it may be because the Playstation was their first proper game console, or it brought gaming back into their lives. Anyway, a lot of Playstation games, RE1-3 included were pretty damn clunky to play. Look at Quake2 as well on the PS... it took longer to figure out the controls than any modern game ever will. I used to play Quake2 deathmatch, split screen with 4 players - there would always be 1 player who had forgotten the controls. Thank god for the Dreamcast coming along and proving that FPS games can work on consoles.

Anyway, RE4, because it broke the RE mould and pissed off a lot of fans... but at the same time it's arguably the best RE game ever made, hell it's one of the best games ever made IMO. I bought a Gamecube just for RE4, and that was before I'd even seen RE4, just going by a friends enthusiasm after getting an import version.

The sheer childishness of the humour, the ham handed attempts to be offensive and "comically un-pc" (aka "racist, sexist and xenophobic but self aware of it, so its fine") and the shoddy gameplay are all legitimate reasons to hate the game. Critics hated it. No one bought it. It didn't deserve a sequel.

But it ain't too bad. I'd even call it a guilty pleasure at times. On the occasions the humour did work, I was fucking laughing my ass off. I don't think I've ever laughed as hard as the time when I kicked someone's office door in, urinated on their desk and demanded they signed my petition. Or the time where the game literally tests your patience by making you wait in the queue at a post office full of idiots.

I'd have to go with Zelda: the Wind Waker, I seem to be the only one (at least within my social circles) who liked that game, I loved it, yes even the sailing mechanic, it was cool, the only slightly annoying part was that one part when you have to find the 8 shards of the triforce of courage

I don't think they rate it because of the endings, its just that the endings are all that anyone ever talks about. Otherwise, people typically like the game and most were rating it well. I don't think it counts.

I would have to say Arcania Gothic 4, sure it was a massively dissapointing departure from the hardcore gameplay of the first 3 gothic games but on its own it was still an enjoyable game that can be quite fun if you play on hard as a fire mage burninating everything.

I'm curious to see if Deus Ex: Invisible War turns up here- at all.

Somewhere, someone is always defending Deus Ex: Invisible War. The tagline might as well be "it isn't as bad as people say".

In fairness, it isn't. I played it. I can't even figure out for certain what makes the sequel so damn different from the first that everyone gets upset over it. I didn't like the opening cinematic, (or the ending ones, come to think of it), but that's really all I have to gripe about.

I haven't met any really who knows about Team Buddies or even likes it. Even most review websites disliked it for being too "hard". Great game tho, all i'd play as a kid for awhile.

I mean Ive just gotten into metroid for the second time (starting with zero mission...wanting to play the prime series)

and that just upsets me...I havnt played Fusion but it doesnt seem like a definitive "end" to the series...we need the next game and (incoming Bias) I'd prefer something on a main console rather than a hand held

and aparently other M was mainly the doing of the original creator....I mean to be honest between that and it being on a Nintendo system[footnote/] ok, I don't know how the Wii U will do so I can't call it...mainly in regards to the Wii[/footnote] I'd almost wish the Metroid IP gets purchased by somone more capable..hell [i/]even EA[/i] if they were to give it to the hands of somone good

FF9 is something I feel fits into this category better. A lot of people weren't ready for the return to stylized graphics and a fantasy setting after 7 and 8, but...well. Most people I ask who did try 9 say it's their favorite.

Currently playing this right now... I completely missed this gem in its time. People keep lauding FF7 and 8 (dealing specifically with that generation) and no one ever talks about 9. I played 7 to the end, but never beat seph (fucked up my team selection and botched my save order). I could never get beyond the opening hours in 8... the pacing is atrocious. I missed 10 and 10-2 entirely, but the character designs were a major turn off for me (especially Tidus). I got 12 because it looked fresh, and while it was refreshing in terms of gameplay (I was one of the few who liked the new system) and environement (a nice throwback to Vagrant Story aesthetics), the characters were awful. Aside from Fran and Balthier, the cast was so dull. I hate Vaan with a passion, his friend too, the princess is a chore to follow in story segments and Basch seems to stop having a personality for large portions of the game.

9 had me hooked right at the start... it is the best introductory sequence to an FF game I've played so far. Cast is great. An upbeat protagonist (Vidaine is so refreshing), a princess with character growth (that is nearly unheard of), the morose characters are endearing, not off putting (Vivi and to a lesser extent Amamrant), the best protector role (Steiner is awesome... I love his design as well) and an aesthetically diverse cast (They all look distinct and different).

