It's hard to find anything resembling a music scene anymore. There's nothing happening anywhere like Memphis in the 1950's or San Francisco in the 1960's or even Seattle in the early 90's. This is really the first decade since the beginning of modern pop music that has not had a music scene (unless I'm just in the dark about modern music). Has the spread of the Internet and its networking sites (Myspace, Facebook, etc.) plus the onslaught of 24-hour media made the idea of a particular music hotspot extinct?

Well...yeah. Now you don't need to be in a certain place to hear a specific type of music, you just need to google it and then download it. And even if you can't get to a certain festival or something the chances are that someone will film it and put it on youtube.

London, England. Specifically Camden Town/Islington has had the Goth music scene since the 80's and that's still going.

Yeah, I'm sure every major city has its own scene. I'm in Memphis and we've got a bit of a metal thing going on down here right now. But I'm talking about a specific place where a lot of music is being made that's making a big impact on pop music. Places like the Los Angeles metal era in the 80's or the UK in the 70's with glam, punk, and metal. Places that we look back on ten years later and say, "there was some great music coming out of there that really changed things."

But I suppose with Youtube and Myspace, anyone with a guitar can put down whatever songs they've got for the world to hear. And with computer programs like Garageband on Macs, it's pretty simple for anyone to record themselves.

I've never been to Memphis but I have heard great things about the scene and the kids up there, Toronto/St.catharines Have put out Attack In Black, Alexisonfire, Silverstein, Cancer Bats and Dead and Divine, who are much more mainstrean now and have screaming vocals, so I guess they helped change pop music a little. I personally prefer underground music anyways, I find it has a lot more integrity than a woman singing about her PA PA PA Pokerface

Well yeah, that's true. But in each country there are musicians who come often.

(Manowar for me! yay!)

London and Brighton will always have their scenes, even if they're a bit understated at various times. London covers everything, while Brighton's more of a hipster kinda place.

There is the unsigned band sort of thing. Go to a small bar or hangout in Chicago and find some great indie crap. Minus the Girl is one of the biggest examples of what I hear.

Last.fm is where I always listen to music now, or occasionally also Youtube. Otherwise I just go and buy the CD's of bands and artists I really like...

Yeah that sounds like the Memphis scene, with the metal bands with the screaming vocals. I've never really been into them, but I've seen enough of them in all the clubs around here.

I agree, the lesser known music is usually much better than most of the dreck that's out there now.

Yeah, London has always been on the scene in some greater or lesser form since the 60's. It's just one of those perpetually swinging cultural places I guess. I'm not as familiar with the Brighton rock (har har, Queen song)

Canada has a great scene, the northwest coast has a good darker metal scene (wolves in the throne room, agalloch, etc)

Brazil has an amazing post Rock Scene

Tokyo japan has some pretty interesting experimental stuff.

London england obviously has a fantastic scene of music.

there are a lot of small pockets in other european countries, france has a pretty good black metal scene.

Though I do agree, that with the advent of the internet, music scenes have started to just take a global scale to be honest. I'm pretty sure its a good thing because a lot of smaller artists are getting more publicity than they would without the internet.

Yeah, as far as places go, it's much more isolated at this point. The Internet is the new scene; it's all about how you put the music out, not where it comes from.

Also, am I the only one who finds it a little difficult to imagine France and Black Metal together? lol
