Movie Games

It seems that nearly every movie released in the last few years has had a game released in accordance, and while the movies may be hit-and-miss, the games have generally been crap. MY question is why? We have the technology to make at least decent games for anything, yet studios are content with their game being the latest shovel-ware as long as it sells on opening week like crazy. Two such examples are CARS and IRON MAN. I didn't play CARS but watched my nephew play it and get bored with it two minutes later, proving it to be a knee-jerk puchase. Iron Man (for PS2 mind you) was ok AT FIRST, but quickly began to rust over any affectionwhen a giant hover tank came out from under the desert sand. Again not mine and again a knee-jerk buy.

So I ask ye of the Escapist forums two questions;

1. Does anyone see movie games improving in the near future?

2. Can the ignorant public who buy anything to please their bratty kids be taught otherwise?

P.S. Search engine didn't provide anything of this nature for the last few months. This does NOT include games like Ghostbusters, only to movie-game co-releases.

No and No.

#1: It generally isn't gamers who buy movie games the people who do don't see anything wrong with them and they still make money, so basically there is absolutely no incentive to improve them.

#2: the ignorant public will always be ignorant because it is both convinient and pleasing and if they are buying games for their 'bratty kids' then they probably have money to burn.

I don't know about the future, but very few movie games have ever been done well, even in the past.

With the obvious exception being the uber game, Goldeneye.

You forgot Aliens vs. Predator 2.

Actually, everyone's gonna do that, so me calling you out on that is a bit unfair.

Seriously, though, that game is win.

Goldeneye, Batman Begins, and Spiderman 1&2 were not bad.

They're not getting better anytime in the future because for the most part they're low budget cash cows for EA (and it is always EA).

Also, movies based on games are generally worse than the games based on movies. And games based on movies based on games are just odd.

1) No improvement is in sight because this type of tactic was done back in the days of the NES an SNES and even then they sucked balls because all the games were were just cheap cash-ins existing merely to promote the movie they depicted.

2) Because parents buy the movie games merely because they associate good movie= good game based on movie.

Until game makers decide to actually try and make a decent movie game none of them will ever be successful. The only one that works is GoldenEye 007 and we all know about that.

I would agree but I've never played AVP2. I've heard great things though!

the only one I am looking foward to is Tron Evolution: the game. I know that the movie is called Tron Legacy, but the game title is different for some reason. Any ways, I am just looking foward to play in the light cycle. I can see me being entertained for weeks with only that.

Only star wars games are okay in my opinion.
Yeah, but hardly any of those are based on the films.

OT: No to both - the sooner we stop acknowledging their existence the better.

The problem, I think, is that most movie tie-in games are extremely rushed. They don't take the time to really think about who their target audience is, what their expectations are, what style their audience desires, and so forth.

There ARE good movie tie-in games and they're good because they DO pay attention to the desires of their audience. Look at "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen"; say what you will about the movie, at least the game makers knew what the audience wanted... intuitive and enjoyable combat between giant robots. Deliver that they did.

but golden eye [movie] was crap, yet the game did well. Strange.
Funny how that works isn't it?
