I've always wanted one of the Creative Zen ones, that are like the size od a credit card, with a nice screen and stuff.

I wouldn't reccomend iPod, because the sound quality isn't at all as good as many others.
I got a zen moazic and it works extremely well

Interesting, I've heard suggestions, but no questions. A frame of reference is important.

How much music do you plan on carrying with you?
About how much are you willing to spend on your player?

Actually, I've found the replies pretty helpful. And like I originally said, I'm just looking for one with a few gigs. 4 to 8 range usually goes from $100 to $150.

Right now I'm looking at either a Zune or Walkman. Would be great if anyone can confirm which has the better sound quality.

I have a 4gig Zune, and I enjoy using it very much.

Though, I don't have much of a comparison, it's my first real MP3 player. Only thing I'm really sure is that the headset it comes with sucks, blows, and possibly drips. Trade it out for a better one as soon as you can, if you buy one of course.

From a purely scientific standpoint, the answer is here. http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-11297_7-6510133-2.html

The signal to noise ratio is the determination of the quality of actual sent signal to background noise. The measurement is in decibels or dB. The absolute possible peak ratio would be listed as 100dB.

There's no telling exactly how old this is though. They speak of the iPod 5gb as new.

The test isn't hard to do if you have the right equipment, which I'm guessing most people don't because it's very expensive.

I already have a set of awesome sony street headphones that I use to listen to pretty much everything. I think they're out of production too, cause I couldn't find them in-store anywhere, last time I checked. High quality sound and durable as hell.

I'm loving my Sansa. It's got decent battery life and a very ergonomic interface.

Most importantly: you don't need to dick with iTunes to use it.

Well it's pretty much a given that Creative would come out on top, but I'm looking to try a different brand this time around.

Well, can't say I didn't offer. I use my PSP as my MP3 player, so I can't really help you.

I have a Creative MuVo. Prtty user friendly, but a bit beginnerish. It only has 1 gig, so you aren;t going to get many songsw. I do reccomend any Creative product though.

That's what I have for my workout/running MP3 player. It's awesome, and the battery lasts for like 25 hours, or something rediculous. A little different to navigate, but it's 4GB. I haven't really messed around with making playlists on it, but you can. It's also drag-n-drop, sounds great, and is under $100. I think you can get them from Best Buy for about 50 ish.

My roomate has a 120GB zune, and it's really nice, in my opinion. The sound is way better than anything iTunes and the iPod dish out. I have a Mac and an iPod, so you can't say that I'm hating on apple. iPod used to be the better player, but now Zune/Creative players, have the quality. Only thing I can give Apple here, is that my iPod will not break. It has dents in the metal backing, and still runs with no problems.

Not gonna lie, although the iPod touch is expensive, it's really a good MP3 player. I can't use one becuase I need my 160 GB iPod.
No. No it's not.
The battery life is atrocious, and I know, because I owned it.
Plus, aside from being much bigger, and having many other purposes (video, pictures, internet, which decrease battery life), it's audio isn't any better than the other iPods, which atleast have a decent battery life.

...anything except an iPod...

...and now for something a little more constructive. I personally have a Creative Zen Stone 2GB. Holds more than enough songs, is small, pretty cheap (well, cheaper than the equivalent iPod anyway) and doesn't require specific software to add songs (like say iTunes).
Exactly (with reference to the iPod comments).
The worst thing about iPod's is iTunes. It is a horrible program that took up far too much of my system resources. So I got rid of it and now I use Winamp. Can't do as much as iTunes but what it does do, it does better. There are other iTunes programs out there that are quite good if you can find them.

I have a iPod Shuffle and I am thinking of getting a new mp3 player but I will definatly NOT be getting an iPod.

I'm looking to buy a new mp3 player with just a few gigs of memory. I could go around reading website reviews, but I'm wondering if there's any general consensus on what the best brand/model currently is. For those wondering, the last one I had was a zen micro.
i have a Zune and i love it. if you have a PC get one. if you have a Mac, well your options just went to one.

I don't have branded mp3s. To me, if I can hear music at a decent volume, it's good enough for me.If it has radio, even better. Try buying a cheap one off of ebay. They may not be with big brand names, but they're cheap and last, except for the default headphones (gah!). I'd reccomend something that looks like an iPod as the buttons are okay, and you don't have issues with them, from what I've seen.

And there is a reason why people say "my iPod" instead of "my mp3 player" to the iPods, while the other mp3 players out there is more or less always refered to as "my mp3 player", apart from the "walkmans".

Or, you could get a DSi and save your songs from the internet and CDs in .mp4 format (there are a few programs out there like the new Nero that can even convert .mp3 and CDs to .mp4) on a normal (and these days, cheap) SD card. Stick the SD card in the DSi click on the parrot icon for the music player in the main menu and you are off and running. That way, you can play games on the go and listen to music with one device. I've had my DSi since launch and have had good luck with playing .mp4 music files on it. It sounds pretty good with the speakers but even better with good quality headphones plugged in. You can also mess around with the pitch and speed of the songs, add audio filters (the one that makes it sound like an old-time radio works the best, though the one that makes it sound like an 8 bit video game works good on songs with lots of brass instruments in it. You can also play along with the songs by changing what sounds the shoulder buttons make and tapping them in time with the music. You can also record your own sounds with the microphone and play them back over the top of stuff on your SD card. More interactive than your typical mp3 player. It can still play songs while the lid is closed too if you want to stick it in your backpack or something with the earphone wire coming out like some people do with their ipods.
