Stereotypes are, well, stereotypes... /shrugs
I'm not quite sure what the stereotype would be for a person who listens to techno, or if I wanted to be politically correct, electronic dance music. A pill munching kandi raver or something?
I don't usually get judged too harshly for my musical tastes. If anything people either enjoy it or ignore it really.

My neighbours: Popped collar douchebags that wear sunglasses at night and use more cologne then they did in medieval France! Type of music? th-BOOM-e ki-BOOM-nd th-BOOM-at ma-BOOM-kes the -BOOM- buil-BOOM-ding shake. And anything from the top40 (which is shyte imo).
They also tend to be very aggressive and obnoxious when they are drunk. (random screaming and banging on the walls)
Its not applicable to everyone, but the majority of people do fit in a certain stereotype according to the music they listen.
I don't because you have never heard of the music I listen to.

My neighbours: Popped collar douchebags that wear sunglasses at night and use more cologne then they did in medieval France! Type of music? th-BOOM-e ki-BOOM-nd th-BOOM-at ma-BOOM-kes the -BOOM- buil-BOOM-ding shake. And anything from the top40 (which is shyte imo).

Well, someone on this forum said they'd lost any respect that they might have had for me because I'd mentioned I liked 80's rock. LOL!
I listen to all kinds of music - classical, pop, rock, j-rock, folk music, metal, country, etc - but that's the only time that I can recall that someone has tried to put me down for the music I listen to. Well, my family has looked at me funny occasionally in regards to the Japanese music, but I now have a niece who listens to it more, ha!
I tend not to focus on the genre that much and more the songs themselves. I'm definitely not a fan of most techno/trance/similar music for example, but I've heard a few I liked. Which is why I won't diss someone listening to pop music but when I see a teen girl I know raving about a new Justin Bieber song I shudder with horror.
I feel for you OP, and I can't believe that guy's nerve. You have every right to listen to whatever music you like in public as long as you're wearing head phones (which you were). The other day on the bus a guy was playing loud Spanish music on his phone to his kid without headphones; if someone had objected to that they'd be in the right(IMO), but no one did. (Swedes, you know. We're not big on confrontation.)

I don't know what kind of music people "think" I listen to when I meet them. I'm quite a big guy with a large collection of tattoos and get some really funny looks when people find out I still listen to a lot of 80's and sometimes a bit of 60's (my parents were huge 60's music fans so I got dragged up on it and it kinda stuck).
I think (partially) because I listen to metal, people think I use drugs. I have never used an illegal drug in my life.
Having been at one point the only goth in a high school of 1000 kids, I know how easily people judge. All it is, is ignorance based fear. Don't understand it? Hate it. You know, cause that's the obvious solution to the worlds problems.
I've never gotten judged based off what music I listen too besides people looking at me funny when its something off the beaten path, I'll give anything a shot and can usually find something I like. Music is one of the stupidest things to try and stereo type someone from since its such an individual experience as opposed to say growing up in the country were theres going to be some level of commonality to blow out of proportion into a stereo type.

I've never been judged on what genre i listen to, mostly because i had no idea what i liked until recently.
But i do get stereotyped for being a Russian. Think of any Russian stereotype, tough, emotionless, armed, drinking vodka all the time, and that's what they think of me. Which actually is quite nice since it scares off people i don't like.

I listen to Nine Inch Nails, and people automatically assume that it's pretty much the same as Marilyn Manson. Sure, the lead singer of Nine Inch Nails published Manson's first album, but still, big difference.
I listen to Rock, Stoner Rock, Hard Rock and 1930-1960s classics. I like my music to be a little groovy and rhytmic.
