Hello there, fellow Escapist members!

I like to talk a lot (that's just my personality, sorry), so if you are uninterested in anything else than the core of the topic, you can go now to the tl;dr part.

I am a dedicated gamer since my early childhood. I walked the path of gaming from simple games on Amiga, through 199x PC games to current full HD graphic etc. prodcuts, and loved many of those. Somewhere along the road though, I asked myself a question - What do I seek in games? Finally, games like KotOR gave me the answer - Plot! I want a brilliant plot! While games like Diablo, Painkiller, Serious Sam etc. can be a ton of fun, the thing that really turns me on the game is a good plot.

But that's a pretty wide category, isn't it? So I needed to narrow down this topic. I played through many games with better or worse plot, and I think that thanks to some really crappy graphic/sound/animation wise, but great concept/plot wise game called Pathologic, and thanks to latest (IMO of course) masterpiece of QD, Heavy Rain - I think, I finally get it.

I just LOVE games that presents one plot from a few different playable points of view. We have at least 2 heroes, who are involved in the same plot, but they are different, they are seeing different thigns, they are getting different feelings, and though they are shaping two (or more!) worlds, they both are giving us the pieces of puzzle which alone are not making much sense, but when combined, they are making sense and a great story along the way. This is my ideal of a game plot, and if any game will manage to deliver it, I'm willing to forgive many of it's flaws, if the story is well thought. And this brings me to:

tl;dr: Do you guys know any games that can present the one game story with concept of multiple characters shaping it together into one big awesomeness? You know, like we have character A who learns some bizarre things which makes no sense at the first glance, and so is character B, but when you combine their experiences you have a full shape of a greatly thought story? Is there a game like this waiting for me on the shelves, or does it exist only in my perfect world? If it doesn't exist, a game of one good story told from at least a few points of view will do as well.

Bonus point if the story contains some kind of a mystery to unfold by characters.

If you know a game with that kind of concept - please post it here (and of course NO SPOILERS, as that would a true blasphemy).

Well, since you mention Heavy Rain, you could try the predecessor, Indigo Prophecy. It's very similar in play style.

Edit: I might also add Gabriel Knight to this list. They are dark mystery games, and they do switch characters a little, though you mostly stay as the main character. They are older PC games, but still very interesting.

And one more Edit I just thought of: Fear Effect and Fear Effect 2, to some extent are a little like this. Story told from different points of view, that unravels as you play. It's much more action oriented than Heavy Rain though. It's a PS game, but it may hold up well graphics wise, since it was cell shaded.

Devil May Cry 2.

...you think I'm joking, don't you? Dante and Lucia following different paths (up to and including different final bosses) was one of the better parts of the game.

Played it. Loved it, even as it went batshit insane halfway through.

I'll definitely check Gabriel Knight as I heard a lot of praise about it long time ago.

Really? That's interesting...

I added Fear Effect and Fear Effect 2 to my list in yet another edit.

I've also heard Shenmue is like this, though I have yet to play that game.

Now, admittedly, <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.158447-Off-Topic-Reviews-Devil-May-Cry-series>the game has other problems. It doesn't deserve a lot of the hate it gets, but it's still the least-liked DMC title for good reason.

Devil May Cry 2 doesn't even manage that, and I found that frustrating. The story at least had potential (Dante hired to take out a corrupt corporate president seeking demonic ascension, a plot point used to much greater effect in DMC3), and there are hints all over the game that they could have had it...and dropped the ball. Some of it was due to technical problems (the voice acting, urgh), but a lot could have been much better served with a few more cutscenes and better-written dialogue. The story also has essentially no connection to the Sparda mythos, but I wouldn't have held that against it if it had managed it's own story satisfactorily.
I guess this might technically negate my recommendation. Still, the game was good, if far from great. And I really did like the fact that Lucia and Dante effectively played two halves of the game, and you do have to play both to make sense of the cutscenes.
