Just wanted to compile a list of all of the mw2 story plot holes!

-How does the British s.a.s not know that captain price was in the gulag? Did they lose track of him or something?
Well, everyone thought he was dead at the end of COD4, so thats when the Russians grabbed him, sort of like the man to blame for the death of the Russians in COD4

-Why does the rest of the world just stand by and let an intercontinental war go on
If the most powerful countries in the world went to war, most people would want to stay out of it... and the Russians did it completely secretly.

-Why does the British s.a.s just ignore the fact that Sheppard killed two of their units? Do they not keep track of them?
Technically it's task force 141, or something, and they are totally covert, and not even meant to exist and also took control of the unit and had the backing of the US government behind him.

-Where is the president in all of the game? Why does he just authorize a war with his country
...What does that mean and have to do with anything?

-Why do the Russians seem to suddenly all die when d.c. is Emp'd, do they all have pacemakers :p?
They don't die... clearly! You take them on later in the level and they give you hell for the rest of the time in D.C. The Russians who were shooting at you got killed by falling Helicopters and were stunned at what was happening

-How does the Russian airfare fly over all of America with what seems like no resistance.
Boats are the answer, get a Boat around everyone and you've just got yourself a portable base. Also they managed to make the radar appear like Solar Flares were being emitted, so everyone thought it was a glitch.

-What is the importance of the VIP you find dead in the urban American neighborhood?
As your commander said once "Need to know basis." Your a soldier, he's your commander, you don't ask questions. (It's more of an unresolved Plot thread anyway, and an excuse to see the Tattoos).

-What are the tattoos of the "special Russian soldiers" you find in that same house?
Makarov's Men all have Tattoos. These Soldiers were Makarovs men.

-How does Makarov literally just walk into a Russian airport? He is a wanted criminal/terrorist and I am pretty sure they have security and cameras in the airport.
Well, I imagine that he walked into the airport, surrounded by his boys, went into the Elevator, got loaded and armed, bing bang boom, everyone's dead

-How does price manage to get into the Russian submarine and pretty much instantly laucnh an emp? Are there no launch codes?
Because he's Captain Price, and just that awesome. (Yes it makes no sense)

-How does said emp destroy a space station thousands of miles above the earth?
It's a Nuke... not an EMP, they don't exist too well... When a Nuclear Missile is detonated above the Atmosphere, an Electro Magnetic Pulse is Created below.

-How the f*** is there fire in space?
It's a Nuclear Missile detonated in the Atmosphere... there will be some Oxygen, albeit not a lot. Also, Nuclear Fission.

The list goes on, post your favorite plot holes below :D
Well... After extensive thought, MW2 finally makes sense! ^^

Calumon: I'm proud of you Jack, you made the game make sense!

This answer essentially sums it all up for me.

But a few points could be levelled down to just meaning IW would of had to think about the SP and less on the MP, CRIMINAL!

In the US, the only person with higher Autority than the Prssident is a General of the Army, I think.

Gameplay.

A better question would be, 'How did Makarov walk into an Airport as a wanted criminal with a shitload of guns and ammunition?'

He's a 1337 Haxzor.

Wow, I'm really glad of the turn out on the thread lol. You guys explained many things that I didn't get/forget after about 3 playthroughs, so here are some more things I don't get:

-How come the Russian's seem to only invade Washington D.C and surrounding areas? They don't explain what's happening in the reset of the world.
-How does Captain Price change his clothes so quickly? One second he is in the gulag getting evacuate by a helicopter, and the next it goes down and he's in military gear.
-How do the Russian's not see you but know Soap is in the hangar?
-Why does detonating a fuel depot blow up random harriers on the other sides of the Tarmac?
-Why is it that Sheppard gives a shit about the 30 000 soldiers he lost, yet puts the rest of them in harm way? He bombs quite a few of them in the last few missions, and he gets america invaded were countless American lives would be lost.
-Where were all the civilians in all the America levels? How did they evactuate so quickly?
-How the hell does the Russian army mobilize so quickly? Did they just have the amount of equivalent and food/water necessary for all it's troops in a heartbeat?
-What happened to Roja's assistant?

I always thought the whole airport mission was stupid. Even if some terrorists did decide to just walk into an airport and gun everyone down, I doubt the leader of the terrorist organization would join them. You wouldn't see Osama Bin Laden go head on into a gun fight.
Also, not really a plot hole, but it annoys me if you accidently shoot one of the terrorists in that mission, they all call you a traitor and you fail the mission. But at the end of the mission, you find out they already knew you were a traitor and they kill you, but you win. If they already knew I was a traitor, what's the difference between them killing me in the airport and killing me outside that van?
And another thing. I'm sure Russia invaded America because they found the body of an American CIA agent at the airport and thought it was America who did it. Do I really need to explain why that's dumb? Or did I misinterpret that?
Indeed.

