I'm only young, but I do appreciate the older music from much before my time, but why do other people see this old music as being bad? Most of the time this stuff is better than the crap we have now.

So, what do you think? Does old mean bad?? And also post any particular favouites you may have :D
For me, some Dean Martin and Creedence Clearwater Revival. There are others but yeah XD

Cheers

Old doesn't mean bad, it depends on what the song actually is. Ignore what year it came out completely, the only thing important should be if it sounds good.

The people who say old music is bad are ignorant douchebags and the people who say new music is bad are ignorant but not as.

Okay maybe music has deteriorated a bit, you just have to look a bit harder beyond the ads, news/media and the T.V..

How delightful.

First you ask why "other people" see "this" old music as being bad (which is wrong, most people are biased towards older music), and then call the music of today "crap", even though I am absolutely sure you haven't even heard of the bands that, for example, I listen to, that I like more than any other "rock legend" that eveyone flaunts around with, trying to elevate their, fucking, self-worth or some shit.

well music has evolved a great bit, i was never a music fan but i can understand why people prefer the newer music, its the music of their generation, its about themes and problems they can relate to, take opera for an example (you never mentioned how long back your taste takes you) few people can relate to not marrying the girl of your dreams because her dad is a merchant and you are a farmer, but if you simplify enough you can still relate to it today, but if the "old" music you like is only from the 60-80s then you are in the majority.

either way there are some great forums for all genres and times, so if you are really interested in finding more music from that era i would suggest seeking some of them out.

What? You mean lady gaga, and ke dollar sign ha aren't podcasted that they auto tune?

Don't like rap (Think it's absolute trash) , or alot of recent things, not to say there isn't amazing music if you look hard enough.

I'll agree that way too many people flaunt liking rock legends to elevate themselves.

OT: Old isn't bad. I like Rock/alternative, and techno, in that order.

Er... does orchestral count?

Rap and country are the only ones I can't stand. And whatever daughtry, nickleback, and white snake are.

As soon as I saw "old music" I was excited. But you let me down. I was hoping for a discussion on music from the romantic era.

Well there's that and all the big band stuff too from the 40's, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, The Andrews Sisters

Most probably not, but the music I'm talking about if the mainstream "Pop" stuff, sure I don't listen to like Metal and stuff much, but I would often prefer that compared to the offerings of some other "artists"

Haha crap fail :S left out the thing

Most people I know think modern music is bad but older music is good.

My general opinion is this, mainstream music from previous generations were good but after the invention of the internet people branched out to many other genres of music not recognized in the mainstream, by all definitions of good music these genres cover, they have melody and complexity but most people see this generation by what they hear on the radio, very simple, very repetitious, but not always bad, I mean very few actual music critics would attack artist like Radiohead, Jay-Z and a couple other mainstream artists. Other people refuse to recognize this though. The top 20 is dictated by MTV, Disney and other organizations and with very few exceptions good music is replaced with whats marketable. This doesn't mean good music is dead, like my point earlier I would say the majority would be about 30% of the actual market, the 30% though is the largest percentile, we have the "Old music is better" like you that makes a good portion and a large group that would be labeled other. This other group was created by the internet, an Idea that good music is stuff that is out there stuff that is original, they are the Jazz, Rock, Metal and Punk of this generation, with genres that are new and sound different then anything that has ever been done before. My never ending love for Post Rock for example, not very many people have heard of it, but bands like Godspeed you! Black Emperor and Sigur Ros are now being recognized by mainstream publications, simply because there is a big enough minority that listens to it. Yet people wont look pass this generations big flops like Justin Bieber or Hannah Montana, and its a shame really.

Also to the second part,Brian Eno, Radiohead, Sonic Youth, Sigur Ros, Vampire Weekend, Forseti, OOIOO, Sleater Kinney, The Strokes, Interpol and Joy Division.

Proof that modern music doesn't equal=pop and shit.
You sir, are a legend :)
Love Gorrilaz and that song especially.

OT-Define 'Bad' Everyone likes different things. 'Bad' and 'Good' are subjective things, old music is usually higher regarded than new music objectively purely because it was new (the evolution of all the genre's). Very hard to create a new Genre now.

What people do you know? Most people I know(and I at one point could be lumped with them)thought old music = good, new muisc = crap. Then I grew up. New popular music is mainly bad because now everything has became a corporation/everyone has a wooden leg and an eye patch, arghh. Some people say the same about games or movies. It's just now everyone wants to make money for the most part. So you'll get a million and one "like God of War, but" titles and very few "notafpsbutgreatgame" game. Try to search some Indie crap although that can be a bit over saturated when you really get into it

Eek. Credence is considered old?

I am one of those strange extraterrestrials who thinks (western) music reached its peak in the person of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750).

Even Public Enemy?

There is always at least one gem in every genre. In some, however, you just have to look harder to find it.

You want old? I love, love Chopin =]

I never got the impression that old=bad in any way. Music does not deteriorate with time, though appreciation for it in popular culture may fluctuate.

I kinda like some classic Queen and Aerosmith, and a few others, but nothing too much. I appreciate all music, though I may not like it all.

He is so overrated.
You might have to be slightly autistic to be fully turned on by his music. Maybe.

To me it's like catnip.

Ever so slightly, yes. There are better composers, but I suppose its all down to personal taste, at the end of the day.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who calls her that. ;P

OT: It's not modern music that people hate, it's popular music. The two aren't synonymous.
