Whats the appeal with microphones? I know its easier to say something but in most games it really is just annoying and at times sounds like a daycare center, I know text is a hassle, but microphones take the seriousness of the game far down.

Well I prefer text anyway, let's you use symbols like ☺ ☻ and it doesn't ruin the setting. I mean in real life no one usually goes out to fight terrorists while listening to some 12 year old negotiating with his parents to stay up more.

Because it's easier and faster to convey a message. Take TF2 for instance. If you're playing a Medic, you have to be able to call out if there's a spy near by, if there's enemies around, if you're ready to use the Uber, when to rush, and the like. You can't very easily do that through text, or at least not fast enough. Text also keeps you from moving forward or attacking; you'll be wide open to attack while making your message. It leave you at a disadvantage.
