I've been gaming for 16 years now, so I probably have a lot of general gaming proficiency by now.
I tend to place at the top of pretty much everything, except games I'm still new at.
I don't think I've hit any ceiling in any game yet.
I always see myself improving no matter the game, if I keep playing.
I just haven't played any one game all that long though.

for me it tends to be all over the place. When i first started playing say..Halo 3, i was barely able to keep my K/D spree in the +'s. But oddlu enough..i play CoD4 for 4 hours after it came out, go to halo 3 with some friends..just about single-handedly won the match..34-2.

it just seems to come in ways though. if i mainly focus on one game, i'll get better at it, but with all the games i'm still interested in that i've yet to beat, i ain't returning to that point anytime soon

except on RTS's and fighting game's..no matter what, i get my ass kicked online..damn button-mashers and korean-quality players..xD

I usually start off below average then work my way up to being above average or very above average, depending on the game, but never actually pro or OMGWTF at a game. I've put in about 12 days into COD4 and about half of that into MW2 and I've noticed that playing those games just seem to come naturally to me now haha.

In all games I play online after playing them for a bit I always end consistantly atleast above average. I do have the odd shite game on CoD 4 or other games but it is very rare for me to finish a CoD game or any game really that I know and have put in more than 40 to finish below overall mid table. Even if my team is shit I still manage to mantain staying above the more than 1/2-2/3 of the people on the server usually but the often enough I will get in the top few.

On games like Guild Wars I can be consistantly adaptable to play all professions competently in average level compition under r500 on Guild Ladder while some I can play to good enough level eg. Hammer War I can Quarter Knock to a 75% accuracy in a GvG and id most enchants by the aura they cast on a player.

I usually get the hang of new games within around 1-3 hours of gameplay. But I only play console games so the controls are never very complicated. As for online? I usually get around 20 kills and 22 deaths in Bad Company 2(My preffered online shooter).

But then you see people who play these games maybe one hour a week pick it up and just annihilate everyone, their 'killer instinct' and reflexes just seem so much more tuned and faster.
I've never seen that, a player's skill -which may be in some part transferable to a new game- is down to how much they play. You talk about 6 hours a week to maintain an average level of skill, that's fine and normal. I think what you don't realise is the thousands of hours that some of the other players put in, even if you consider someone who is an FPS gamer who has spent maybe 10,000 hours in his gaming life playing FPS, of course if he picks up a new fps game for an hour he's going to hand your butt to you, even though he's never played that particular game before.

The only way novices are going to be better than you is if you are particularly inept, which is something that a good solid 1000 hour gaming binge will straighten out of you.

Seriously, to be consistently at the top of FPS score boards you need to spend a minimum of 1000hours on that game at at least 40 hours a week. - at that point you'll be a contender at least.

I'm pretty much stunning at FPS's.

Love the fact that I can jump in at random TDM server on CoD 4 with my trusted MP5 and score around 80/30 but still don't win.
Maybe go for the objectives then instead of getting high K:Ds?

Yeah... I would never spend that long on a game lol. ;;I

I think I have around 5/6 days logged into MW2, don't get me wrong I'm not bad, it's just I'm nowhere near the level of dudes like Hutch, Seanannersrs, Blame Truth etc... I average in the top 5 players in a match but often to horrifically badly too.

Some of the killcams I see in that game are just... insane. Some people's aim and reaction time are just crazy fast.

I'm not the greatest but I do like the think that I'm in the above average factor. Never enough to win consistantly but can give a good fight. Though I'm also one of those people who have on and off days. Somedays I'm unbeatable, the next I'm barely average

I think the problem is that you need different tactics to take on human players. Most of the time, in a multiplayer game someone somewhere will figure out a way to exploit a mechanic, whether it be a glitch or an actual part of the game and this will give them an advantage. Sooner or later this becomes the norm in the game and people who don't do this come at an immediate disadvantage. One example of this bieng the knife in COD games. You can kill an enemy instantly and it's not so hard to get the jump on a player so this has become an overused tactic. If you don't learn to defend against these tactics that don't appear in the single player game then you may end up finding yourself at a disadvantage.