1.How did Russia know that it was A cia agent if he was diguised as a Russian terrorist?
2.If the bullets came from south america, why didn't the Russians assume they did it (although thats unlikely)?
3.If theey find the corpse of the American in an inclosed place were no police officers who were on sight could claim to have shot him, shouldn't they have come to the conclusion that he was killed for a reason.

sign... let me take a breather. Okay:

4.If they found out he was americain, surely they could have easily gotten information like the fact he was in the cia and ,from there point of view, could easily have been an undercover agent.
5."If" America had launched this terrerist attack why would they send someone from the cia. 6.Why would they launch a terrorist attack at all?
7. Why didn't any Russian politicians seem to step in and OH I don't know, ASK AMERICA WHAT THEY WERE DOING?
8. If Makarov was a highly wanted war criminal, why didnt Russia recognise his patterns or something along the lines of joining the dots?
9.If Makarov staged this attack to raise his weapon sales, who is buying the weapons. Does Russia not have enough weapons to invade america? They seemed to easily air raid itz azz. (sorry).

And finaly.

10. Why is there such an importance on the american guns the terrorists used. The civilians died and the police were kept at a distance. It's not like anyone sw them.

sheese, why didn't he just shoot the four terrorist and save us from this swiss cheese of a plot

it is possible to answer all or at least most of those questions, going one by one. But its alot easier to just say "just go with it," more far-fetch things have happened in "realistic" shooters

This too baffled me... Maybe because it was like almost in the atmosphere at that point, so there might have been an itty bitty amount of oxygen? I don't know haha.

While the plot of this game is like swiss cheese, there are two that stand out to me even more than the others.

1. What did the Russian police think about the bodies of the other two actual terrorists at the airport? Two of the guys you entered with got killed, and they most definitely were not CIA.

2. Why did Shepard shoot Roach and Ghost. They got him the data, but they also didn't look at it. They would have no idea of what he did if he simply omitted some info when telling them what was on it.

The whole Russian reaction seemed to be a "jump-the-gun" reaction. When an attack like that happens, the civilian population would be out for blood, and wouldn't much care if they actually attacked the right people (see: 9/11 and the U.S. invasion of Iraq).
3. I'm sure there would be some cop happy to claim he killed one of the terrorists and become and national hero.
4-7 He was CIA deep cover. In fact, if the Russians did find out he was CIA, even more reason for them to suspect that the Americans were behind the attack. Nothing the Americans could say would have a good chance of convincing the Russians otherwise.
8. I doubt Makarov's M.O. was "pretend to be American and try to cause global war"
9. Makarov is described as a "freelance terrorist for hire"...or something along those lines. I was under the impression someone hired him to do this. Also why you were with him, to find out who wanted the operation. Also, to some of the concerns about him getting in the airport without being seen: he was coming from some sort of "employee only" area with like 100 lbs. of firearms, so I would assume he payed someone off. Also, I doubt they have someone looking intently at the security footage or that there is enough detail in the displays showing that footage to accurately identify anyone unless you're specifically looking for them.
10. NATO guns fire NATO rounds. That means NATO bullets in the civilians and NATO cartridge casings all over the floor.
As for the VIP mission, I was thinking that would either have something to do with the next installment. Either that, or to communicate the fact that soldiers are often working with limited intel, and sometimes don't ever know why they do what they do.

Finally: I thought Price was airlifted out at the end of the first one. Wasn't he the one with the Russian agent riding up in the stretcher with him, administering CPR and then getting pissed and slamming his fists down on his chest? Also, the guy you work with in the first one is named Kamarov...the bad guy in the second one is Makarov. That's not really a plot hole or anything, I just thought it was funny.

