For those of you who don't still live in the primitive age of CD players like I do. I've decided I want an MP3 player. What do you suggest I buy? My price range is <$200. Don't care if it plays videos or connects to the internet etc... I just want to listen to music.

Can't really go wrong with an iPod unless you have a personal vendetta against the company. How big is your collection?

About 6gb. I dislike Apple and really don't want to have to download iTunes. So I'm not sure about an iPod. >_>

Though I still would buy one...maybe...

iTunes is a pile of shit, I know. Haven't updated my iPod in months because I hate the program so much.

Try a Zune of a Zen then. Just make sure you fiddle around with it and find it to your liking first.

Get a creative. I have a zune, and had a creative. The Creative is the best I've seen, and some of the cheapest.

I love my Zune. The software is way more clean than itunes. Plus it looks really cool to. Also very easy to use. The zune it self is pretty neat. The way you scroll through songs and stuff on the device is very sleek. The social feature is sweet. People with a zune nearby can send you a song that you can listen to 3 times for free to see if you like it. And like the new ipods a new feature where you can buy the song that just played on the radio is incorperated. Also 2 side notes.
1. All zunes come with 2 free games to put on them. Hexic(really cool puzzle game) and A poker game. Cant beat the price of free.
2. Every week zune gives out 3 free songs drm free. You dont get to choose them but hey they are free and you dont have to download them. Usually its an R&B song, Pop song, And alternative song. Hope this helped.
Lastly the fact that you can sync and buy songs over a wireless network is a huge plus for me.

I personally use my PSP, but some folks think it's too bulky.

There's a bunch of programs other than iTunes that you can use to sync your iPod. I don't remember the name off the top of my head, but just look around online for them.

The problem with the Zune is that most of its special features, namely the whole "Social" concept, are kind of defeated by the fact that noone bought it when it came out.

I haven't ever used the Zen, but I hear it's pretty good.

All in all, if you just want to play your music, there's a lot of mp3 players out there that don't do a lot extra, and you can pick them up for pretty cheap. If you're looking for special features, stuff's gonna cost a fair bit more.

Go with Sansa. On certain models you can expand the memory with micro SD cards to hold more stuff

I got an Ipod 80 gig. I'm not even sure if they sell Zunes in Canada because I've never actually seen one.

Good battery life, charges quickly, and massive storage space. I won't upgrade until this thing falls apart.

Thanks everyone.
Be careful with Creative Zens. I paid $200+ for mine and it only lasted just under a year. Lots of freezing and hardware rebooting.

If you decide to go with an ipod, stay the hell away from all things second hand. The earlier gens were straight up shit, but the newer ones are actually good and reliable.
At the moment I'm sporting an iriver e100, which is good and does all I want/need but it is a little slow to load up, and for that reason I probably would recomend something creative/ipod or zune over it. Or better yet grab one of the occasional specials of zazz.com, a few weeks ago they had a nice 8gb touchscreen mp3 player for like $50. No name ftw!

I don't know how much music you will buy vs how much music you will convert from your existing collection, but if your usage leans towards the latter, I would stay clear away from iPods.

My wife has to use one for work, which means she is forced to use iTunes. Up to today I don't know a soul who has been able to use that clunker of a software to transfer songs on the first or even fifth try. That, coupled with its proprietary file formats, means you will be stuck using all things Apple: you can't legally transfer files from an iPod to another MP3 player (you'd be defeating their anti-copying measures), you must use iTunes software to do the file transfer (instead of simply dragging and dropping files using your operating system) and you must buy from their store (you are locked into their pricing scheme and limited to what they have to offer - granted, which is a lot, but still).

Whenever possible, I never buy into proprietary formats because I like to leave my options open. Since there are perfectly viable alternatives to the iPod for listening to your music on the go, I'd stay well clear of the iPod. My opinion would change if I could listen to my purchased music on other portable devices or if I weren't forced to use iTunes, but knowing how Apple works, it'll be a cold day in hell if that ever happens.

Alright thanks, I'll go look at models and eventually make my decision.
