Last night I noticed that my hard drive was getting mighty low on space, so I decided to compress the whole thing. Upon seeing that it would take 3 days, I realised I couldn't be bothered and cancelled the operation. This morning I turned on my PC, only to find a message saying "BOOTMGR is compressed". I tried to use a recovery disc, but all that does is say "Windows is loading files" and then give me an error message 0xc00000e9, an unexpected I/O error has occurred. I even tried using my dad's laptop to put the data from the recovery disc on a memory stick and then using that, but the same error occurs. Is there anything I can do besides taking it to a repair shop? I'm using Vista 64 bit.

Just do that. Don't try to do it yourself. It might be a bit over your head, I mean no offence.

Since plenty of repairing software is really intrusive, there's strong possibility that your data is corrupted beyond repair.
If there's nothing you really can't live without i'd skip repair shop and do format/Windows installation.
