Sod's Law states that toast will always land butter side-down.

In actuality, Murphy was a military officer (I would guess a drill sergeant, since he trained new recruits) who regularly stated the terms of the law to the people under him. He said it to encourage them to be prepared for the nasty eventualities that tend to happen on the battlefield. However, most individuals feel that the law has come true for them multiple times, since life throws a lot of crap at them.

Obviously the terms of the law aren't fulfilled constantly for every person, but we humans think we sound smart when we quote each other, so we're quick to look for opportunities to see the law at work.

I have my own version of this: Part of my Three Constants of the Modern World.

1) It can be killed with fire.
2) Not everything that can go wrong will go wrong, but something, however small, will go wrong somewhere.
3) There is always time for cake.

the actual law as stated by Col Murphy was "if there's a way for him to fark it up he will", change fark to something that resembles firetruck and you got the correct quote

here's a bit of history on it

So, what's the difference between Murphy's Law and Sod's Law?
Everyone's heard of Murphy's Law but hardly anyone has heard of Sod's Law.
Impossible! Everyone knows Sod's Law!
Sod's Law is the English version of Murphy's Law. Or like, the Northern English version. Although I think 'Sod's Law' is more applicable with people and pessimism. For instance, Murphy would say that your date will be run over by a car on her way to the restaurant. Sod's would say she's run off with your best friend.

So, your girlfreind being killed is more optimisstic than her running off with your best freind?

Why did you bring Rule #34 in to this? It's like bringing in Godwin's Law.

Interesting (sort-of) anecdote for yah; last night I was eating dinner and the topic turned to Muprhy's law. After dinner I went to use the bathroom. The plumbing backed up.

I think the universe has a personal grudge against me. That's why I never bet anything on anything. It doesn't matter what I bet on, if I stand a chance of winning anything I will inevitably lose.

I bet my friend that the sky would be blue tomorrow and a huge dust storm turned the sky brown for the entire day. It came out of nowhere. The weather guy didn't know it was coming.

Tragically, in this world it would seem that Darwin has failed, and Murphy rules supreme. Such bitter times, are these.

The full version is: "If there are two ways of doing something and one of them leads to disaster, that way will always be done first."

Unless the show I watched years ago lied to me.
It did not. Murphy was a rocket test engineer or some such scientist. G-Force testing units could go two ways at one point when they were testing one of those rocket sled doohicky's and some nuffa put them all on backwards.

Check wikipedia for more info (I think)

Don't forget about Muphry's Law (yes, that's spelled correctly):

-If you write anything criticizing someone's editing or proofreading, there will be a fault of some kind in what you have written.

It's my duty to spread the word. Don't mess with Muphry.

I've had Murphys Law, Anti-Murphy's Law, and WTF Law happen to me all the time.

Murphys Law: We all know this one, worst thing at the worst time yadda yadd...

Anti-Murphys Law: The best thing at the best time, odd but does happen to me alot.

WTF Law: The weirdest thing will happen at the weirdest time, This happens way more than should for me.

Theres a podcast called "Stuff You Should Know" that has something about Murphys Law. It states that someone actually made an equation based on the law that was actually pretty accurate.
