Lately, I've been finding that some games actually have pretty good music. Tomb Raider, Silent Hill and Duke Nukem to name a few. Has anyone ever really taken the music to games seriously?

All the time man, music's a huge part of what will potentially make or break a game for me. MGS3 wouldn't be the same without that groovy Snake Eater song, hell what would Mario be without his classic themes?

Halo. The entire trilogy. I don't think any game has taken it's music that seriously. I also have never heard better music than Halo music.
Halo-fanboyism aside, I have to agree with the fact that Halo has always done music well...and I'm not a big Halo fan.

Since I started gaming, I loved the music in games. Well, some games. The theme to Zak McKracken [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1pFn8MfJWw] was one of the first that really got me hooked, and that was back in the day when bleeps and bloops were all we had for music. Ecco the Dolphin and its sequel [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECxQnlPa5UY&feature=related] contained what I believe to be some of the most effective and atmospheric music of the 16 bit era.

And then there's Final Fantasy. The music from that series has become an institution in itself, and with good reason. Hundreds of years from now it will still be played, just as we still listen to the music of Mozart (The Magic Flute and, say, Final Fantasy VI... classic tales set to epic music... are they really so different?)

Personally I think it's tougher to find decent music in games these days. Production values have gone up, but has the quality? I'm not sure. It all seems a bit generic to me now. There are exceptions, of course.

The best music ever in a game is... well, you know what I'm talking about...

Yep. Painkiller, Grandia II, Megaman, Mirror's Edge, Donkey Kong Country... there are so many that have really good music, I can't list them all.

Silent Hill. I have not played the games but i listen to the soundtracks on a regular basis. Also FFX had some pretty nice piano pieces.

I don't mean to sound like a broken record, but I'll have to say Shadow of the Colossus and Silent Hill.

Seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarch Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar.

With that out of the way, we can continue. HL2 and ep 1 ep 2 had wicked music. It wasn't constant, and only came in on cue with large scale fights; when you heard it, you knew something big was coming. Besides that, the music was techno and really fitted the game. The same goes for Portal, there isn't always music, but when it comes in, you know something signifigant is goin' down. "Still Alive" is wicked; I'll just make a note:huge success. Metal Gear Solid's musical scores always impressed me aswell. Also, Halo. I've only played through the first one, back when I had an X-Box alllll those years ago when gaming was simple (ahhh, grand days), but I still remember how wicked the music was. Fallout 3 has awesome music, which tie's in with the setting perfectly. Last but not least, Mario 64 has bitchin' music and I don't care who knows it!!!

Silent Hill 2 comes to mind, of course. Also, Indigo Prophecy (it has the composer of Twin Peaks). Halo's soundtrack is pretty epic. Doom is good. So is Portal. And the Metal Gear Solid series. So... yeah.

Wow, way to post a generic overdone thread. But... Genesis era Sonic the Hedgehog will always have a special place in my heart when it comes to soundtracks.

Oh and [small]*readies flames suit*[/small] The Kingdom Hearts series has a superb soundtrack. Strange coming from a guy who loves Five Finger Death Punch and Killswitch Engage.

Some Games just wouldn't be right without their signature music. Simon Belmont wouldn't be as baddass without his own theme and Kefka would be as creepy without the music.

As for actual soundtracks:Any Castlevania game, Tales of Legendia, Persona 3/4 and the remake of P1 and any FF

For me, there is no better game music than that found in Donkey Kong Country 2. And possibly the best song in that game is Jib Jig, played in some of the pirate ship levels.
