I know it's rap, but surely one of you must have some sort of opinion! I know you normally like to talk about them.

It's neither, it's just mixing two pieces of music. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm not horribly offended by it but I'm not entertained by it either. I think mash-ups are just dull, I'd rather hear the two pieces separately, personally, but if other people like them together - hey, whatevs.

Disappointed that this is a thread about mash-ups instead of actual music mixing.

Curious as to what your opinion would be on songs that were meant to be played together then? They functioned apart but when put together they would blow minds.

Such as that one large Tool one Cracked reported on.

Nothing Tool ever did blew my mind, I find their messing around with various mathematical and structural concepts to be ponderous and boring, encapsulating everything that was wrong about prog rock in the 1970s. It's been all downhill since "Sober" for them if you ask me.

As for anyone else doing it, why not just put the shit together in the first place and save the pissing about, that's what I think.

I'd have to agree with BonsaiK, it's nothing special. There are a few mashups I enjoy, but I don't see it as particularly interesting. Also the mix up between "mixing" and mash-ups threw me off a bit. Though I think a topic on mixing would wind up largely homogeneous against the modern "louder is more better" philosophy, assuming that was the groundwork for the thread.

Kind of annoyed the topic was really just a way for you to plug your friends site and is poorly thought out.

Personally, I consider mixing and mashups to be the same thing. Intertwining beats and vocals so I don't see the difference. Though I'm sure there's someone more well versed in the subject who could tell me better.

As to the second one, meh.

On the side of working, gaming, skateboarding and such, I'm a mash up artist and I actually have some stuff here www.lieutenantsurge.tumblr.com

I love mash ups. I think it brings new life to both songs, and sometimes you can make really cohesive mash ups. It's also really fun to try and use two songs of complete different genres and mash them up and to actually make them fit and editing them in such a way that can give you a whole new look on the songs.

I think I might have tuned in too late to that ustream thing because all that he was playing was dubstep, but I think using any part of a song in anything but it's original context is not just creative, but also bad ass. For my money, there's nothing like a good mash up. =]

Mashups. Ugh.

I guess because I'm a musician they just don't appeal to me, I'm more impressed when someone makes a good piece of music themselves.
