Being the music enthusiast i am i sometimes debate the topic with my friends. What bands we like, favorite albums etc.

Sometimes we talk about the popular music of today and personally i feel like not only has the melodies lost their souls, but the message of the songs themselves seem to be less impactful.

What i want to know is: "What song has had the most impact on you because of its message?"

If the song traces back to for example 70's it might be a good idea to explain the message in case the songs aren't really straightforward (which tended to be the case for the time).

What i would like to see though is examples of very current music with a meaningful message just so someone can prove me wrong on this.

Personally i want to go with 3 Doors Down. The messages may be clichéd, but i think they do it so well it's worth mentioning.

This is a topic very near and dear to me, and it'd be impossible for me to express just how many songs I like whose message is clear, and meaningful.

I'll just name a few albums, then:
Dirt by Alice in Chains, topics are very centric on drug abuse, and how it destroys ones life and soul
Lateralus by TOOL, emphasizes and encourages our ability, as humans, to transcend the boundaries set by our species. It goes way deeper than just that, but it's not something I'm prepared to explain thoroughly.
Red Hot Chili Peppers' newer stuff, focuses on love, and life, and happiness; honestly brings a tear to my eye, especially the song Hard To Concentrate.
Ten by Pearl Jam, emphasis on depression, and the more grueling aspects of life.
Soundgarden's Down On The Upside, about experiencing and overcoming life's hardships.
TOOL, again, with Undertow, this album is generally about the mans darker side: lying, cheating, stealing; rough stuff.

This is all 90's stuff, so it isn't exactly "modern", but meh, it's all good anyway.

modern music (last 5 years)with weight and meaning...hmmm tough one.
The wombats are consistantly writing clever love songs for a modern youth, anthems like Techno fan, School uniforms and Kill the Director all are lyrically clever and musically enageing (techno suffers from overproduction like most 21st century music). but also anything by SOKO and Gotye.

unmarked helicopters by the jezabels

but this song is excellent although this video doesn't do it justice, i think its about not knowing whos screwing you over in the modern world.

also something a little politcal from one of the masters of political

but most genres that had depth are dead(RIP punk) or instituionalised.

I do like the message that the song Hesitate by Stone Sour gives, it's such a powerful song and it just mellows me out whenever I hear it.

EDIT: Forgot one, The song Carry Me Down by Demon Hunter is the only song I have Ever listened to that has made me cry. I still get teary eyed whenever I hear it.

There is nothing better than a bit of Frank Turner. He pretty much captures Britain in Love Ire and Song. Long live the Queen is just good life advice.

Yeesh. So many possibilities. For some reason this one leaps immediately to mind, though.
