I (personally) don't like it. All it sounds like to me is one person saying the same line over and over again; and another person at a computer to make the actual music. Occasionally, I hear something I like, but to me, most music is just dull to me. Breakup songs have taken a bad turn too. They all say: 'I'm glad your gone.' I don't know about you, but I haven't met a single person who enjoyed a break-up. Say anything you want about me, but keep the main topic in mind.

You are by no means the first person to realise the deficiencies of 'popular' music.

In short, its shit.

But thats coming from a dignified fan of old school metal, so its probably not all that significant.

Music today has gone to shit because it's all the same three types.

Overly-androgenous teenage money-slaves singing about either wanting to love or not being loved.

Fast-paced poetry (rap) about a guy being overly rich and wanting to bone every woman he sees. and

Country.

Not all of the Pop music genre is bad, but it seems that the amount of crap you have to wade through is increasing all the time.

Ehhh that is pretty much a reason why I don't even bother with the mainstream stuff/whatever them darn kids are calling "hip" these days. For me at the very least there is still good music out there to listen to. For the most part what I usually do is just take recommendations from pitchfork.com for my music (although a lot of the time their reviews are just effin ridiculous)

It's the first sign of getting old. that being said Dance music is shit, DJ's are people with no talent and no sampling someone elses shit doesn't give you the right to act like you are a musician.

I'm just going to call this the "Robert Ebert/Art" kind of thread.

Yarp. My music tastes pretty much dwindle to nothing with anything beyond 1995 or so. Very little beyond that point suits my tastes, or if it does its only because it seems to go well with some YouTube video or something.

The "best music ever" is whatever music you listened to at age 14. Go ahead, ask your parents what their parents thought about Elvis, The Beatles or The Who (depending on when they grew up).

Good Job. You classified all current music based on what you hear on the radio.

But seriously, if you don't want to listen to shit, turn your radio off, now. There are PLENTY of rock bands and artists making music today doing brilliant things, it just depends where your taste lies. If you're searching along the line of grunge into the shitty "post-grunge" bands of today I'm not surprised you think music at the moment is shite.

Look for music elsewhere, saying that all music from this time is shit just makes you look misinformed. There are still good artists dwelling out there.

Actually I hate everything I listened to when I was 14. I tend to find brilliant bands and albums more and more as the years go on. I've a pretty progressive taste in music though.

Ho hum...every few days some chump goes on a rant about how all new music is shit and there's nothing worth listening to anymore...just like people have always done. Music was always just as good/bad as it is now, you just forget about the bad stuff so it seems like the past was some golden age of greatness.

Oh please. This again? Music isn't an absolute. I wish people would get off the soapbox and take a deep breath.

And to prove that contemporary music isn't crap; enjoy.

Yes I'll agree with most of your point.
How many more tunes will the big labels be able to milk those voice distored vocals on.You know the ones that sound like their voice is getting squeezed through an electronic filter.
Fuck me sideways thats getting overabused now.
Also those RnB songs where the backing vocals go,"Hey..Ho..Hey..Ho".

You really have to dig through google and follow many links and suggestions on many and varied forum websites to discover quality music nowdays.

Oh god, it sure sounds like a loud of angry old people in here

All music (including your beloved metal) is the majority shit, with gems you have to find. Time period and genre has nothing to do with it, and for the most part is just snobbery such as

"metal is just noise"

"rap is just fast talking about money and bitches"

"dance/techno is just unskilled sampling"

These are my 3 favorite genres, and I am constantly having to defend them from people like you

Realise you are making uninformed assumptions about scenes you know nothing about, and that lo and behold, different tastes exist. They all have individual incomparable skills and writing off any as "talentless" is utmost ignorance.

I personally think most old music sucks, and generally disregard most people's taste who are older than me, knowing that they are viewing everything with nostalgia goggles, and are just vastly out of touch with the current scenes.

This guy is the only person here talking sence

Oh, and the mainstream shit is almost always the worse in any scene (being it based more on marketing), before you write it off, beneath the surface exists even awesome pop music

well what is "music"? Some music is "bad" and that is based solely on ones opinion. Personally, I like most of what is coming from the rock/metal genres, I just wish grunge or alternative would make a stronger push...

No.

There is plenty of quality contemporary music out there.

The industry is much more diverse than you think.

Avoid the mainstream.

Dig deeper.

The most recent band I enjoy and listen to is Counting Crows. Besides them, my musical taste consists of about the late 80's and back. My main stuff comes from the 60's and 70's. People ask me why I listen to Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, etc. at age 17. I say "Because our generation of music isn't worth listening to. At least not what I have heard."

Music back around the 60's and 70's actually had meaning besides sex and break-ups. Have you heard S&G's "The Boxer"? Now THAT is a song with some meaning to it.

Well, that's my opinion, of course. If you enjoy Lady Gaga and T-Pain, by all means, listen to them. It all comes down to opinion.

I'm part of Generation X, and I'm here to say that your not alone.
A lot of my generation actually *despises* our music. You'd be amazed how often we ***** about the Nickelback clones, or the screamers. We know that it's shit. There's just nothing we can do about it.

Keeping that in mind, we tend to venture deep into the internet for little known bands. I recently came across a band called MGMT that I'm casually fond of. Most of the time though we stray into the earlier years. The Beatles, in fact, are making a bit of a comeback at my school.
