Movies you loved...but grew to dislike.

Every non-Pixar Disney movie, with the exception of Pinocchio.

When it comes to terrifying children, Pinocchio has no equal. That's why I appreciate it now, now that I am adult enough to only weep urine than lose full control.

A lot of Disney movies had those scenes. Ugh, I remember one (I think it was disney) with some sort of undead army that literally had me in tears. Oh and a lot of Dumbo was *dark* as hell.

Funny enough most of them are still very decent for me except my childhood favorite: A Goofy Movie. Loved it as a kid, makes me depressed as hell as an adult.

That would be "The Magic cauldron".
Scared the hell out of me as a kid, but now i wonder why.
If i look at it now, i find it has decent animations and good voice acting, But the story is so generic its painful.

But most of the old Disney films hold up just fine, i personally like the Pixar stuff less.

Actually it's originally called The Black Cauldron, though imdb shows it having an alternate title of "Taran and the Magic Cauldron". The book it's based on is called The Black Cauldron though. Good children's book series, and a pretty good movie IMO.

I'm not familiar with the book though, But i feel they go a bit fast through the stages of the story.
It feels like the story could have worked a bit better if it had 90+ minutes instead of 80 min.
(but with 25 hand drawn/colored cell's per second i get why they didn't)

Eh, given it had an alternate title it very well could be that you saw it labeled as Taran and the Magic Cauldron xD. And yeah, the story was pretty quickly told. I remember that movie as one of my first experiences of a movie adaptation of a book series that I had read, and while I enjoyed it a lot, it didn't stick to the book very much. Not a surprise as most don't, other than the most broadest of strokes. The ending though choked me up. Munchings and crunchings! xD

A pretty recent film but the Dark Knight Rises was a film I really liked when I watched it at the time but quickly started to dislike it more and more every time I thought about it.

I agree with this. I still really like Tom Hardy's Bane and wish he was in a better movie, though.

The first two movies of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy (never saw the third). At first I genuinely liked them and thought that they were good movies but when I rewatched them about a year or two ago I just found them absolutely intolerable. Specifically Peter Parker and MJ, the constant whining and "emoing" from both characters often made me roll my eyes and fast forward through the Peter Parker segments quite a bit.

It's odd because I'm usually someone who defends "emo" characters when I feel they have a good reason to be acting that way.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Upon re-watching it, I honestly don't understand why I thought it was a good movie in the first place. It may very well have been the silly video game-like aspects of the movie (pretty much just random graphics for puns/throwaway jokes and then the fact that all of the evil exes explode into coins if you haven't seen it), but looking back the whole thing is just... not very good. At all. There's some good jokes in there, but they're too scattered to call the movie funny. And thinking about the acting is making me feel about as asleep as they must have been when they filmed it, because there was no energy in most of the main cast. The villains seemed to have absorbed it all, but they each die almost immediately upon being introduced.

When I first saw it, it immediately became my favorite movie of all time, mostly because I'd never gotten that kind of experience from a movie before: it felt like it was made exactly for me. But upon rewatching it on DVD without the booming sound and the power of the big screen the flaws started to show. It's not, in the end, all that funny, the acting is for the most part dull, and Jesus Holy donkeybuggering Christ Michael Cera might just be the ultimate singularity of annoyance. The fight scenes are mostly fine and it has some nice points about relationships, but in the end it just didn't stand rewatching.

[b/]V for Vendetta:[/b] I don't *hate* this movie but it was THE MOST AWSOME THING EVER...to 15 year old me, older me read the comic and while I can appreciate the good parts of the movie Comic is better in certain ways (though MUCH darker)

I was going to choose this, I'm a BIG alan Moore fan, so when this came out I enjoyed it, with a little dislike of the ending.

Over time ( and repeated watchings) I found that it grated. The happy ending belays the point, they mess up Evey's journey no end, and they use homosexuality over and over again ( once mentioning religion - oh hang on that was done by a famous gay man? ), like some easy to use sledgehammer to hammer home the point.

I actually don't mind as a movie...even its deviations from the source material (I'm not a fan of dark) I just think it stripped out all the nuance and simplified it so again, easy to see why to a 15 year old it was the most amazing deep dark thing ever....

