Hey all, I just picked up a Samsung Galaxy S3 (my first smart phone) and I'm wondering if my lovely fellow Escapist memebers could recommend some apps to me, preferably free ones. Thanks all.

If you're techie/comfortable modifying your rom:
PDroid (Privacy protections)
Wifi Tether[footnote]Technically only needs root, but most stock roms, as far as I know, don't come with the kernel enabled for it. I could be wrong[/footnote]

If you're not modding your rom but just rooting:
AdFree (obvious)
No-Frills CPU Control (Controls your CPU over/underclock. A battery saver)

Even if you're not rooting:
ES File Explorer (Multifunction file manager/transfer)
Ringdroid (Clip MP3s into ringtones)
K-9 Mail (Far superior to the stock mail app)
SMS Popup (allows you to customize SMS Notifications on a per-contact basis)
Opera Mobile (Not Opera Mini)
FBReader (epub ebook reader)

If you own a car, Torque is very handy. It's an OBDII scanner that connects to your car through a bluetooth adapter and tells you all sorts of interesting stuff like engine fault codes, air flow rate, RPM, speed, exhaust temp and O2 concentration, etc. At $5, it's much cheaper and more functional than a dedicated scanner.
