MotorStorm is a racing game developed by Evolution Studios and published by SCE for the PlayStation 3. MotorStorm was a launch title for the PS3 with Ridge Racer 7 and Resistance: Fall of Man and was bundled with the 60GB model.
The events of the game take place at the fictional MotorStorm Festival in Monument Valley. The objective of the game is to win a series of off-road races and to be the overall winner of the Festival.
Gameplay revolves around choosing the correct line to run o the track. Tracks have certain lines of terrain that cater to a certain vehicle types. Big rigs and truck drive best in mud which tends to be at the lowest elevation on the track. ATVs and motorcycles drive best on rock which tends to be at the highest elevation.
The controls are a little loose at first, but within a few minutes you?ll get the hang of them. You have the typical gas, brake, e-brake, boost button set-up. But let me say this, the brake is useless. The only vehicles I can tell it works on is big rigs and some bikes. If you want to drift through a turn your best off using the e-brake or boost. Boost is exactly what you think it is, just hold X and go. But holding boost for too long will result in the engine overheating and exploding. The game also has a feature that allows you to use the sixaxis motion control to steer the vehicles. Needless to say, it's useless.
There are eight levels in the game, with four you can download off the PS store. The events in the races occur in real-time, such as the mud effects (which is cool for about five minutes before it gets annoying), tire marks, crashes, etc. Say you crash you vehicle into a rock or something and pieces fall off. Those pieces will be left where they are for the rest of the race. Tracks experience real-time deformation, which means each lap is different from the last. Larger vehicles can create holes or rut that will disturb the lines of lighter vehicles. Each track is filled with jumps, bumps, cliffs, ledges, mud pits, and anything else the desert can throw at you. Races are generally three-lap events with two to fifteen racers. Races are resented on tickets which have one to four races. Difficulty is decided by the level of the ticket, one to three.
MotorStorm uses the Havok engine, or at least that?s what the title screens say cause there?s no logo on the box. So if you suck at geometry you?ll be pulling your hair out. I can?t tell you how many times I?ve gone off a jump and landed on a bump which sent me up in an opposite direction. And I assume if it uses the Havok engine then it would explain the retarded crash physics. Cause I?m pretty sure that going head first into a rock wall doesn?t results in being launched skyward but it could just be the nitrous tanks exploding.
And that sort of brings me to the AI. Now, the Ai was one of the most criticizes aspects of this game and it?s not undeserving of it. AIT drives will intentionally try to knock you off the course into rocks and other obstacles. Naturally, it gets more frustrating as you progress through the tickets. I personally think the Ai drivers intentionally crash themselves just to block the line you?re on. There have been countless times the wreck of the driver in front of me has been lodged on my hood and I?ve had to back u and go around just to lose positions in the race.
The soundtrack is full of faux techno and a few modern rock tracks which ultimately means you?ll not be enjoying the game. It?s sort of like Burnout in that the fun gameplay is slightly ruined by the shitty music that makes up the soundtrack. But unlike Paradise you can?t make a custom soundtrack.
Final Judgment: Rent it if you don?t already have it.
