While playing through Portal 2, it struck me while standing high up on a platform, two inches from certain discouragement (read: laser beams); As I solve puzzles, different objects emit individual parts of the background soundtrack...I love this!
It certainly wasn't the first time I'd encountered such a system in a game, though I'm at a loss to recall many off the top of my head. It's just that it's such a lovely little perk, to be given musical cues upon success.
I'm not just talking about an up-beat musical sting upon finishing a level either. I am talking about interactive musical "rewards", as you're completing challenges/puzzles/bosses/etc.
Shadow of the Colossus comes to mind; as you approach a colossi, the BGM kicks in. When you finally do manage to successfully grab hold onto the beast, a roaring finale plays for you as you bring down your impossibly large foe -- it was brilliant.
It really is striking just how much making the soundtrack interactive can add to the experience. Can you think of any other examples of this in games (that aren't expressly music-genre games)? I'd certainly like to give them a try! Would you?
