I just got back from my summer vacation and one of the first things I hear that my dog was put down. While she was very old, at around 14 years old, I just wasn't prepared for that news. I had that dog since I was around 3 years old, so needless to say, I'm pretty devastated. I didn't even get to see her in the months before she died, all I can do is look at the spot she used to lay down on all the time :(

for discussion: Did you ever have a pet you had for a long time die?

Yep. My dog of about 15 years got put down last year. Pet deaths, while they may suck, don't linger with you. Trust me, you get over Family pet deaths very quick. And this is coming from a guy who really loves his animals.

Yeah, we used to have a Labrador cross with something. She died about...five years ago now I think. Stroke in the garden.

Can't remember when we got her, I just always remembered her being there.

It's alright now though, we got a new dog and I can actually do stuff with her : )

We just had to have my cat put down, which I had owned for about nine years. The feeling sucks.

I've lost 2 cats, numerous guinea pigs (sp), 3 rabbits, 2 dogs and fish. After a while the deaths of pets stopped impacting on me and I just accepted that they were going to die at some point.

This year alone I've had a dog die who was about 11 and a cat die who wasn't really that old, but he was the only pet that had been more mine than anyone else's.
I still miss 'em both a little. I miss the cat a little more, seeing as the dog stole your food if you weren't looking. Sometimes he'd just nab it regardless.

I looked at your comment, then looked at your avatar, and got a very bad vibe from those words.

Haven't had a pet die since i was seven, all i remember is being depressed for about a month then suddenly being fine again.

My cat's one of my best friends (its not as weird as it sounds, i have a fair few human friends too) and he's nearly thirteen now and he's lived in my room since he was 3. When he dies it'll probably take me a while to get over it.

I didn't mean it like that, I swear!

I meant, like taking her out for walks, and, erm, stuff like that.

I'm sorry to hear that.

I've lost dog to the raveges of time which sucked pretty badly.
Though I think it helped that we help train guiding eye dogs, which meant that I 'lost' 10 dogs before our own dog actually died. It helped soften the blow.

Man I hate it when I get ninja'd by my own brother. Yeah that day sucked a lot. He was this big black cat who we used to see carrying huge rabbits in his mouth and tearing the heads off the babies, that cat was a bastard... but he was our bastard. one morning he woke up and I let him out of my room cause he was meowing and I noticed that he was limping. his foot was cold so we think he had a clot in the leg. we later found he also had a clot in his lungs and heart so really he was, by the time we had him put to sleep, drowning in his own lung fluid.

Yeah. Like, 5 of em. One I accidentally killed myself indirectly. I think I stopped caring around the 3rd one.

My dog died at age fourteen. I had her since I was three. Basically my entire childhood had this creature involved in some way, and then, the day of her fourteenth birthday I find her dead as I go to pat her before school.

The feeling was truly terrible. I have a new dog now, and though she looks identical they have reverse personalities. This one is energetic, devious and incredibly playful. Getting back onto topic, having a pet such as your die, when it has been such a fixture to your life is a terrible feeling, and you have my condolances.

Sorry to hear that man.

I haven't had any pets die that I've had for a long time (a bunch of fish drowned or committed suicide, but I hadn't had them for long enough), but I was pretty wrecked when my Grandparent's German Shepard was put to sleep. A lot of fond memories of that dog. It seemed so huge and was so friendly. But as he got older, he got sicker. His hind legs stopped working. We'd be arriving at the gate and we'd see him dragging himself to the gate to greet us. When he got put down, it was the humane thing to do, but try explaining that to an 7 year old. I still think of that dog.

They're new dog is starting to get long in the tooth as well. It'll be a sad day when he eventually goes.

Sorry for your loss, I lost the cat I grew up with when I was 15. Loved her quite dearly, shame that at that age I was already unable to cry about it.