There's a special case to be made with the 1998 Godzilla as I haven't rewatched the flick in about a decade now (and never will, since everyone is of the opinion it sucks).

Not true, I liked Godzilla 98. Better than some of the actual Godzilla movies that have come out since.
Now I have the same experience with The Phantom Menace. Loved it when I saw it in theaters. I will never watch it again.

I'd bet you're thinking of The Black Cauldron arguably the darkest Disney movie. If I remember correctly its the first Disney animation to be rated PG because of its tone and content. It definitely didn't fit the general scheme of Disney movies, before or since. Overall I liked the movie but I also had read the series of books that it was based off of so it was more familiar to me. Still it didn't feel like a Disney flick.

OT: I am not sure of movies I used to like that I don't anymore... I've a few movies I've seen so many times I won't watch them anymore but I don't dislike them, just bored watching them over.
However if you were to ask what TV shows I loved as a kid and now wonder what the hell I was thinking, I can give you a plain and simple answer:
Thundercats. Holy crap I feel like an idiot for even remotely enjoying this show, can't even chalk it up to being a dumb kid. Although the outtakes from the voice acting sessions are hilarious... "What the fuck is a samophlange?" - Panthro

The fact that people make this complaint is the main thing that cements in my mind that the newest one is, in fact, a perfectly legitimate Godzilla movie. People that don't really understand how horror movies are supposed to be structured have been whining about that for every film since king of the monsters itself. Hell, people made that complaint about King Kong, too.

You would have something of a point had this been a horror film with Godzilla as the antagonist. He's not, however. The two nameless MUTO thingies are the primary antagonists and they get plenty of screen time. You'd also need a proper protagonist. Yet, the best the movie can offer is a boring Navy EOD guy who is nothing more than an incidental character.

The Great Gatsby. Ive never read the novel mind you, some people tell me I should so I might get around to it.. The first time I watched it I was wowed by the visuals and the awesome soundtrack and the romance made me go 'awww'

but then I started to think about it, and think about the characters, Gatsbys pretty horrible from my point of view after some thought. Gatsby basically spends the whole time trying to manipulate Daisy, like he doesnt give a shit what she wants, Its all about HIS plan for her done HIS way. The way he talks about 'making her understand' rubs me the wrong way and he claims he built this whole thing just for her, then refuses when she offers to just run away with him. I dont think it was ever about her, I think it was just about having the perfect life for Gatsby, He wanted the money, the power and the woman. She was just his trophy.

...um, ok? Nobody actually denied this fact about movies having pros and cons. We were simply discussing movies that changed for you over time. My thread was about movies that you hated (or just disliked) at first, but over time became something you truly enjoy. This thread is about the opposite situation.

Neither of those subjects in any way negates the fact that movies will have pros and cons.


I do love how many people are listing V for Vendetta xD. As that's the movie that inspired me to make the original post about movies you hate then love. Fun to see how different things reflect different people.

I can't think of any movies that I loved, and now hate, or strongly dislike. I've tried for several days, and I just really can't think of one. I think the closest is probably the Star Trek reboot in 2009. I loved it when it came out, but I've kind of soured on it a bit. But, to be fair, I think part of that is that I saw it like 5 times in the theater with different groups of friends, so maybe I just had an overload. I remember thinking the plot had some glaring holes in it, even when it was new, but I didn't mind too much. It just didn't have the gravitas that the trailer had. Of course, One Step From Hell goes a long way to making anything awesome. xD

Finally had a chance to re-watch them all recently, and... well, let's just say I'm underwhelmed. (Two exceptions: Casino Royale is... passable, I suppose, and I never liked Quantum of Solace to begin with.)

There was a time where I was praising this movie for, at least, being a good adaptation to the first book/season in the Avatar animated series... The fuck was I thinking?!

Still enjoy the first movie and the third movie I'm still indifferent about overall... But outside of one song that still stuck in my head, it was a very disappointing sequel in comparison to the other movies...

I can't think of any others right now... I think I might still be nostalgia blind or something...