I like to stay away from these tactics, playing the game how I think it should be played. This doesnt necessarily think they should be banned though, I just usually get a thrill knowing I outsmarted a player using my skill and reactions rather than a cheap tactic.

Killing 30 year olds online is part of their muscle memory now, much like trying to be good at Virtua Fighter 5 when its the first beat em up you've played, trying to be good at a shooter well I'm afraid to say your far too late to the party.
To be honest that's kind of a relief... at least I have an excuse for my averageness :) but then how do these little 12 year olds run all over the place getting amazing games?
I think you must be assigning this arbitrary number to these "kids" psychologically to make yourself feel better.

On a serious note and not one that is a flame, sorry buddy I love you really, these kids are bought up on these games so its fully integrated in their lifestyle hence they can totally n00b the pwns (thats what the kids say nowadays right?).

My 15 year old cousin is really good at MW2 but thats all he can afford, so its the only thing he plays, I guess thats why they are so good.

45 killstreak on KillZone 2.

Sorry but I gotta brag about that, KillZone is fucking hard.
I'll forgive you for bragging on that one, as a 45 kill streak is impressive in any game!
You've obviously never played KillZone, its really fucking hard, it makes MW2 look like a walk on a falling log.

I'm the gamer that just doesn't care if he's winning or not. I just love playing the game. If I win, awesome, if not, meh. I've gotten to the point where if I know I'm going to be losing I switch to a strategy or loadout which is just mind-bogglingly annoying to the other players, and then I run around like a wombat on crack.

I play for fun, don't really care about the results. Most of the time it goes good.
Exactly, agreed. I play for the fun, I love the depth of games like Fallout 3, but I like the ultimately shallow, but overall enjoyable passive online shooting fun in any current gen COD or Battlefield.

I play to have fun, but its also fun to win, so I try my best, and I usually end up pretty average (sub-average in COD, better in TF2, and much much better in BF:BC2)

It all ultimately depends on the person set really. If I'm in a lobby with 11 other LV 70 Prestige, I'm doomed, but if its a group of normal people in TF2, I'm going to dominate.

Im pretty good at Rts's compared to my other friends and i pick it up really fast along with fighting games. Fps's is completely dependant, I Dominate at halo but Modern Glitchfare 2 I usually get about 3/4 of my deaths , that said i have my good games too and im not max level or prestiged. But leveling in Fps's seems dumb to me.

I work best in teams, I like to contribute to the whole rather than work alone. That's probably why I dislike COD and play Batlefield. I can easily hold my own, (I was pretty good at COD) but playing by yourself is nowhere near as fun as having a good team. I say try team based games, who knows that may be your style. Some people only do well in a good team.

The only games I'm not usually very good at are RTS games and Racing games. But, everything else, I usually pick up pretty quickly.

How can you be bad at COD? The game aims for you every time you snap the sights, there's no recoil, you get fucking free cheap kills every time you get an easy to get killstreak, grenades can go over buildings and you get perks which get you kills in certain situations which you don't actually deserve.

I'm pretty good if the person I'm playing against is within gut-punching range, but I rarly even bother for online.

I'm probably the first one I used to play the hell out of Halo 3 but I NEVER got any better that game still haunts me now. However I also got addicted to MW2 but at least I seemed to be improving at that there was a time when I barely went positive in every match I play and now I suck at that one. As for fighting games I once actually got SSBB's multiplayer to work well with no lag and then proceeded to get my ass kicked by people with presumably much faster reflexes. In RTS games the enemy usually pwns me with a massive army before I even have ten units. So I'm not so good a multiplayer yet I still play it a lot. I don't get any better often but then again I tend to rage-quit after one loss and never play again.