Enough of the filling of plot holes, though. My personal favourite plot hole is Makarov's slaughter of the Russian airport. He doesn't wear a mask of any kind.

well, he would look a bit less threatening in a mickey mouse costume. "Remember, no Russian. AH-HA"

I recall that the airport KNEW that Makarov was involved in the attack, but the issue was "Was America INVOLVED or SUPPORTED the attack (because of the dead American).
Of course, there's still like 50 plot holes

Yes - A better question is how he went missing.
-Why does the rest of the world just stand by and let an intercontinental war go on
Better question: Where is the NATIONAL GUARD and the USAF.
-Why does the British s.a.s just ignore the fact that Sheppard killed two of their units? Do they not keep track of them?
It was a rogue cell - They couldnt have known. However, thats due to a lack of realistic procedure.
-Where is the president in all of the game? Why does he just authorize a war with his country
He doesnt, Russia declares war. And hed be in some secret bunker, or Camp David.
-Why do the Russians seem to suddenly all die when d.c. is Emp'd, do they all have pacemakers :p?
I often wonder that myself.
-How does the Russian airfare fly over all of America with what seems like no resistance.
There is no excuse for that.
-What is the importance of the VIP you find dead in the urban American neighborhood?
Hes probably some politician.
-What are the tattoos of the "special Russian soldiers" you find in that same house.
I dont see how thats a plothole...
-How does Makarov literally just walk into a Russian airport? He is a wanted criminal/terrorist and I am pretty sure they have security and cameras in the airport.
Even if they saw him, he was only in the outer layer when the shooting started. Security is IN the Airport, not around it.
-How does price manage to get into the Russian submarine and pretty much instantly laucnh an emp? Are there no launch codes?
No excuse for that either.
-How does said emp destroy a space station thousands of miles above the earth?
Its not possible, since it would dissipate in the atmosphere.
-How the f*** is there fire in space?
Impossible - There is no air, and therefore cannot be combustion based explosions.

The list goes on, post your favorite plot holes below :D
My favorite plot hole is: Why the FUCK does Russia declare war on the US because a Terrorist is found shot dead by his co-conspirators, who happens to be American?
"Look, a dead American who misbehaved in Russia! WAR! Did i say war? I meant, send everyone in on foot - No heavy vehicles. Oh, and dont load the planes. Theyre for show."

-After the airport incident, the Russian founds a US agent, died by point blank gunshot to the head, and they automatically assume the US orchestrated the attack.

-When 141 was in Favela, the HQ refused to send them extraction,so Soap came up with an idea:use a payphone to call his old friend, who happens to have a chopper and hanging around the neighborhood, and he also knew where 141's secret submarine is.

-Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) why didn't the US use it?

-Price survival from COD4,even if the Loyalist left him there, would the Ultranationalist nurses Price back only to put him at place where you put people you can't kill in? consider that the SAS just gunned their leader? The Loyalist would have see him back home, even in a body bag,the Ultranationalist would have see him back home, especially in a body bag.

-Price needs at least a key and a passcode to launch a nuke from a Russian submarine,we don't know Price's education level, but it's save to assume that plotting a course for a nuke to be detonated in a specific location is a lot harder than it sounds, even harder when you're threatening someone to do it.

-Why didn't Soap and Price ask the SAS for help when Shep is on to them? even though they're branded terrorists, but US credibility was "blown to hell" after the airport incident. These guys were SAS right?...instead, they go straight for Shep.

-How did Maka, and Shep plot their little conspiracy together anyway? through Facebook?

-How did the American dig up so many trenched in DC so fast under heavy fire? with SCV and medics?

-Soaphawk.

Well, on the topic of the No Russian mission:

Wasn't the guy that Shepard got to go hang out with Makarov (Alexi whatever) trying to get close to him so he could kill him?

Lemme try my hand here...

1. Dead men need no Medivacs.
2. Who would have the stones? Do you really wanna tangle with Russia or the US?
3. Beats me. Maybe they were too tied up with staying out of the war to send a strike team to God-Knows-where.
4. You don't really get to authorize an enemy invasion of your capital city.
5. They don't; you fight some in the aftermath. Most of them just pull out before then overseas reinforcements can catch them with their trousers down.
6. The alusion there is that General Shepard disabled the majority of American Radar and anti-air.

The rest can be summed up with 'poorly-thought-out plot convenience'.

And, for my part, here's a few holes:

Why in Sin's bad name does Shepard think the best way to interest people in war is to blow up half the goddamn country? Did that old bastard ever hear of a little thing called a 'public service announcement'? I understand his motive, but talk about waaaay overdoing things tactically.

Why does anyone even pretend for a moment that Ghost isn't just post-reconstructive surgery Gaz? Because he totally is. Same battle tactics, same love of brutal torture, same physique, same loose-cannon attitude, same outfit, and the same frikkin' actor. I don't care what the EU comic book says, he's motherflipping Gaz. Why does the writer even try to pretend it isn't?

Why didn't the dev team realize that their game would've been much better if they'd released it as an unconnected clipshow of levels, rather than trying to tie it together with a story that only someone like Adrian Veidt could begin to understand?
