As none of you know, I have a love for musicals but unfortunately, even if I do love songs from musicals, I can't expect others to feel the same. For this discussion, if you like musicals name your favorite. If you don't, feel free to explain why if you can be civil or reasonable about it.

For those confused, I'll just give the basic requirement for something to be a musical: There has to be at least five songs sung by the characters themselves. So knowing a lot of people like this movie, The Blues Brothers is a musical.

For quite some time, my favorite musical was Avenue Q, the adult version of Sesame Street. However in recent months, a new musical has actually made it to my number one slot, Repo: The Genetic Opera. I have three reasons why this my favorite. One, metal band instrumentals. Two, sci-fi horror. And three, Paris Hilton's face falling off.

Here is the theatrical trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzgpU25C6fg
For the record, it's directed by the same guy that directed Saw 1 - 4.

I first have to preface this with I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT THE MOVIE, but Sweeney Todd. Way back before the film was even pitched, I both saw it live, and got to play
Lucy
when my high school put it on. So much fun. I swear, though. Sondheim is SADISTIC towards anyone attempting to sing his songs. City on Fire from Sweeney Todd is a prime example of his cruelty. D:

I love Repo, too! The music in it is amazing. Plus... GILES IS IN IT. YES.
Oh! I also really like Rent, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and Les Miserables(which I got to see on Broadway!). I'm probably forgetting something else...

GUH. OF COURSE. THE BUFFY MUSICAL EPISODE. Best. Thing. Ever. If you haven't seen it, a demon comes to Sunnydale and his power makes everyone in the town keep spontaneously breaking out into song and dance. The people are fully aware of what they're doing, but are unable to stop themselves. xD

Sweeney Todd is definitely a good one and Hedwig I've seen recently. I love the symbolism in it and it really opens for a lot of interpretation. Rent I actually saw in 9th grade with my mother, and it was amusing to hear her opinion on it. I personally liked it but she says "The music is amazing, but WHY IS IT SO DEPRESSING?!"

But I am going to force my mother to watch Repo next chance I see her and I've already planned a night of my girlfriend and I watching Hedwig since she hasn't seen it. And yes, Buffy the Musical Episode was amazing.

I've been to one musical in the past, We Will Rock You, It was pretty good. I don't think I've ever seen another musical, unless you count the movie adaption of Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Yes, the show We Will Rock You and Rocky Horror Picture Show are both musicals. Both of which I really like, too. I saw We Will Rock You when I was 15, and I saw Rocky Horror a couple times since I was 12. I almost performed in We Will Rock You in a school play, but having the professional actor goal I do, I couldn't stand being part of a production where no one took it seriously, not even the adults. I was cast as a chorus part due to the fact I was new to the school and that's how school auditions work, so dropping out was that big of a deal

I think Repo: The Genetic Opera is the best musical ever made, but not for the reasons the OP suggested. I liked it because the music is seamless and there's never that jarring break between dialogue and music - it's all one thing, and it works. Haven't seen another film do that, ever.

Queen the Musical (written by Ben Elton and the remaining members of Queen) is a good one.

Loved Blues Brothers (the original NOT Blues Brothers 2000 .... although guiltily I did enjoy it).

Westside Story, South Pacific, Les Miserables ... all things along those lines for one reason alone. My mum is a massive musicals fan. We had them all growing up. Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and all that .. er .. jazz.

So I grew up with musical loving parents and a sister. Now my wife and eldest daughter love musicals.

Some I tolerate others I genuinely enjoy sad as it may seem coming from a bloke like me.

My reasons for Repo are more in a joking manner. What I really like about the movie is a change in "love interests." Many a times have I seen the typical love interest, and that's all fine and dandy but a relation between a daughter and her father actually struck me in a way. I know it's not a new thing or maybe not even a unique one at that, but the way the movie portrays their relationship, it's just so touching to me. Only one movie has ever made me cry, and that was for personal reasons. Repo is one of the very few movies that brings me to borderline tear jerking.

And if you must know, the movie that made me cry was Star Wars Episode 1 since at the time of seeing it, my father was not living with my family and was out of the country due to his job, in Pakistan to be exact. Qui-Gon Jinn happened to look similar to my father so when he died, obviously I would burst into tears for the fact my father was in actual danger at the given time.
