I want to (again) mirror Aris Khandrs sentiment here, it was still possible (If annoying) to continue the off-topic community in off topic due to its size and activity being comparable to Gamergate Community on the Escapist.

The RnP just cannot compete.

It doesn't belong in R&P, but it doesn't really in OT either. OT, in theory, should be for (and I'm quoting the Forums page here)"Music, movies and drink recipes - non-game talk." And GamerGate doesn't quite fit the bill of "non-game talk". It's still basically connected to the games industry.

So... honestly, under the current system, it's weird trying to figure out where GG should go. Happens whenever we have a game-tangential topic in OT, it's just not really been a serious enough problem until now.

I guess it's because OT has been, and always was, used basically as a 'miscellaneous' section. A place where threads go that don't really fit anywhere else.

And you're right, that system worked reasonably okay, until now.
I guess this GG shitstorm just got a bit too big for our forum structure to handle.
That's what happens when other gaming sites censor discussions =/... They migrate to the places most similiar to the ones they left. The Escapist Forums wasn't constructed to withstand migration from several media sites during a major controversy because something like this hasn't happened before.

And unlike you I don't think they're going to leave. These former users of NeoGaf, Gawker Media sites and such don't have places to go back to. Unless they are banned and all discussion on this issue is banned these new members likely wont be going away.

The Ponyies and Bronies. Mass Effect 3. Anita S. threads. Gamersgate.

And most terrible of all...The Whirlpools! Do you remember the horror of the Whirlpools?

*shudders*

I grok that the Powers That Be don't want to create a precedent for making new sub forums for Topics that surge in and overwhelm OT or the forums in general for months on end.

That's why I've got a suggestion to deal with GG and future conflicts that doesn't involve sacrificing the integrity of preexisting forums or creating individual specific forums for topics that become disruptive to the site in general.

It's a good idea. I think you might like it.

Create a new generic sub forum named: The Basement.

When topics become overwhelming they can be collectively banished to the Escapist's OFFICIAL Basement Forum.

Think about it. Sure it's hare brained---but it might just work! ^_^

They'll either be tempered by the flames of R&P to the point they utilize strong, logical arguments, or they'll be chewed up and spat out so hard they spend the next three months bitching about R&P on the Gamefront thread.
Ah yes, that thread.

It's always interesting to see what they really think about this place, isn't it.
Is this where I post one of those angry cat "GOOD" pictures? Or where a "victory" for the "movement" is proclaimed? (Yes it's premature, that's the point.)

N'aww, claims of curtailed freedom of speech and prejudiced modding, that's cute.

I would like to point out that on several occasions several outright inflammatory comments from a lot of anti-GG individuals took a lot of time to get moderated while several completely off topic and derailing conversations inside the GG thread by certain individuals were left completely untouched.

In contrast pro-GG posters have been hammered down almost instantly and on several occasions for stuff that other posters were left untouched.

But I still like The Escapist. :(

I don't know what's up with some people believing moderation has been more strict on GG supporters. It hasn't been the case, especially since any dissenting voices abandoned any notion of going to the megathread.

That said, I'm not sure how nice it is to go to another forum and thread where this discussion is being held and pick out posts unhappy with The Escapist to display to the entire community here. I'm of a mind it could potentially incite unnecessary conflict towards these members. Some might say they deserve it, but I haven't reached that point.

Maybe I'm just too kind. Or as a light supporter I'm just biased or something.

Yeah, I don't really understand all the complaints about biased GamerGate-related moderating. I've personally given out punishments to various people on BOTH sides.

But, anyway. Yeah.
I'm afraid his comments remain accurate to someone who's watched this since the beginning.

Moderation on the escapist forums is one reason why I never bothered to make an account until this mess happened yet I've been using this site for years.

It could be just the way the mod flag queue was working at the time. It could be that those posts escaping moderation weren't actually breaking the rules, despite what you may think. It could be you have a biased outlook on these things, despite everyone's best attempts to keep opinions out of everything. It could be the mods are totally out for you and just looking for an excuse to slake their bloodlust by sating their itchy banhammer-fingers.

Whatever the possible explanation, citation needed. Or better yet: contact the staff.

If Escapist's moderation is inconsistent, it's nothing to do with GamerGate. It's been like that for a long while. As long as I've been a member, probably longer.

It's not unique to GamerGate.

I would just like to suggest the following modifications to the discussion parts of the forum, for consideration.

Video Games-Talk of video games
Other games-yes sports too
Other media-Books, Comic Books, Movies, T.V., Web Based Content-non game
Media Studies-Aspects relating to media in society
Escapist Community-User group announcements, Forum Fun (forum games)
Role Play-Forum role play
User Reviews-Reviews from the community
Religion and Politics-Debate on religious and political ideals and events
Advice Forum-Related to giving advice of any topic
Other News-Pertaining to news topics not otherwise covered

In hope that the modifications can be of use to the Escapist staff.

I was reviewing my previous posts and came across one I made above.

I mistakenly quoted you rather than someone else from an entirely different thread and thus "responded" in a thoroughly inaccurate manner that must have correctly been received as being as innacurate as it was dreadfully discourteous in tone.

I am sincerely and humbly sorry for my terrible mistake. I hope that you will forgive me for my discourtesy.

I'm sorry. -_-

Edit: This groveling comes to you with zero outside influence. I realized I messed up and was foul and rude (though not too badly to get whacked with a Warning) and want to make amends. I was wrong. I apologize for my Targeting Computer being off. :(
