Motivation.

You know, I almost never finish a game. It's not that games are too hard or anything; I just lose interest or can't figure out where to go.

But, for some odd reason, I can't be arsed to finish this one game when I'm right at the end. I do, usually, but for some reason, I can't pick up Persona 3 Portable and finish it. I just have one Tartarus boss and then the final gauntlet to go. But for some reason I'm just... Too lazy to finish it. The PSP--and the only four games I ever play on it, P3P included--is right next to me, too.

So, fellow escapists, two questions. One, can you give me some form of motivation when I've already figured out the ending is going to be, "You beat the unbeatable and fought the powah?" Second question is, have you ever had one of those things where you just can't be bothered to pick it up and finish it?

I usually end up coming back far (as in, several months to a year) and thinking, "Hey, I never finished that. I should do that." And then I do.

In this internet era, you can either get a walkthrough (to finish the game) or watch a youtube playthrough and just watch the 'entire' game (or what remains). There is literally no 'punishment' now if you dont finish a game since you can easily youtube credits, movies, endings, etc.

So if the actual 'gaming experience' of going through it yourself isn't that great to you, then just watch someone else play it and skip the 'yawn'/boring parts.

I really enjoyed Persona 3 and persona 4. I finished persona 4 myself (plus extras) but for Persona 3, i got to the last month... and then just didn't feel like it. Watched the rest on youtube.

Due to lack of time and lack of interest in actual 'gameplay' I've started watching full playthrough of games I can't or wouldn't ever get. Heavy Rain, etc.

I have a solution for you OP: only buy the best of the best. That's as in, maybe 5 games a year. Not only does that make every game you play a special experience that's kind of like rationed biscuits, but it also means that it'll be well enough designed to motivate you through to the end, and then over again. If that doesn't work, give up and just sign yourself up for a sports team, or watch cartoons on tv.

Something that I can't be bothered to finish? The dishes. My 40k Imperial Guard army does that to me too. I was oh-so angry when I forced myself to repaint 200+ men and 5 tanks, and I still haven't finished.

Music ADD, looks like there are a lot of us that suffer from that!
And yea this is pretty much what I do. I just get about 3-5 games a year now, seems to help me out a lot in finishing them. Before, I wold buy twice that number of games a year, and just never finish any of them.

If I know I'm close to the end then that's usually enough inspiration but I have definitely seen my share of games that I just couldn't play for some reason. A lot of times I'll get a few hours into a game and just never have the will to sit down and play it again. A few examples that come to mind are Mass Effect (I love BioWare and the combat was pretty fun but I'm not really into sci-fi so I can't get into the story/atmosphere), Prototype and Half Minute Hero. They're not bad games but.. idk, I can't get into them.

Ho ho, I jest! But seriously, I get the same thing with a lot of games. Usually RPGs, but it's happened to me with other games as well.

I've actually watched full playthroughs of games and then gotten the games. Damn you, Tales of the Abyss! And... Well, I dunno why, but I really want to finish P3P. It's just something nagging at the back of my mind that I should actually finish a game once in a while.

Problem with buying the "best of the best" is that the vast majority of super kick ass games just... Don't appeal to me. Heck, I'd spend thirty bucks on the Orange Box, but FPSs and puzzle games... Not my thing. At all. And since the vast majority of super-ultra-kick ass-mega games now and days are just mainstream FPSs, I'm forced to go back and buy localized Japanland games, typically well over a year old. Maybe my life'd be easier if I learned Japanese, since Bamco is completely unreliable. I want my Tales of Graces, dammit.

Problem with buying the "best of the best" is that the vast majority of super kick ass games just... Don't appeal to me. Heck, I'd spend thirty bucks on the Orange Box, but FPSs and puzzle games... Not my thing. At all. And since the vast majority of super-ultra-kick ass-mega games now and days are just mainstream FPSs, I'm forced to go back and buy localized Japanland games, typically well over a year old. Maybe my life'd be easier if I learned Japanese, since Bamco is completely unreliable. I want my Tales of Graces, dammit.

Well then look for what you want. Don't force yourself to get a game you know won't grip you, lest of all because there are no better options. Whether it's a triple A non FPS-puzzle game that you'd like such as (I'm just grasping at straws here,) God of War, Assassin's Creed or GTA4, or smaller indie games that maintain a nice charm, there is undoubtedly something out there for you.

If you're just looking for games with plot twists or deeper narratives, those are a bit easier to come by. Red Dead Redemption and GTA4, Silent Hill, Mass Effect, the list is quite long. Don't go around playing the same old rehashed shit over and over again if it doesn't speak to you.

So yeah, moral of the story is to not choose mediocre. I don't get what everyone's doing buying into mediocre movies, video games and TV shows. These things should be fine works that you enjoy, not as a massive time sink. If you're bored and just want to do something, join a sports team, hang out with friends or do some volunteer work. You should get what really tickles your fancy when it comes to these kind of things. If leaning Japanese is what it takes to accomplish that, then I say go ahead. I ended up learning 4 new languages to be at home in some of my preferred mediums.

Characters motivate me. Explains why through yells f frustration I beat Assassin's Creed and GAT4.

1) It's all about the challenge to me, if it isn't much of a challenge then I'm going to get bored very quick. It helps a lot when the game gives you many different types of challenges to keep it interest like OoT. However, I find most game to be like Titans Quest, same shit over and over.

2) Shit loads of games, even popular games. Twilight Princess, I didn't find interesting and dropped it after the desert temple. Titan Quest, I'm just killing shit loads of mobs the same way, all the way. World of Warcraft, wasn't very challenging.

Well it's Japanese so if you break it up then it'd be tsu-n-de-re.

I guess when I know the ending, and I know that with enough tries I can beat the game, I just lose all motivation to do so. I guess I have to be really bored to think, "Hey, I haven't finished that yet. May as well do it now." If you're looking for a feeling of accomplishment for having completed it, don't let yourself feel that until after you've finished the game. Or just gather up the willpower to pick it up and spend half an hour on it. Tell yourself that you have x amount of minutes, you have nothing else to do, the game is not going to finish itself, so you'll finish it.
