I don't play any outside music. The game is put together for you to get a particular feel from it and the soundtrack is included in that. If you ditch the soundtrack you change the game.

I play my own music during any online game or any single-player that I don't care to listen to. Mass Effect playthrough #9, I'm looking at you.

In a single player or co-op game, it's always game music or nothing. Multi player or MMO's however, I'll sometimes make use of my own music.

Music that is not part of the game = less immersion.

Therefore I avoid having anything else playing while gaming.

Depends on the game... I listen to some games' music, I play my own playlist in others (L4D with Metallica, ACDC, Alice in Chains and other stuff :p), and in some other games I prefer no music whatsoever (even if the game has background music -> eg: Crysis).

I listen to the game, to complete the immersiveness (or try hard to make the game immersive when it fails to pull in the player). I listen to music most of the times, so it's sort of a good pause.

I used to listen to music, but lately, I haven't been while play games online... I think it was because all of the sudden one day CoD4 would lock up when the song changed...

On PC I always play my own music. That's because I mainly shooters or Track mania.

Lately I've been listening to this on loop for ages while I play. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOWKlbICz0M

On xbox I play my own music from time to time, but the games just aren't as intense.

Unless I'm playing a game like TF2 where listening to music can make you miss the sound of an uncloaking spy and cause you to die, I usually put on punk or ska or alternative.

It depends.

Sometimes I listen to game music.(both from the game I'm playing, and soundtracks of other games)
Sometimes I listen to my playlist(44 whole songs with almost every genre)
Sometimes I play a movie like Repo! or Poultrygeist.(musicals with mostly unknown actors)
It's become a bit rarer, but I also listen to an online radio with opera and classical music.

For MMOs always my own, but for plot driven games the music conveys tone and is important to the feel, and in multiplayer I want to be able to hear the SOB sneaking up behind me.

I usually don't bother, but I put on Madonna last night when I was playing TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist.

I always listen to music while I game, not my own stuff though.

ACDC - TNT is the perfect TF2 song.

For games like WoW etc, I listen to all kinds of stuff. For online FPS, I play metal/rock/speed metal etc.

Depends on what I'm playing. I fully support custom soundtracks, because I like to listen to different songs during different parts of the game. If I'm in a battle, I like a good fast-paced epic death metal song. During the slow bits, a little classical music or something slower paced, travel music, if you will. Most of time I'll just listen to whatever the game has to offer though...

MMO's, FPS online game, and sports games I tend to blare some of my own music. Never do it when i'm playing through a story heavy single player game though.
