Move a 40GB PS3 HDD to a 12GB Slim model?

I was looking advice on a busted PS3 thats older than old

And after some looking, Ive decided to replace the system. Now I can get a 12GB slim model, and was told that I can move my old system's hard drive across. But I just saw that it will erase and reset the hard drive when its been moved.

So is it true? Will I need a 3rd HDD to back up my save data and stuff? Any advice will help, many thanks! (If theres something reigon specific then I'm in the UK...If thats at all relevant)

The good news is you can copy game saves directly onto a thumb drive or any external hard drive formatted to FAT32. Remember, you can format up to 32GB size drives to FAT32 using the default Windows format tool, and if you wanted to go bigger, there's FAT32Format [http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm]. There's no fast way to copy game saves to an external, they have to be done one at a time.

In addition, be sure to connect to PSN and back up your trophies. Do a final check for anything you think you'll miss once you're on the new system. You can move your current hard drive to the new PS3, and it will immediately start to format the HDD if all goes well. If not, you probably need to do a firmware update, which is also described in that link above.

I'm getting an over whelming sense of "Fuck"...

So some of the data may not transfer, and I'll loose all data for PSN titles. Urgh, I'm so not understanding half of this.

Ah no, it'll be fine. You can back up your game saves using the Saved Data Utility. And any digital titles can just be downloaded again once you log into your PSN profile on the new PS3.

What I meant by "forget the PS3 backup" was you don't have to back up the entire drive, you could just copy your game saves manually. It'll be a lot faster for you.
