I don't think I understand the question. Don't we all play games for fun, making them unnecessary by definition (well, except from maybe relaxing and preventing burn-out)? And as such, isn't the most important metric that a games is either fun or interesting, regardless of whether it's completely similar to another game you have already played (or a straight port in the case of chrono trigger there)? I could understand some of the mentions above, of games that are simply bad or no fun for the one playing them, but then, why play them at all?

Far Cry 2 HANDS DOWN. 90% percent of game time was driving, and enemies in the same cars could go faster than you, so you would have to stop and kill them, fix your car, the go and do it again 10 times before you reached your objective...horrible horrible game

The title of this thread is the Most Unnecessary Games, where the bad ones likely didn't even need to exist, and the better ones may even have been really good if they hadn't been sequels or expansions and the like.

Additional, any game that are rereleased more than once or rereleased after only a few years.

Who the hell thought this was a good idea?
But you could get Jirachi.
IF YOU OWNED THE MOTHER-FUCKING PAL VERSION!!!
...
Sorry. I played through that entire game expecting a Jirachi and got shit in return.

Oh, and Shadow the Hedgehog.

I would say most of the GTA Games after 3.
Just to be clear, this includes:

GTA: Vice City
GTA: San Andreas (Considered by many to be the high point of the series)
GTA: Liberty City Stories
GTA: Vice City Stories
GTA: Chinatown Wars
GTA IV

At least one of those probably ought to be included, and I'd add in GTA IV just because of the excellent acting and world building talents on display. I'm equally tempted to remove it from the list because of the stupid, stupid friend system.

Most of them.

Because most games suck and don't add anything new or improve gaming as a whole.

I can agree with this. I really, really wanted to like the game, but the simple fact that I was forced to endure this little game at every turn eventually forced my hand. There was a LOT of good stuff to be had, but the thing you spent the most time doing was driving until a checkpoint. If you were smart, you'd just get out, kill everyone at the checkpoint, and continue on your way. If you expected to somehow avoid a gunbattle with fancy driving, the simple fact that AI controlled vehicles were substantially faster (in spite of being the same vehicle with a heavier burden to carry) and the fact that a handful of rounds made any attempt at a clean getaway come to a grinding halt, ensured you would pay your dues.

Most unnecessary games would have to be Halo 2 and 3. Halo is a good series until you spend 90% of your work making PvP for the game and 10% of the time slapping together a storyline that lasts for 3 hours. If they had made full versions of 2 and 3 and in between made a large scale online PvP only game things would have been fine but to scale down the real reason for the game so pants on the head retarded people can sit around shooting each other all day and night is just selling out and not good game making.

Fugitive Hunter: War on Terror

Anyone who purchased, developed, or supported this blatant US government-commissioned propaganda piece in any way is worthy of sterilization and death.

Just remembered: Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories. Irritating combat system and very little that wasn't in the original game. The actual sequel was a definite improvement, though still with a bunch of issues.

Soul Calibur IV.

Take a fantastic fighting game with tons of variety and an incredibly deep system and then remove all the fun, extra game modes and put in unnessecary and ridiculously unbalanced Star Wars characters (fuckin' Yoda. The bastard's too short to grab.) and you have the fourth SC game.
