Please explain. I wondered if Mass Effect could benefit from an online mmorpg style co-op, but I keep thinking it wouldn't work since many people who played Mass Effect thought the gameplay wasn't smooth enough and had many flaws, but incidentally the story immersion makes up for those flaws.

I'm sure an MMO or separate multiplayer game in the Mass Effect universe would be great.

But for the main game, I would hate to see the final part of Shepard's epic story take second place to a tacked on multiplayer that is only there because it's in vogue at the moment.

Mass Effect is a shining example of a single player game to lose yourself in alone, I don't want to sit there with a buddy naging me to pick the renegade option or skip the dialogue, nor have I any interest in the campaign being made shorter because they were too busy making a multiplayer mode I'll never play.

Inevitably, there are trolls/dicks in every game. Personally, I enjoy competitive multiplayer because I'm one of those people that enjoys winning. Of course, I don't mind losing if it was a fault of mine. I do take it a bit seriously, but not to the extent that the average person sees when someone rages.

Also, I've seen some decent reasons to hate on multiplayer, but I find a lot of it to be either personal issues such as the major turnoff that some games have with the learning curve, I admit it is very hard to get into a game where people have a crapload of experience playing, or they find the trolls/assholes unbearable.

Hmm, I like almost all FPS and also AoE 3 multiplayer. I'm good at very planned team work and lone wolf, but not team work on the fly.

So,

Pro: I like MP cos I like playing against real people who adapt their tactics in real time. It's often more engaging than the single player version. I generally prefer objective based modes, as death match is just too far from a realistic scenario. Also, because I've played a lot of FPS games, I can normally adapt quickly. I'll never be one of the brutal ninja killers, but I hold my own.

Con: I hate MP cos my team mates are too often a pack of depressed lemmings or a collective cowering bunny. I also get tired of people getting the shits over "camping" where an enemy is SUPPOSED to be holding an objective. Have you ever seen real soldiers tasked with holding a position go running all over the countryside flailing their arms, screaming "Shoot me! I deserve it!)?

How to make it better: Shock collars! Belt 'em with a blast when they get hit. You oughta be hesitant to get hurt. >

Love it, when done right. Don't get me wrong, I also love single player games, in fact my GOTY is single player only, but the fact is that a game with multiplayer and a good community just has endless replayability. Now, when I say "good community" I mean a few things. For starters, it means an active one. As much as I enjoy Star Wars: battlefront 2, I really can't play it that much because there is literally NO community for it anymore. As for "done right" that means no tacked on or just boring MP. Looking at you, BioShock 2 and Red Dead Redemption. Loved both your campaigns, but that online...blech. Also, healthy DLC support is always a good thing, or let the community make their own maps. Both awesome. Lastly, for the love of the jesus, NO REGION LOCK. Half of the friends I play games with on a regular basis live in the UK, so when a big game we all look forward to playing together comes out and, gasp, has region lock, it's understandably pretty upsetting....Starcraft 2.

I am extremely lucky when it comes to online multiplayer because I mostly find nice funny mature people when playing multiplayer that can use each of their skills to help the team most efficiently and I was drawn into games by the social aspect so I like meeting nice people. it also helps by the fact in most multiplayer games I am normally on the top end of the skill level but below tournament skill level yea I could probably just be able to beat someone who is tournament skill level but I would have to try harder then I could be bothered too also a good opponent draws out my most skilled site were I am almost a one with the game and I unleash major butt kicking for about 30sec.

I will recount some examples of why I stopped playing different types of games multiplayer(exaggeration not included):

Halo 3:
(voicechat) "Yo diligent, you best be rippin' up dat turret and bringin' it to da frontlinez muthafucka. Don't be a little *****."
It's just a game, and games are supposed to be fun. I don't want to hear shit like that when I'm trying to have fun. I get ordered around enough at work, and I especially don't want to hear it from somebody who's probably 10 years my junior.

Left 4 Dead:
I hit the button to the elevator in no mercy hospital my first time playing it without knowing the consequences. We still go through it but while on the elevator:
[voicechat] "Why the fuck did you press the button before we were ready?"
me: "my bad, sorry"
[voicechat] "Uninstall the game and kill yourself, you suck."
me: "yes sir, thank you sir"

Soul Calibur 4:
My win/loss ratio was abysmal...I was at like 40 losses to 0 wins, and on my very first win (with Nightmare, always played random) I'm having my own private celebration and suddenly I get a private message stating:
"Learn to play with a real character cheap n00b"

And RTS's...well you may as well play against an AI that is programmed to do everything efficiently to the nanosecond with no room for error. Far too competitive for my tastes.

A competitive or cooperative games at a LAN with some good friends on the other hand is awesome, and it's how I like to get my multiplayer fix.
as long as I know the people on the other end are in it for fun as well then I'm game, but a lot of the time they aren't and then I stop having fun too. And I still enjoy the occasional game of team fortress 2 as well.

Single player is my preferred game type though, and Yahtzee/ZP has nothing to do with it.

It's my experience that the annoying twelve year olds and teabaggers are not as prevalent as complained about on here. Sure they exist but in my experience the games are either filled with quiet types like myself that don't really chatter that much or people in parties.

Yeah If mass effect 3 would have multiplayer i would go WHY!!!!!!!!!! BUT if Bioware made Mass effect online that had a story about i dont know the whole commutiy are trying to find shepard in very stroy progeressed quest such as World Of Warcraft Wrath of the linch king as you try to defeat the linch king i think that would be great and i would buy it in a heartbeat.

I really like MP, what I don't like is how MP is killing a lot of purely single player games. If a single player game is made properly I'll happily go back and play it over and over, don't attach a mp segment to the game in an attempt to get people playing slightly longer. I would happily go and play Prince of Persia: the sands of time right now, if they put mp in mass effect 3 I think I'll die a little inside.

Look at Assassin's Creed Brotherhood for example, the story was about half the length of Assassin's Creed 2, presumably because the devs were busy making a multiplayer mode which I have not even tried and never will.
