I'm doing Revolution by John Lennon, but the line
"But if you go carryin' pictures of Chairman Mao/ You ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow"
is stumping me somewhat.
Can anyone give me a hand on this one and lead me to its meaning? It would be greatly appreciated.

That's what I was thinking, that it was some old American anti-red 'propaganda'. Other than that, I have no other ideas.
