Fellow escapists Why do we play vidoe games for entertainment? a way to kill time? or to escape reality for a bit.
I play games to escape so why are games all trying to be more realistic when all I want to do in a game is get lost in it. And so I ask you escapists do you embrace or fight the realistic game?

I don't see why it has to be one or the other. I love both and which I play is only dependent on the mood I'm in at the time. Pretty much every other form of entertainment medium from books to music to movies had both the serious/deep/arty stuff and the purely for fun stuff and I don't see games as needing to be any different.

There was a study done recently that showed sports games increase mental activity more than shooting games, thought to be because a sporting situation is more likely than a violent situation. Therefore, realistic games can potentially have improved immersion compared to their less-realistic counterparts. But I do see where you're coming from, and really either is good. It just depends on what you want, gritty realism or whacky fun.

If you refer to Call of Duty, Battlefield or Medal of Honor, then I will start by stating the obvious.
Those games are NOT realistic.

If you refer to games like Operation Flashpoint, or even better, ArmA, then I will say that they are not games, but rather Military Simulations, and as such are catered to the type of player who treats the games as such.

Whether or not realism exists in "games" today, there are differences between what people "get lost in".

Personally, I find it much easier to embrace realism, than Unreal Tournament, in my shooters.

I've been waiting for an intergration of both. A game with realistic physics and ... everything else. But eventually, you, the main character gets beyond that. A good example would be Red Dead Redemption. Just make it where a gun shot to the leg makes you a cripple, or at least limp for a bit.

I can't stand realism, thats boring. Give me something with pretty stylized characters and environments brimming with color and magic over generic brown-and-grey military shooters any day.

Realism and fun arent directly related in any way really.

Realism and imagination on the other hand...

Sounds like you need Okami.

I have a great example for you; I don't like Batman:Arkham Asylum, but I keep playing it.

Rockstar Entertainment's Bmgame engine works like an interactive cutscene. I disapprove because I know I couldn't be doing this if I wanted to. Press a button and Batman smoothly rolls, leaps and performs strike after strike. I'm barely controlling who Batman hits. I'm usually not choosing how Batman strikes him. I'm certainly not choosing how to evade when its time to get out of there - oh, wait, what was that? Oooh, I flipped and totally landed between those two guys, and then got out of there again.

If I'm just mashing buttons here, it might as well be someone else playing right? Yet the way it all flows together is titillating, and exhilarating. So its fun, somehow. It doesn't really deserve to be fun. The way the engine cobbles together your combat flow, its so forgiving that a one-armed man could do it. Somehow its fun despite being shamefully unrealistic.

But hiding Batman's useful gadgets until later in the game? Total BS.

I have the PS2 version of that game, still play it a lot. Have not played any of the newer ones.

I like both as true to life as possible sims and totally bonkers arcade games, and anything in between.

What I don't like is when games pretend to be realsitic in it's marketing blurb, without even trying to be, except for some art assets (looking at you, CoD, or anything by Codemasters or Ubisoft sequels to Redstorm games)

UNDERSTAND?[/HEADING]
I didn't say they are...jeezuz did someone piss in your cornflakes this morning?

I said that I generally found realism boring. Thats it, I stated a preference. Wanna calm down?

Well, realistic to that. I mean, if they made a 100% authentic shooter...well, how "realisitc" is it to US? Ive never fired a real gun. Ive never killed a person. Ive never been in an army o fought in a war.

I have the PS2 version of that game, still play it a lot. Have not played any of the newer ones.
In that case then look into anything from Capcom. The only thing that resembles the dogshit brown/gunmetal gray shooters is Resident Evil, and possibly, Lost Plannet.

Capcom have made some fun games, I loved the first and third Devil May Cry. Stupid fun gameplay, superpowered demonic weapons, over the top so-bad-its-funny ham acting from Dante all while fighting the legions of hell. Good times.

Is Bayonetta any good? I heard good things but never got into it.

I severely rccomend getting DMC4 on the PC (its available from Steam). It comes with a special difficulty mode that unleashes anywhere from 3 to 20 times as many enemies than you would fight on normal.

It is as fun and as hard as you would expect.

As for Bayonetta, ive heard its very similar to DMC, but i never chased up that lead. However it does come from the same people who once made Team Clover, so its probably worth looking into.

I fight the games that say their realism is a reason you should buy it.
"Buy our game! Everything looks like dirt and gray/brown!"
or
"Buy our game! All the guns and stuff work like real life!"

Well thats neat I guess, but I really don't care.
I like the cartoony look of games like Battalion Wars and Wind Waker. I like the "hyper realism" of Conker's Bad Fur Day (only for N64 mind you). I enjoy how unrealistic Minecraft looks. Sure I enjoy CoD, but not because its so amazingly realistic zomg. I enjoy it cuz I get to kill people :p
A game is a game, and it'll always be a game. I don't like it when games try to pretend to be more, when they're not.

Realism is boring for me. I like fantasy games, they are often fun for me. Why do I want to play a game that is similar to real life? I play games to escape from the real world, to let my imagination run free.

I played the Xbox version of Devil May Cry 4, it was...alright. I don't think it was as good as the third game. Really though, I'm just pissed off that a next gen devil may cry game came out and I don't get to play as Virgil and I don't get a Sparda costume for Dante.

*Cries* I want Virgil in HD!!! *folds arms and pouts*

Nero was cool and all, mastering jump cancel on top of timing Max-act was getting to be fun. His moveset is still painfully inferior to Dante's or Virgil's.

While it is true that Nero's moveset is quite a bit smaller than Dante's i have to give Capcom credit for making him very different from Dante. Special mention going to his Devil Trigger.