Despite it's cutesy exterior, the story doesn't pull any punches. It has some issues (like the Queen not getting a proper character development or back story... which you'd think would be important given certain events

You know what's sad? That might be the last return to form we see for Final Fantasy. The formula of super serious, perfect bodied, human teens (or adults who look like teens) being the focus of all major FF releases lately, we might never see such a diverse character roster again.

I couldn't get into 13 (was one of those people who grew weary of the pacing) so I don't know how they play with the characters in it, but it seemed to be fitting into this trend (FF7, FF8, FF10, FF12 etc.).

Anyway, despite what I said earlier, I think 12 can be brought into this list as well. Its a good game, the gambit and license system works, combat is engaging and dynamic, the story isn't bad either (it has a sluggish start, but once you get out of the starting town, it picks up quickly) and Balthier and Fran keep me from wanting to throttle the cast.

yeah...I mean unlike DA2 I think the situation was a lot less "clear cut"...sure ME3 had its probelms...

but I'd like to think part of it was people HATED the endings because they loved the game...or the series at least

I do not agree. There are many flaws in the game, it's just that the ending tends to overwhelm the rest of them. If the game had a great ending then I think people would be a lot more appreciative, but there'd still be other issues that exist.

I honestly don;t think Id care about the issues had the ending been good (ok yeah, Im a fan I dont care about the issues anyway)

I mean it was the one thing..the ONE THING that really needed to work..I mean look pletny of people hate ME2...somtimes all the hate gets a bit much

Banjo Kazooie nuts and bolts was..and still is to me a great big middle finger to everything that was great about the series (gameplay at least)

HOEVER after learning about how many iterations the concept went through and what came out the blender to be the final product...I'm a little more lenient on it

I am also not sure the term 'nostalgia' can really be used in a game that's 6 months old...

I'd say Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. It holds up so much better than Ocarina of time in just about every regard. Not mention that it's basically the closest zelda's gonna get to being the elder scrolls.

I would second this. The world just seemed much larger, more alive and, a lot more fun to explore in Wind Waker than in Skyward Sword. I also preferred the cartoon-like art style Wind Waker had going for it. It made the game seem really unique among the other Zelda games and other games of that era in general.

Halo CE. Between the hate from the non-Xbox community and the huge next gen that came with Halo 2, the game was forgotten for having a great campaign and unequivocally the most balanced multiplayer ever seen in a shooter.

Riven (Myst II) kind of ruined fan reaction to the next four games. A major pity, too, because they were awesome.

Myst III gives us some actual urgency, (literally) organic puzzles and runs us through a series of world-building classrooms without a teacher, before culminating in a tense and dramatic standoff and climax, all featuring BRAD DOURIF as the bad guy: "But it's not Riven!"

Myst IV gives us the most jaw-droppingly gorgeous game possibly ever (I think it looks better than Crysis, actually, due to its "bubble" environments as opposed to full 3D) , lets us look deep into characters from the first game, and ratchets the urgency and tension to levels aboove Myst III (before crapping itself in the last two hours): "It's not Riven!"

Uru delivers an entirely different adventure, focusing entirely on lore as opposed to the underlying story throughout the rest of the series, and delivers the most rewarding moments, the best puzzles and the most infuriating stumpers of the whole series: "Not Riven!"

Myst V ties all the loose ends, smoothly introduces a new puzzle mechanic, and ends the series gracefully: "NOT. RIVEN."

Sheesh.

Please be careful what you wish for. I do understand where you're coming from, but giving the franchise to EA is a good way to have everything that made Metroid great in the first place (exploring and enemies/lore) completely stripped from the series in favor of what's popular (multiplayer and lots of DLC). I'd rather Nintendo just hand the property back to Retro Studios as opposed to anyone else getting it.

OT: Kirby Airride. It's a deceitfully casual game that gives you a checklist of things to do in order to unlock more content, with three modes and so much replayability.

oh...I know in the long run it probably wouldnt be a good thing

but the fact is right now its almost looking like a more apealing alternitive to having the next metroid game stew around in limbo for god knows how long and come out on a [strike/]second rate[/S] nintendo platform

but of coarse thats just me and my biases....don;t worry...its not gonna happen
