Alright my fellow Escapee's I need some advice.

I have several projects on the go, writing, games, and so on and so forth. My problem is I come up with all these great ideas (great in my mind anyway), I'm all gun-ho about starting, and then.....nothing. I cannot get my self motivated to keep going. As a result my computer is filled with all sorts of unfinished projects.

So I put this question to you, how do you keep your self motivated in similar situations.

Hmm...hard to say since when I start something I make damn sure I finish it. Maybe it's my culture but whenever I start making say an avatar, I usually put[sub]more important[/sub]other things aside to do it. When I want to learn a piece on the piano, I have to force myself to get off otherwise I'll keep playing it until my parents force me to get off.

Maybe you should only do what you're really passionate about. Sorry, I'm sure someone else has some tips about motivation. Maybe visualize the end product?

EDIT: Convincing yourself that it's 'worth it' works too.

I'm sorry but I'm kind of the same way with my artistic endeavors :/

At present? 4 unfinished novel-ish projects that are unfinished...

I make myself depressed so I FORCE myself

see Ive got this (really bad) story thats been hanging around on my computer since 09, recently Ive decided to revamp it and finish it (then get somone to read it)

reason is somtimes I cant be bothered, I get distracted, then I think "whats the point in this? I suck and It's never going to go anywhere"

but then I think to myself

"so what? my job isnt challenging, I have no passion for it...creative endevours are the most productive thing I can do right now , all I can do is get better"

so even though Im not "in the zone" I keep going, I keep wrting (and the Ideas still come) because then its easyer to go back and turn it into somthing acceptible

Imagine yourself and your ancestors, dozens of years from now, hard-eyed and fabulously mustached, looking at the present you with disapproval and disdain. Live up to his/her standards. Don't disappoint.

I am the exact same way. For me personally I can work on something best when I am working on other things as well. Like I might do 1-2 pages of a comic I've been working on, then work on a drawing for a friend, then work on something else etc. I found if I'm constantly changing it up I can keep a steady pace with all my different projects instead of getting tired of them. It also helps with creativity, too.

The trick is to set your self small and achievable goals.
Each time you achieve your goal, you reward your self, and if you do not, you punish yourself.

For instance I work out every day. I have a calendar in my room that I put an X through each day that I have worked out. If I don't work out that day, I don't put an X in it.

If I want to go out to a club or whatever, I check my calendar, if in the last 7 days I haven't worked out 4 times, then I have to drive and thus not drink. Bummer. If I have worked out 4 or more times in the last 7 days, then I can go and drink. Fun!

After a while, you can look back and see a calendar full of X's and feel accomplished. Find a way to apply a similar method to your work perhaps?

Procrastination. Used properly, one can move from one project to the next and the next by holding off on one in an "I'll do it later" sense and just moving to whatever perks your fancy at the time. This was how I got through college.

Focus on one day at a time, or you'll be overwhelmed. Create a place where you can focus undisrupted, and add in recesses when needed to remedy boredom and your thoughts, flowing to otherworldly places, refusing you to focus. This is vitally important.

What I did when I wrote my novel was to set a goal of 1-2 pages written a day, in A4 format. It's a lot of text, but it got easier to the point I feel I could probably take on 2-3 pages a day if I were to continue on a second novel. Which I just might, seeing as I'll most likely be unemployed for two years time after finishing school.

Imagine how you'd feel if in ten years' time you hadn't achieved in pushing one of those projects of yours. How sad and empty you'd feel looking at your unfulfilled dreams of times past.
Ok?
Now take that exact feeling but change the timescale to one year, rather than ten. After all, it's the feeling that's important.
Ok?
Now using the same logic, change a year to a month.
Ok?
Now change a month to a week.
Ok?
Now change a week to a day.
...
Congratulations! You are now motivated.

Honestly, I'm only motivated when I enjoy something. Making a game or doing an acting job or animating, all of this are things I enjoy. I would be motivated to do all of this, no matter how difficult it would be or how long it would take.

For things I don't like, it really depends. There's a difference between making the game I want to make and doing the course work I don't want to do but have to.
