In my opinion, music is an important part of getting immersed in a game. And some of those games have outstanding soundtracks, like the Final Fantasy series. So what factor does music play to all of you?

Memorability. If I ever find myself humming the tune of some game or really wanting to buy the soundtrack to listen to the tunes whenever I want, then I would consider it to have "great music."

I want game music that will make me want to listen to it standalone.

A good beat makes me fight Harder, or sets the entire tone of a game, or adds much needed Atmoshpere.

Music and sound is Vital, Games like Winterbottom are a joy because of its Game Mechanics but its Whismy is set by its Music.

Also he doesn't love Halo's Soundtrack?

Remixes i know, cant seem to find the originals to those though.

Found one, now who can say this doesn't bring back delight?

It depends. Mostly I don't notice it unless it's really good.

A very recent example of video game music that has hooked me in is this little number:

Not only is it catchy, but it makes a lot of sense within context (which makes the fight hilarious on top of badass).

It adds to the atmosphere, it strengthens the emotions of the games, and as a music lover extravaganza, it satisfies me a lot, especially with games like Golden Sun, Shadow of The Colossus, and the Final Fantasy games.

One thing I do like is modern remakes of songs. One of my favorite artists for that is metal guitarist Daniel Tidwell:

YES! I HAVE FOUND ANOTHER WHO LIKES THAT THEME!

Music is important is establishing the tone and setting the mood. That's a lot of burden to put on a score, and in the end, it will either succeed or fail.

A case of it being done right, however, is right here:

It elevated the fight to one of my favorite bosses in the entire game.

I think the only one I liked more was Alice Twilight. Hated the final boss though.

Cheap bastard...

The burnout series, NFS and Tony Hawk's Proskaters/THUGS are epic for games for these reasons:

Up-beat, making the game more enjoyable. Related to the game's genre (Imagine classical music playing over Need for Speed., it is wrong) and lastly, catchy. I can safely guarantee there will be mulitple people who fell in love with some of the songs from these games.

Hell, its what first got me into Rise Against <3

Both two of my favorite themes of all MGS. Though I have to give the music that plays in Arsenal Gear credit during MGS2, it got my blood pumping during the big fights in there.

Music/Sound is 80% of the game to me. It sets a scene, theme and subconsciously tells you whats going on around you.

Music can be incredibly useful. Halo is one of the best examples of a game with an incredible soundtrack. If a game's music could be used on a montage for that game, then it's likely to work well.

Music is a Huge part of the game.

Ill forgive a game for a poor soundtrack but, it does hurt my opinion of it a little.

It also helps me get immersed in the game and makes it more memorable.

a few of my favorite themes from some of my favorite games are...

Hearing that at the MENU instantly gave this game a spot as one of my favorites, after beating the game...its probably my favorite Game of all time.
The Music for the Doom Dragon made the fight all the more exciting and suspenseful.
The whole game had amazing music.
AND
SRT OG Saga:EF was a amazing game, and the music only made it better...
I need to buy the Soundtrack,
Oh and EXCEED F'ING WHEN!?

Well, generally I suppose I don't pay too much attention to game music, since it is generally pretty mediocre. That said, when someone does it right, I feel it really adds a lot to the game.

My favorite example would be Dead Rising. I absolutely loved the soundtrack to dead rising, I spent enough god damned money acquiring an imported copy of the soundtrack for myself, and I felt it was one of the many things the game did exceedingly well.

Music can really set the mood for the specific part, or level of a game. That said, Syphon Filter had the best video game music I've ever heard. The music was amazing in itself, while still setting the mood, and tempo for the level. A close runner-up for me would be F-Zero GX.

A soundtrack; be it musical or ambient, can lend a piece a great deal. And for me, it's vital in establishing an immersive sphere.
It can allow even the most basic premise transcend the sum of its parts.

A few favourites; picked for their ability to enhance the experience.

All of Red Dead Redemption's music, it's absolutely brilliant. So is Dragon Age: Origins.

Another thing, I find the Silent Hill series to have a good soundtrack. It's very atmospheric.

Any of the Golden Sun songs still bring back fond memories =).
My personal favorite is the Morrowind theme and the other songs played during exploring. They were also essential as any time the music stopped it meant something was trying to attack you. And it could be a cliffracer DX!

In Eversion, music (or the lack of it) is a big part of creating the atmosphere.

Depends on the genre. In danmaku shooters, I use music to keep my timing and just focus on the music to keep from getting to caught up in over-thinking the patterns. In any other genre of game I play, I just think it's there for atmosphere.
