Wrong. Best way to stop this stuff is to smack the stupid out of them.

I don't own any:
Rap
Country...
Maybe some other genres I don't care about.

I listen to Everything else.
Music is subjective.

Teenagers today are extremely xenophobic when it comes to music, I would know I'm a sophomore on High School. The worst part is when people try to tell me that screamo is better than anything Pantera had ever put out, w/o even ever listening to them. Ah yes, one "gangsta" guy I know tried to tell me that no one ever liked Run DMC and that Lil' Jon was 100% better, that mademe /facedesk.

Why? Blink 182 sucks.
They did not... I know it's the cool thing to say they did n' all, but it's just not true. The swarm of copycat shit that followed them did suck, however. (Except for some of Sum41- Dave was a beast of a guitarist compared to what we get nowadays)

Maybe they didn't ruin music, but they still suck.

What bothers me, is the group of people that seem to have the notion in their heads that the only modern music is either rap or pop. Try some ska.

To me, music died when people started using samples, instead of actually playing an instrument. The synthesizer contributed to this.

Rap (the kind you DON'T see on tv or hear on the radio) is the only genre that uses samples properly, by mixing in clever lyrics (again, keep in mind, this is NOT 50 Cent I'm talking about here). Improvised rap battles are godly if the rappers involved are a bit decent at it.

DJ's however.. they just put on a record, play it, then lay a simple beat with it. And the crowd goes wild. Sigh.

Nice comeback... Seriously, I can't figure out how to respond to that... It's funny about Blink 182 and Sum 41 in particular, because on forums frequented by musicians (and people who just know about music) there's a general consensus that these two bands... (get this) don't suck. Nobody claims that they're great musicians with amazing technical capabilities, but neither were for instance The Hollies, The Byrds or even, say, The Rolling Stones, but they had an ear for something as elusive as a good song.

Like for instance Gift of Gab, eh? I love me some Blackalicious.

trust me, i know how that is. i took a rock n' roll history class last year and everyone in there kept talking about how shitty the music was in the class while im sitting there enjoying listening to some zeppelin and floyd. its such a disgrace that an entire generation has gone on without any good music (music died in the mid 90's, around the same time Blink 182 was founded...)
I agree wholeheartedly.

I agree. Many people, especially teenagers and the like, seem to deliberately try to make crude stereotypical comments on things they have never experienced.
Oh god. I agree 100%

My hero!
Except that Roger McGuinn is actually a pretty impressive finger picker, your point stands. Michael Clarke was hired for his appearance, and despite his brilliance Gene Clark ended up playing tambourine on the songs he wrote.

This isn't to say there aren't old bands with dazzling technical abilities, see for example John Cipollina of Quicksilver Messenger Service.

Eh, I still think they suck. Musicians can say all they like, but my personal taste says they aren't good.

Gangsta Rap =/= Rap

Gangsta Rap=/= half the shit rap you hear now days. Lil Wayne is not "gangsta". 50 Cent is not "gangsta". Both are raping the culture... The only thing 50's done right in the past 15 years is played the keys on the beats for "how we do" and "hate it or love it". On both, however, his verses were shit.

If you were listening to aussie rap, PLEASE tell me you were listening to Hilltop Hoods? Their music is the best and most consistant rap I've heard in ages. I agree with you that the old stuff is dismissed too easily, but I can't listen to screamo or whatever it's called. We all have our dislikes.

edit: on the topic of Hilltop Hoods, and seeing the guy above me: "Isn't it ironic? But not the sort that makes you laugh, these "MC's" are making futures by raping the past" -1979. Great song in general, I'd give it a look on youtube.
Unfortunately, no, one kid beside me actually mentioned it to me. To tell you the truth, I have my own random tastes, but rap usually doesn't fall in the category. I don't think most of the stuff on the radio is well, good at all.

First off most of them are rapping about how horrible and "living in the ghetto" is. It is a ridiculous perspective on what the hood is like, because most of them are ridiculously rich, as well as living in giant mansions with sick cars.

Hey man, this ain't a new phenomenon! Don't let it drag you down, they'll grow up and feel ignored by the next generation.

I hope we'll be able to see the beauty in all music someday, even a grudging nod to stuff we think is sh*t. Then we'll be dealing with the kind of variety which might reflect the vibration of matter and the complexity of life.

There's a huge difference between not liking someone and saying they flat out suck... For instance, my stomach turns when I listen to (and look at) Yngwie Malmsteen, but I'll admit that he has good technical flair and decent skills as a composer (IE. does not suck).

Eh, I say suck when I don't like something. So while Blink 182 may have all this talent and may be good at what they do, I still think they suck because I can't stand to listen to them.
