Motion sickness with Portal?

It was actually kind of funny when my brother and I tried to get our mom to play Halo: Reach (bad idea, I know). She spent the first 5 minutes running into walls, and the next ten spinning around in circles shooting the sky. Then she put the controller down, said she had motion sickness, and hasn't played since. The same thing happened when she played Portal.

I don't get motion sick unless I can feel my body in motion. So sitting stationary while playing a video game, weather it has motion blur or not, would not make me sick.

Maybe its just me but I feel nauseated after playing this for more than 10 minutes or so. The same goes for Half Life 2.
Go into the options and set the field of view to the highest number possible (90 I think). If that's still not working, look up how to change it manually in the config files to something higher.

I've had the same problem, but 90 degrees worked fine for me. For some reason the Source engine uses a different FOV to most other games. Seems to have gone in Portal 2 though.
I bumped to 90 degrees the minute it ran, its a thing with me.
For now I've been playing in sessions, a few levels and after the nausea starts kicking in strong I'll call it a day and play another session tomorrow. After the nausea kicks in, the feeling stays for a while too. Resting and food helps.

Like I said, you can manually widen it in the config files quite easily - I know some people bump it up to 105 degrees.

If you feel it coming on (and the even wider FOV doesn't help) then just take a 5 minute break instead of waiting for it to get really bad.

Alright I'll look into the extra FOV fix, is there any shortcomings to it? Like stretching the game too much?

I get frequent motion sickness, from things like roller coasters and long drives, but never with games. Dunno why, but I can sit and play Portal for hours at a time, beat the story mode once or twice and try some challenges (which I am absolutely piss at) before getting bored... never getting sick. Silly me, I never actually thought anyone experienced the claims on the warning screen.

EDIT:

Maybe I have the same thing. Judging by my given examples, I'd have to say yes.

I don't believe so.

...just me?...
You're not alone. I can't play FPS games for long periods of time without feeling nauseated. I don't even wanna know what either Portal game would do to me.

Portal gives me a bit of a headache, but it's not nearly as bad as the one I get from Minecraft. Nevertheless, a productive session of Minecraft is worth a headache.
